This is one amazing DVD player! Combined with my Panasonic 32" HDTV, the progressive scan images are truly amazing. In addition, all of my DVD-Audio disks work GREAT! Very impressive sound, easy menus, error-free performance in all modes. Go Toshiba!

Strength:

Picture from the progersive output is wonderfull.

Weakness:

Freezes in DVD audio discs.

Buyer Beware! This DVD has serious problems with DVD audio discs. Freezing menus on Foreigner 4, and Billy Cobhams “Spectrum” DVD, skipping tracks on the Doobie Brothers “The Captain And Me”, Track 7 on Metallicas Black DVD. Although the picture from this player is stunning for a player at this price, if you want to listen to DVD audio good luck! I even

Strength:

Picture quality and price.

Weakness:

Clumsy way to switch between DVD video and DVD audio- doesn''t auto switch between modes.

Wow! For the price, you can''t beat this progressive-scan player. I''m using it with a 36" Sony Wega and the picture is simply phenomenal. Anamorphic widescreen- especially on the Wega- looks stunning. Colors are brilliant; movies have never looked better. I''ve tried out the DVD-Audio- a little clumsy to use in that you have to manually set the audio ouput to 5.1, and make sure that your priority is set to DVD-Audio to use it, but the sound is incredible! A macro on your programmable remote will of course make the process easier.

Strength:

Outstanding Picture and sound. Progressive Scan Rules.

Weakness:

Counter-intuitive progressive scan/interlace scan switch may confuse some people. This includes, but is not limited to, certain people who have given this player one star claiming it only outputs audio. For DVD Audio multi channel playback one has to go into the menu and switch from bitstream output to 6-channel output, which is somewhat of a hassle

I have a 34" Widescreen Toshiba, and this DVD player makes it well worth the money i paid for it. Picture quality and sound quality are great. DVD-Audio is alright, although i''ve heard better. In response to Jason Steil''s one star review, i would just like to comment. First of all, why were you trying to use S-Video and Composite Video for progressive scan?? This DVD player outputs progressive through component video, like every other one on the face of the earth. Second.. the player has a switch on the back that can be toggled between "I" and "P" When "P" is enabled, it only outputs through component. Therefore, since out of the box it comes with the switch in the P position, you probably plugged it in, thought it didnt work, and returned it. If you hit the switch back to "I" and it still didnt work the reason is that for some reason Toshiba engineered it so that the unit must be unplugged and plugged back in. Just thought i would share this. Toshiba is one of the best manufacturers in terms of reliability, and if someone cannot figure out how to operate there products, it is an ergonomics issue and not a product reliability issue. Other than that, a great DVD player by toshiba. For those with a receiver that doesnt have 6 channel inputs, or those without a desire for DVD-Audio may consider the SD-3750 which is essentially that same player minus DVD-A. Strength:

Good picture. Good price for all the features.

Weakness:

Poor error correction. Very rough layer changes. Average audio. Questionable build quality (pretty light for such a big box!)

I have owned two previous Toshiba DVD players so figured the 4700 would be a good choice again for my Toshiba TNx81 model TV. I kept it for two weeks and returned it. I think the build quality in Toshiba has taken a nosedive. My previous unit, a 3109 sounded just a good, if not better. In fact, I am now temporarily using Playstation 2 and it almost sounds as good. Go figure! As far as the picture, no complaints. The error correction is awful however, noticably worse than my 3109 and almost as bad as the Playstation. Layer changes were so noticable on some of my own DVD''s that my wife commented "is something wrong?" Not good. I also noticed a few audio drops on a couple of DVDs. Finally, I really hate the onscreen menu Toshiba is now using. It was a lot less complicated and easier to navigate with the older models. Also, whatever happened to the "time remaining" display. This was an excellent feature that they seem to have dropped for some of the newer glitzy and useless things.

Wow I can not believe the picture. I puchased the 4700 along with Tosibas 50hx81 widescreen and I can not believe the progresive scan picture, it looks like another room in the house. My brother says jokingly that the only way to get more realistic picture is to have the actors perform at my house

Fist off I would like to say I work at a TV and Electronics store and have setup several dvd players Both at work and in customers houses. The brands I frequently work with are JVC, Philips, Pioneer, Panasonic, and Sony. Although most of these companies sell very good products I was not satisfied with the user interface or the value for the money. This DVD player (SD-4700) is Solid & Versatile performer for mutliple formats... Not only do you get a Rock-Solid Dvd player, Toshiba throws in several other useful features. I do believe that it is important to give an accurate review on what this machine was designed to do. The SD-4700 does a outstanding job playing movies. The Progressive scan picture quality is very clean and precise. This dvd player offers all available audio outputs and sounds very good using Optical or Coaxial digital outputs. The Menu features for this dvd player are much more advanced than any DVD player in this price range. Now for the "Bells and Whistles". This DVD player does include other features such as CD, CD-r, CD-rw, MP3, and DVD-Audio play back. In my experience with the SD-4700 it does all of these other options well. It is important to keep in mind that frills such as MP3 play back are as limited as any other DVD player in this price range. In conclusion, If you are in the market for a top notch Progressive Scan DVD player this is your Ticket. It has rock solid Video performance & is chock full of other useful features. I think its important to focus on what this player''s designed to do..... If you are someone that is looking for for a MP3 player there really isn''t a machine on the market that does this as well as we all would like. I am giving the SD-4700 a perfect score because it does what it was designed to do !! Which is to Play DVD movies!

None really, but if I had to pick the remote, very hard to find a great remote, even after market.

So far this is a great dvd player, movies and music. The tray drive is very quiet, some reviews said was noisy. Setup was very easy.

Strength:

Includes features usually reserved for more expensive players, good build quality.

Weakness:

No DTS Decoding builtin

Quick and easy setup. Progressive & DVD- Audio ouput. Built in Dolby Dig. Decoder. I keep hearing these stupid complaints about MP3 playing abilities..very few DVD players do this well and none as well as a computer will. If you want to use your system with MP3''s just hook up your friggin computer to it or shut up about it. MP3''s or DVD-Audio? I''ll take DVD-A for $250 Alex. Answer : The SD-4700 Question: What is a bargain? Correct!!

A great companion for an HDTV. This progressive scan DVD Player provides an excellent picture. I have experienced no distortion or signal problems. The audio (both CD and DVD) is excellent. My set up is with composite video and dolby digital optical audio connections.
