Locks up durring play

DONT BUY THIS PLAYER IT ISNT WORTH $50 LET ALONE $500
The stop playing movie issue described by other here first started by watching 2 movies in a row the second movie would stop midway. Then while watching any movie the player would stop and return to the Yamaha spash screen. After tring to continue watching by going to the menu then the screen the system will play for 1 min. tops then again return to the splash screen.
I took the system with its extended warrenty back to Ultamate for repair, and after 3 weeks was told they couldent reduplicate the issue. So I brought it back home hooked it up and the first move watched got really exciting and poop its back to the splash screen. Returned it to the service center at Ultamate, only to be told again after 3 weeks they cant duplicate. So not only is Yamaha building piecies of CR..P I can tell that Ultamate has hired the best technicians $3.25 and hour can buy.

Early DTS problems

I purchased this unit in December 1999 along with the Yamaha RX-V595a from ABT in Morton Grove, Il. They are all connected to Bose AM-5's for the main speakers, Bose AM-3's for the surround, M&K VK-7 Powered Sub-woofer and a Sony KV-53V80 Rear projection TV. The unit has performed flawlessly for the past four months. Color reproduction is outstanding (the component outputs really make a difference) and the stereo seperation is breathtaking. It was outstanding until I purchased the DTS version of "Saving Private Ryan" this past week when I experienced the same problems mentioned earlier, audio cutting in and out. You couldn't watch the movie, it was pretty bad. Since I wasn't aware of the reported problem, I brought the DVD to a Best Buy so that I could play it on a unit there to confirm that it wasn't the DVD. Needless to say, it wasn't. I wasn't sure then if it was the DVD player or the receiver. I called the person who sold me the unit and he promptly told me it was the DVD player and to bring it in and they would swap it out with a new one. He said that there was a problem with some units manufactured prior to September of 1999. Took the new one home and it works just fine. They are great over at ABT. I've dealt with them for over six years and I won't go anywhere else. Before this problem I had rented and subsequently purchased "The Matrix" and never had any problems. I have been told by several others, even those outside of where I purchased it that the Yamaha has the best picture. I have no reason to argue that. I love it. If you close your eyes during the invasion seen of "Private Ryan" you would swear that the bullets are flying around you.

The price has come down quite a bit, so i guess it's a better value than when it was in the $700 range. I would give the Overall rating a 4 to account for the DTS problem, but the customer service I received made it a less painful experience.

I have had this DVD player for 4 months. Only a few DTS movies played properly. Ones that did not play properly include "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Matrix". I tried "The Ultimate DVD Platinum" set-up and diagnostic disk and all the player would do is flash the front panel lights off and then on again until I removed it. For the price of the C900, I am very disappointed. Being a long time Yamaha customer, I think they have lost me as a customer. By the way, my unit has a gold sticker next to the serial number. Will probabley look for something less expensive that play DTS properly.

Strength:

Gorgeous Picture quality/sound quality, quiet operation: WHEN WORKING !!!!!

Weakness:

Won't play anymore! Total failure!

Bought this unit (via internet) last fall ... brand new unit ... not even available in my local shops. Matched it to my brand new Yamaha RXV2095, Toshiba TW56x81, Mirage OM-2/Frx. A nice tidy little HT set-up. Turned it on ... wow! Dazzling! God Bless America and the digital age! Didn't even need to compare to other units ... I was in Digital Heaven. I'm never going to another movie theatre in my life ...

But ... 6 months into use, the DVD player just flat out stopped play after about an hour-into a movie. Get NO DISC! warning. Could restart, but a little annoying when the bullets are flying or the love story is heating-up. And ... the trouble began to get progressively worse ... After more time, I could not restart disc's at all. When play stops it refuses to "see" any other disc's in the tray. Doesnt matter what kind of DISC ... DTS or not. I have to shut-down, allow the unit to "cool-off" or the processor to re-set ... I don't know, I have no EE degree. The DVD will restart and play when cold ... beautiful again at start-up, DIGITAL WONDERLAND, then BAM ... shut down.

Surfed my way to Yamaha, found a local FACTORY AUTHORIZED SERVICE TECH, and gave them my story. Three weeks later, the TECH returns my unit, tells me there is nothing wrong with it, but that he realigned, tweaked, etc. Brought it home, reconnected ... DIGITAL WONDERLAND, then BAM ... shut down again ... only NOW it's even worse ... all I can get is 10 minutes of play at best ... and unable to restart.

There were no reviews (of this unit) on this board when I bought the C900, and I took it in for service before I checked this board. Out of frustration, I checked the board this weekend. OH ! MY ! GOD ! My expensive little DVD player is a piece of S xx T ! I guess everyone is experiencing the same failures. How can a Factory Authorized Service Tech. be completely unaware of the problems with this unit when it appears to be commonplace?

NOW ... we all make mistakes. I'm a generous/forgiving person ... lets all work together for a fix. But what has now got me really STEAMED is the fact that I (long ago) E-mailed Yamaha with the symptoms of my problem, and even copied-them on a transmittal letter (prepared for the Fact. Auth. Tech.) describing the problem with my unit. ... Silence ... no response from Yamaha. Are you telling me that they are unaware of their little defect UNLIKELY!

I had just dropped $ 3,500.00 MSRP on YAMAHA products, and I'm getting the cold shoulder from YAMAHA. The jury is still out, but Ivé got a bad feeling about this ... Tonite, I wanted to send another Email to YAMAHA ... ask them for the PO Box to send my adorable little electronic ANCHOR .. for repair, now maybe this is a coincidence ... b u t ... the YAMAHA internet site is GONE! server not responding, etc. Somebody please let OLIVER STONE know about this ... W I E R D !

By the way, my unit bears a July 1999 birth date ... and there are NO cute little stickers of any color pasted on the chassis.

I will pursue YAMAHA with my dying breath (and my Attorneys letter head). If a solution is found, I promise to report it on this board ... but for now ... STAY AWAY FROM ALL YAMAHA PRODUCTS.

Is my RXV2095 going to disintegrate next? I have my doubts!
PITY! when these electronics are working, they are great, but if this is some corporate strategy of planned obselescense ... then the "suits" better re-think their business plan.

Strength:

Outstanding video and 5.1 sound

Weakness:

Failure after 3-6 mos.

Gotta agree with fountainhead... Unfortunately.

I've been through two units now, and am seriously considering trading in for another brand. I have heard absolutely nothing from Yamaha after repeated emails.

It makes me sick because this is the best DVD I've seen, when working. I love my Yamaha 2095 receiver, but I am questioning their ability to provide customer service.

'tis a shame!

Japaness low end units are garbages and worth nothing. They used to bulid quility but all they wanted now is taking you for a ride. This unit is poor build and the worst customer services one can get. If I could get them a zero star I would.
