Strength:

SACD Playback

Weakness:

None for the price paid!

I purchased this player mainly for music and to replace a Philips 763A SACD player that I have. I read the gentleman's review where he said he replaced his Onkyo with a Yamaha and obviously he did not have the menu set up correctly and/or it could be the quality of components in his system. I found the Onkyo to be very satisfing especially in the SACD mode and also the movies were very clear and sharp. I do not have a mid-fi off the shelf system. I have all higher end equipment in my system; Exposure 2010 Integrated Amp, Exposure 2010 Power Amp, Paragon Jem/Jubiliee speakers and PS Audio Statement interconnects and speaker cables. The Onkyo without a doubt for the price paid is quite a "Budget Bargain" and I am very pleased.

Strength:

Great sound quality and very good video quality. Much better than competing Pioneer and Onkyo products.

Weakness:

Slightly difficult to get used to the controls. Get a Harmony 688 Universal Remote and make sure to add an eject button to the remote menus as the included remote has no eject button but the player will respond to the eject IR code supplied by Harmony.

This unit replaced the ONKYO DV-SP502S I bought and absolutely hated. The Onkyo is the same internally as the Pioneer that it competes with. The Yamaha on the other hand is an absolute joy. It has a few small quirks like taking a long time to load discs but it has very respectable video performance and SACD's and DVD Audio discs sound superb. Very clean and clear and warm like vinyl. I really hope SACD continues as a viable format. It's sound is amazing and through this player it is a wonder to behold. The CD Upsampling feature is not really very good but standard CD's sound good without the upsampling engaged so this isn't really a problem. I use this player as a digital source for music and movies both and am very happy with it so far. Make sure to take the time to set this player up properly and you will be rewarded with a wonderful experience.
