Strength:

Looks good, plays good, good build quality.

Weakness:

Still not a $1,000 DVD Player

All in all just an awesome product. I bought it online from Ubid.com for $207 plus 25 in shipping. I have so far been very impressed with its quality and ease of use. For me, the remote works just fine. If you are in the market for a $200-$400 DVD Player I highly recommend this one. Oh, and yes I can hear the difference between regular CD's and HDCD's.

Strength:

Great picture, component Video Rocks

Weakness:

Remote is whacky

I have viewed about 10 movies so far, without a hithc, until i tried to look at the Matrix. At the 15th scene and beyond the picture becomes distored and unviewable. I checked to see if the disk needed cleaning and it didnt. After emailing Netflix (where i rent DvD's from)the responce was my player needed a minor hardware update. I also spoke to a couple friends and they also said the same thing. Can anyone else confirm this problem?

Aside form that issue this is my 1st DvD player and i luvvvvv it. After i have seen my 1st movie, (StarGate)I was hooked. I have summized that DvD is a technology sent from heaven.

I hope i dont have to send this player to get fixed, i hope it was an isolated thing. I am going to rent another matrix to see if the problem occurs again.

Strength:

Dual Draw, Style

Weakness:

None So Far

Ok got it and hooked it up, just using standard tv input and 2 channel audio output but did pay extra for gold tiped cables. Played Matrix, Batman & Robin, Godzillia all played fine but during the Matrix their was a small pause in the scene where they are all entering the matrix to see the old women and are just leaving the room in the old building. The remote doesn't bother me because i don't use it much and the zoom feature is nice just waiting to use different angle fuction. hvaen't rented any DVD's yet but i will. If you have questions about DVD disc's go to DVDreview.com.

Strength:

Picture quality, HDCD capability, price

Weakness:

Lack of fast forward button on remote

After extensive research on similar models, I chose the 3109 because of picture quality and ease of use. The dual tray is nice, especially for music, but have not used it much. HDCD is smooth and the vocals really shine. Onecall.com has these for $297 delivered, over $100 less than Best Buy.

Strength:

Rock solid, no problems with picture or sound

Weakness:

I picked this up from Onsales and I've been very pleased with it. This was my first DVD player and it has performed perfectly.

The video quality and is just what you would expect from a DVD player. I've compaired it to higher end units and can't justify spending two or three times the price for little or no difference in picture quality.

No complaints on the remote either. Everything is there and it does what it needs to.

I like the zoom feature although I don't use it much. The dual trays don't do much for me either, although Its nice to play both Austin Powers movies back to back.

Looks and remote

3109 replaced my Panasonic A100 as I needed DTS output. Setup menus are nice, as is the info screen showing time remaining, bitrate etc. 2x FFwd is nice but 8x and 30x pretty jerky (BTW if you have a Philips Pronto Remote you can download a ccf file for the 3108 and use its discrete buttons to put it directly to x2 x8 or x30 rather than having to hold down the FFWD button).

The Machine is really UGLY. It weighs next to nothing. It looks cheap and plasticy and WHY does it have a turquoise blue button on the middle of it to change trays? The due trays work fine but it's really a bit of a gimmick. Suppose you could use it to keep your favourite audio CD in one tray and use the other for movies. Only time I used it was when watching "Dances with Wolves - DTS" which comes on 2 discs. Remote is below average but heh...I have a Pronto :-)

Major downside for me is that it won’t work at all with CD-Rs or CD-RWs (even my old A100 would play CD-RWs).

All-in-all though “it does what it says on the tin”.

The freezing of some DVD's, but this only happened twice and it was to the same DVD>

Got mine from Consumer Direct... They had it in stock, I ordered it friday at 2:30 (after their shipping cut off).. Ordered it next day, saturday delivery, and It showed up at about 9:30 am via Fedex... Gotta say, I'm very happy with consumer direct. They actually charged me what it costs them to ship it... no "Handeling Fee". They met uncles stereo price of 349, and shipping with Saturday delivery was about $55.00. I am very happy with the unit. No glitches to date (I've had it for 2 weeks now). Video is great, and clear as it can be (My TV is an 5 year old toshiba, so it's not flat or anything like that). CD music is much more detailed, highs are more crisp, and lows are "Tightly" defined. the HDCD decoding is awesome. I would not rate the cd playback to be "Audiophile" Quality, but for a 350.00 unit which also plays DVD's, Video CD's etc, it's damn good. I love the two disk capabilities. The Remote isn't the greatest, but hey, it works for me.

Toshiba toshiba toshiba such a nice machine what did you do to the remote you try to make it nice with glow in the dark keys but quite honestly it stinks every time i touch it my hand smells..Had the 2109 upgraded to 3109 love the machine but i have one problem with setup in operation Pause/still .AUTO: For normal use. images can be paused without shaking. Ok that works wonderfully..
FRAME: The resolution of still picture is improved. So that you can make a motionless picture more clearer when you pause it. NOW thats where Im buggin out on when i pause it on frame it the still picture shakes like it has a bad case of the flu..now I know toshiba wouldn't do that or would they..Anyway can some one email me and let me know if my player is defective or not. Try this step repeataly.other then that it recieves 4 speakers and a tweeter...
