Weakness:

Rude and dishonest customer service. Poor design

I purchased this product new. The first day I experienced the vibrating problem. Instead of returning it I took it in for warranty service. (big mistake) It was at the repair shop over 4 months due to unavailability of parts. After I got it back it had static in the right channel. The warranty was now up but the repair shop had a thirty day warranty. This time it took over two months to fix. During the six months I was without the player I called Toshiba numerous times. To be nice I will just say they were very rude and lied to me several times. It was a terrible experience. I have had the dvd player back for approximately 3 months now and the vibrating noise has returned. The warranty has expired and since I refuse to put money into a bad design I am going to shop for a new player. One thing is for sure, I will never buy a Toshiba product again.

Strength:

Great sound and build quality

Weakness:

Vibration noises, Warranty

When I first brought this unit home, I thought the price was to good to be true. After about a week I noticed the rattle in the transport mechanism. I returned it and got another. This unit took about two months and now has the same vibration in the transport as the first. The warranty covers parts for 1 year but labor for only 90 days. When it doesnt vibrate, the SD2000 plays music flawlessly and picture quality is not bad either. If you you are in the market for a new DVD player I wouldnt recommend this after seeing the numbers of people having the same issue as me.

Strength:

Great onboard decoding, super CD playback, and almost flawless picture quality. Stunning build and looks. One of the best value high-end players on the market

Weakness:

Vibrating transport problem rears it's ugly head every now and again. Disc access time isn't the very best.

Note: This is a review of the European SD900E - exactly the same player but with a different model number. Why...? First of all - yes I do get the occasional 'humming' sound from some discs, but no, it doesn't seem to impede AV quality to any noticable degree. I also find the auto shutoff feature mildly annoying. With that out of the way...this is an exceptionally good value DVD player. I strongly recommend you use (or at least try) the onboard Dolby Digital/DTS decoding, as the detail level and brightness of the sound is quite startling. Only thing that isn't brilliant is dynamics. Interlaced picture quality is supremely good (I don't use prog scan) with low noise, good detail, natural colours, and very little in the way of artifacting (I know this is disc-dependant, but some players can emphasise this problem whilst others do a good job of supressing it). The CD playback deserves a mention - detail, dynamics, timing, and attack are all first rate for a DVD player at this price level. If you don't require the absolute best in CD playback, this will certainly match many a good £500 dedicated CD player.

Strength:

sound, build quality, picture, versatility.

Weakness:

noisy when loading some discs

Simply stunning picture and sound quality. This machine is built like a tank. The progressive scan picture is beautiful. Did have a little noise when loading up some of my dvd's. I will take it in for that fix very soon. But other than that, it is beyond my expectations. I was thinking about getting the marantz 6200 player, but when I saw this beauty I couldn't resist. No regrets whatsoever.

Strength:

Picture Quality, Built And Apperance.

Weakness:

None..

I am not sure why all this other people had such issue's with their 9200. When i got mine i love the way it was built "SOLID" is the word for it. And at the same time the reason we are all buying a progressive dvd is because of picture quality not "SOUND". This is were your pre-amp comes in and amps, speakers. Other than that i am glad that found this dvd at the price i paid, this not a refurb, brand spankin new.

Strength:

Solid build, excellent appearance, Very functional and easy to nange remote. A fine unit for viewing DVD video, and a not so shabby DVD audio, HDCD audio, CD audio player.

Weakness:

Did I mention this unit turns itself off after 20 minutes and resets a number of user settings to "default" in the process?

I'm in agreement with a number of others who have reviewed this unit on the build quality of the SD-9200; massive & solid! I am pleased to report that the transport issue mentioned amongst the reviews is not apparent in this (my) unit. Thank God, as I would have probably shipped it back. Even though I am impressed by the video quality and the relative ease of navigating the remote while viewing DVD's, I am not overwhelmed by the audio features/quality. Suffice it to say that when compared to other units of similar price/advertised specs, it does not stand out in any appreciable way. One REALLY bogus "feature" that perturbs me no end (if I hadn't went through a lot of trouble placing this unit into my existing system, I may have returned it on this alone) is the AUTO-SHUTOFF feature after 20 minutes. One of the settings which "reverts" to default is the Audio Only selection. One must also reset the display dimmer. I can't stress enough how utterly MAD this feature makes me! Does it seem like engineering ideas are getting more rediculous with each passing day? How much energy are we saving by having this thing reset to default values and turn itself off? Oh well, I didn't mean to get so wordy. That's one hell of a feature. . . I DO LOVE the overall look of this thing. And the blue light denoting Video On & Audio Only is beautiful at night, when you have the LCD display off (which diverts to BRIGHT ON when the machine turns itself off). . . There I go again. . .

Weakness:

Noisy transport Unusable and unfixable remote control

I have had only trouble with this unit. The first one was returned due to the noise problem as previously descibed by others. The second unit arrived with the same problem plus the inability of the remote control to go backwards on CD tracts without hitting it at least 3 or 4 times from a distance of no more than 5 feet. So far Toshiba has said the remote is unfixable. The motherboard has been replaced but that has not fixed things. People say the unit is built like a brick. Unfortunately that does not translate into a workable unit in my case

Strength:

Sharp picture quality and very natural color rendition.

Weakness:

Sound quality better on Marantz players for less money.

I believe the 9200 is known as 900E in some markets. Its known as the 900E in Australia. I have been pretty happy with the performance of the player. I found that it performed better when compared with a budget model with a Videon or Dream Vision line doubler / scaller. The differences in picture quality btwn a good player and the best player (9200) is extremely subtle. You have to know what you are looking for and remember picture quality is extremely dependent on the software. I found that the Marantz DV6200 and DV18 had much better sound, however, the picture quality of the Tosh was better. Tosh don't do fantastic quality sound...their core competence is in picture quality and my comparison confirmed these. The 9200 (900E) here has no noise mechanism problem whatsoever !! I also compared the Tosh against Denon 2800.

Hi folks, Posting a quick follow up on this product because I was one of those who had the transport noise problem. After a couple of months of play, this noise seems to have gone away. A particular disk that used to "buzz" loudly every time I played it, no longer does that. I have not had any buzzing whatsoever for quite awhile now. I think that in my case there must have been some sort of tolerance/adjustment/tightness problem that seems to have worked itself out. Just letting everyone know that there is hope-anyone else have one that just fixed itself?

Strength:

Progressive Scan/DD/DTS/HDCD/Direct Audio (Cuts off the Video Circuitry when audio playback is on)

Weakness:

SACD (If its really a weakness)

This unit is an upgrade from my recent Toshiba 6200 player.....In addition to be a top performer, this unit became a great value when the price was dropped over $700 from its first introduction to the market. Besides it being a great value and a reference player, it truly outperforms all other players in its league (Sony 9000ES, Denon 3800, Pioneer Elite 47A) with regards to Video playback and Audio (CD) applications. In addition to its excellent Audio playback, the unit also plays HDCD. ( yeah I know it doesn''t do SACD, but the SACD discs available are so few and far between I''d rather wait until it a wider variety of discs become available) As in previous reviews, this unit is built like a brick house!....I do not experience any of the transport noises as previously mentioned, but in speaking w/my dealer (A&B TV) if there ever was a problem, they would make sure it was taken care of. These guys at the store are truly a class act...... They have always offered excellent service and this is why I take all of my business to them! As far as the upgrade from the 6200, the DVD Video is slightly better and the Audio is a bit warmer although not dramatically better, but still well worth the investment!!!!!
