Strength:

Video, sound.

Weakness:

remote sucks

I bought this DVD player for my parents. It should be easy enough for them to use. I read here that the SD1600 plays CD-Rs, but mine seems to have problems with it. Maybe I'll try a different brand of CD.

Strength:

price, quality

This is my first DVD player. After buying the 1600 for $200, I don't know why I waited so long! My comparison capacity is obviously limited, but I'm very pleased with this product. Also, I've been able to play CD-R's on it, without problem, so perhaps the 1600 IS a bit different from the 1200 in this capacity?

Strength:

Quiet operation, Low price, 3 x Zoom, Clear Fast Forward, Easy to use remote

Weakness:

Buttons small on remote, No optical digital output

Great player for the price. Plus the two year warranty is a bonus. I know a few friends with other more expensive players that have problems overheating and noisy operation. Great product at this price! Very high quality. Picture is great with component outputs. Someone looking for a quality, low priced DVD player without all the useless gimmicks can't go wrong here.

Strength:

Enhanced black level is a plus. 3 Zoom feature cool.Inexpensive

Weakness:

Remote is not great. Buttons too close.

Great DVD player for the $$$$. Probably ideal for someone that just has a stereo hooked up instead of all the Dolby Digital stuff, for the 3d sound feature.Yes!!!! It does play CD-R's!!!!!!!!!! Just use 650MB discs intstead of those 700MB ones. Most Cd players won't play the 700MB dics either. 650 all the way baby !!!

Strength:

Good connectivity, picture quality, sound, laser tracks like a bloodhound, price.

Weakness:

None that worry me.

If you're looking for a good quality DVD player for not too much wonga, look no further. This is the one. Mine plays like a champ, running all the rental disks I can throw at it, including a deliberately seriously damaged one I prepared earlier with a good toothpaste scrub that gave my previous DVD player (the Sammy 611) fits. I have seen no picture jitters, artifacts or pixelation of any kind with any disk I have shoved in it. Picture quality is probably as good as any non-progressive scan DVD player out there at the moment (using a JVC 32" D series TV via component input by the way). I watched Toy Story 2 the other night; it can't have looked any better in the cinema, it was that clear and bright. Sound is pretty good too, though I'm not sure that the simulated surround sound effect is worth turning on; it doesn't seem to do anything much to the sound (N.B. I haven't got a surround system yet; running the sound through a good quality hifi amp and speakers, and it sounds just fine). The setup menu system is simple and easy to use, and there is an enhanced black level option which really helps the picture's contrast. The supplied remote seems OK to me, though I am using a programmable remote for all my components so I'm not really worried about the Toshiba one in any case, and the fact that there is no optical audio output doesn't keep me awake at night either, as the coaxial output will do the necessary as well, if not better, than the optical. (That said, this DVD may not be the best choice for those whose amp's only available digital input is optical. So check your amp before shelling out.) Build quality is lightweight but solid, and it looks alright in a black box sort of way as well. You can turn the display off if you want to so that the numbers don't distract you from the movie, though there's no option to dim it. The zoom option is quite nice; not really useful for watching movies but it's fun to play with for a few moments. (My father-in-law has a 1600 as well; he uses the zoom to make the widescreen picture fill his screen like regular pan-and-scan when a 4:3 fullscreen version isn't available; might be of interest to you too for that reason). I have not spotted any player difficulties with layer changes or any of that sort of thing; it just plays them all fine.

Overall, it works great and it's dirt cheap, making it a winner in my book. I wholeheartedly recommend this player to potential DVD purchasers on a budget.

Strength:

Clear picture, excellent sound and is easy to set up.

Weakness:

buttons on remote. (I keep picking it up backwards), No cdr's and no digital optical output. ??

This DVD is easy to intall for anyone. Just plug it in and connect the 3 wires to the back of your TV, or whatever and it's ready.

I have no receiver so it's lacking the sound quality I was hoping for. But even with 2 speakers in my TV it still sounds better than the VCR.
Played the Matrix with no problems. A great DVD player for the money.

GREAT PRICE to PERFORMANCE!!!!
COLOR Stream componet outputs ROCK!
I never have to go to the movie theather again!!!!

Weakness:

Remote, but my TV remote handles all the controls nicely
CD-R's

WOW, This DVD Player Rocks. I was Walking through Target and Noticed they had a clearence sale on the 1200 model and only had the 1600 in the display, the nice lady checked the price on it and it came up as 139$ so I nabbed it quick. It really works well with my new toshiba 32" cinema series TV using the "color stream" inputs and makes sweet 5.1 sound through my Kenwood DolbyDigtal/DTS Reciever. Mine doesn't seem to like CD-R's too well though a few did work......

Strength:

***DOES PLAY CERTAIN CD-R's*** (See review below)

Weakness:

none yet

I found my Toshiba SD 1600 does play certain CD-R's but not others. The CD-R brand that works consistently in my DVD is made by Memorex, model 3202-3425. If anyone out there gives these CD-R's a try, put another message on this board to confirm that they work.

This is my first DVD I have ever owned and I love it. The picture is crystal clear using the component video outputs plugged into the back of my 32' Toshiba TV. It is amazing how much more clear the picture is compared to a VCR. The sound is great as well.

Strength:

Zoom, frame by frame, differant angles, simulated surround sound, and many more. Also, i like the remote, many people said it was a weakness, but i think that it is great and easy to learn.

Weakness:

No S Video cable included.

I was at Target a few days ago looking at the DVD players. I noticed the Toshiba SD 1200 on clearance. And saw the SD 1600 in the shelf. I got it at the 1200 clearance price. WHAT A GREAT DEAL! This is a great DVD player. Even if you spend 200 for it, which it is most places, you will have a steal. This is a must buy
