Strength:

So far it has been reliable.

Weakness:

CD playback just OK. No cd-r playback.

I can''t say that I have had any problems with this unit...especially the ones described here. I use the unit mostly for movies, and for movies it does a wonderful job! The ZOOM is a great function and not easily found on a unit this price. Audio playback is OK, altough not nearly as good as my old Rotel.

Strength:

Moderate price.

Weakness:

Nearly DOA.

This review is actually for the Toshiba SD3755, but I''m placing it here until that model is listed on audioreview. This unit wasn''t DOA, but it was definitely on life support when UPS dropped it off on my doorstep. Damaged during shipping, or just poor QC on Toshiba''s part? With so many quality products available, there''s no reason for me to take that chance -- this will be the first and last Toshiba product for me. Once out of the box and plugged to an outlet, the sleek and lightweight player started acting up immediately. Noticed right away that the disc tray wouldn''t fully close, and never could get it to recognize a disc. After several minutes of operation, the tray would only remain open for a few seconds before closing on its own whim (watch out for your fingers). I''ve read other reviews of Toshiba players that exhibit this very same problem. Finally, the tray quit functioning altogether and the power wouldn''t shut off, so I unplugged the unit and stuffed it back in the box. Back to Ubid it went, and I pity the poor guy who gets stuck with this thing once its refurbished.

just a quick word of advice for all you having cd-r problems: i have only found 1 cd-r type to work for this dvd player, and that is the cold colored memorex. BUT, latley i have found that memorex CD-RW (yes, re-writables) play 100%. i think its because the disc is black and not clear like a cd-r so as of right now, i know the cd-rw work fine... i han''t tried the black cd-r''s yet. p.s. had my player over a year... still no problems with it... looks like i''m one of the lucky ones!

Strength:

Works well, sounds good, looks good

Weakness:

slightly irritating controls

This is my first DVD player (other than Playstation 2)and I'm very satisfied with it. It works fine. It looks good on my small tv. It plays VCDs fine. I have replaced my NAD CD changer with this unit, and I think the sound is better. There is not much difference in the sound of CD players, but this player is about as clear as I've heard, and plays discs that were skipping on other players, suggesting that it has a first-rate tracking mechanism. I like it. The 5-star rating is within the context of its peers. I hope that $1000 players are significantly better, but I doubt $300 players are, at least for a year or two.

Strength:

excellent quallity picture quality, 3 different types of video out (s-video, component, and composite) and 4 types of audio output (coaxial, optical, discreet 5.1, and 2.0)

Weakness:

just the momentary pause that happens when dvd's switch to the second layer. (but most, if not all, dvd players do this)

when i went dvd shopping, i knew i wanted a toshiba. there are just certain brands you buy for certain products. if you want a reciever, you buy yamaha, denon, or h/k. if you want a tv, you buy sony or toshiba, and when you want a dvd players, you want to get a toshiba.

a 5 disc changer is nice! go rent some dvd's and throw them all in at once and then you don't have to keep changing them.

most dvd players have the 3 types of video outs, but only 2 forms of 5.1 audio outs (coaxial and optical), but this dvd player has a specific audio components for each channel (fronts, rears, center, and sub) i have an older reciever without a 5.1 decoder, so with these outs, i can still get 5.1 sound just the same!

and i don't know what people are complaining about on the size. its the same size as a 5-disc changing cd player! and if it were smaller, then you couldn't stack other components on top of it.

i bought mine for $300 and i am absolutley positive it beats anything in its price range.

Strength:

Great Features for the price

Weakness:

Doesn't play Dubbed CD's

Great Product for the cash, full of features including HDCD and 4x digital zoom, a breeze on the learning curve, BUT this unit does not play dubbed CD's. All of them work in every other CD player in my house and car, even fresh ones don't work...Sooooooo it's back to the store. I plan to buy a Toshiba single tray, and probably a 200+ Sony changer for a few bucks more. So, great deal if you don't burn, CD's. If your going to build a CD player, build one that plays CD's....

Strength:

CDR n CDRW play. 5 disc changer. Not too many DVD's offer optical, component, AND 5.1 for Digital Surround output. Dolby decoder built in. Great picture. Fast disc changer.

Weakness:

Must have remote to play some discs. Does not have a big LCD display showing DTS, Dolby Surround is selected. You have to push on display on the remote.

IT PLAYS CDR AND CDRW. No doubt about it. You must use specific brands. Memorex, Imation, and other CDR-CDRW I have used did NOT work. The best brand to use that works 100% is CompUSA generic brand. The ones sold in 50 pk or 100 pk. They are stamped Princo in tiny little letters on the hub. Got my 50 pk for 19.99. For CDRW's, I use the GQ brand from Fry's Electronics. It is reconized %70 of the time. Sometimes you'll have to reload the CD for the DVD player to play it. I can burn Audio CD and Video CD's using Nero 5, Easy CD Creator 5, NTI CD Maker 2000. Tried to create SVCD (super video cd), has not work for me yet. You can find more info on how to create your home videos or VHS onto VCD's at VcdHelp.com .

Ok, My wife had grabbed the T-shirt before I got home. It's actually pretty cool. I highly recommend Consumer-direct.com, I called with some setup questions and they were very helpful.

Strength:

Plays cd-r's, has lots of options, can decode HDCD, great image, and a great remote controle.

Weakness:

Two channel audio output seems weak. I really have to crank up the volume to get sound. also if you intnd to use it as a cd player, the sound is a little thin. I placed my Musical Fidelity X-10D in between the DVD and the Pre amp which dramatically improved its sonics.

it still has to be broken in, but so far I'm satisfied with the overall performance. Sure it has its Quirks, but every compay has its particularities. Just look at what you are getting for the price. A 24/96 Khz processor, HDCD decoding, wonderful audio and video output options, plays my CD-R's (I don't understand why other people have problems with it),...
For the price, you can't go wrong.

Strength:

looks, remote ease of use, number of inputs and outputs, great picture and sound

Weakness:

big (had to cut out back of stereo cabinet to fit it) can't use it for DVD's without remote

I have a 32" Toshiba T.V. and a 6-head Toshiba VCR and I have never had any problems with either of them, so i went and bought this DVD player. The picture quality is excellent-easily comparable to more pricey higher-end DVD players like Denon, Pioneer etc..Unless you have lots of money don't waste it on more expensive DVD players, this one has all the features you will need for the right price.Only one thing bad to say about it....I brought it to my dad's along with a TV set-up disc to set the colours, sharpness etc.. on his TV , but I forgot the remote. Was disappointed to find out that you can't even start the disc without the remote. It will only take you to the menu screen on the DVD and that's it....hittting play twice won't do you any good...you need to have the remote to hit the enter key to advance.... My previous JVC DVD player had it so that the play and enter buttons did the same thing..
