My DVD3109 was unable to read any disk (CD or DVD) after the first 5 weeks of use. It was too late to return it, but still under "parts and labor" warranty.I took it in to the shop over 6 weeks ago. The read head is dead and there is a national back order on the part. I only used it a few times and now it's useless. I have contacted Toshiba support and they refuse to respond to my inquiries. I am very disappointed with Toshiba. The product, when it worked, was mediocre at best.

Don't buy one of these.

After reading the reviews on the this site I decided to checkout the player at my local dealer. I finally bought it, set it up at home and tried Bug's Life. The only thing it displayed was "Loading..." for about five minutes. Tried several times but nothing; on a brand new disk! I finally stopped messing with it after 20 min. and took it back to the store. Needless to say I'm glad I bought it locally! From my short impression: the remote is clunky and the dual tray feels fragile (and I have kids), the unit is very light.

In summary, poor quality control, and cheap construction.

I exchanged the player for a Sony DVP-S330. See my review.

After researching the reviews on many of the sub $500 DVD players, I noted:1) DVD is not an exact science yet (many bad DVD players, lip sync, etc).
2) Toshiba 3109 seemed to be the best product in the catagory.
3) However many 3109s seemed to have quality problems (won't read).

Because of the potential quality problems, I bought mine local (Best Buy)in mid August. Within the 1st few days, I noticed vertical black lines in bright white areas that occur to the right of dark areas. I figured that I got a bad one and was prepared to return it. However, since my Zenith TV is 10 years old and does not have an S-video input, I pulled my 13 inch Samsung in from the bedroom, hooked it up and "what do ya know" the problem was gone! I rehooked the cable to the Zenith and was able to effect the problem by wiggling and changing the RCA cable. I hypothisized that the problem was caused by my TV. I chalked up the issue as another reason my wife should allow me to buy a new TV. Has anyone had similar experiences? Is it possible that the DVD signal is too rich for my TV to handle???

Otherwise, I love the unit. It reads all the DVDs I have tried. I sounds great. the remote doesn't bother me (except I have to open it to zoom). When I purchased it, I did not expect to use the dual tray. However, I now constantly change one DVD while the other is playing (I use it!).

I'm keeping this review simple, I absolutely love this player. I got it at a bid site for 269$ and it was worth every penny. I was a bit apprehensive at first because of the love it, hate it, type of reviews on this site. When I got it and set it up, no problems. Dolby Digital 5.1 is great and the picture is sharp. The menu system is not as fancy as my friends Sony, but I'd rather have an all around functional player than to potentially run into lip synch problems. I also agree the dual disc trays are a litte bit flimsy, but just use the open/close buttons and don't slam around the system (easy solution, eh?). Honestly, some people whine way too much on here just because they can. Getting back to the subject, the trays are very functional. I own a lot of 2 disc movies so they work out perfect and is a welcomed bonus. The system has a faily good look about it. The remote has a logical button layout and I like the cross pad a lot for navigation. For these reasons I like the remote, but hey, everyone's tastes in remotes are different. The unit is a bit light, however being a dvd player I don't care about the weight as much as I would with a reciever, amp, or speakers (real stuff where weight should be considered a factor). It is a great value overall considering how much of a consumer audience Toshiba is trying to appeal to. The amount of people buying and reviewing this player attributes to this fact. So overall, Need a great DVD player with some extras and have a budget like a normal person? Be a lemming, or at least go check it out...

I've had this unit now for about 3 months. It is awesome! I enjoy movies more than ever and the clarity, detail, and sound I find is terrific. I've played rentals, new, HDCD's and all have performed flawlessly. I don't use the cd tray to hold my 44 once big gulp and feel the build quality is fine for its intended purpose. The 5.1 audio puts you inside the picture. It just makes you feel like Uncle Walter used to say, "You are There".
I'd encourage anyone to find one with more features, and audio, video quality than this unit has for the price. Check it out!

This DVD player is a bargain for the price. Both the video and audio quality have been flawless. I would like it better if it played CDRs, but it is still a five star product.
