Strength:

Excellent picture quality, reliability(it looks like I got lucky),price(I got it for $279 from onsale.com which was $100 cheaper than the retail stores in my area at the time)

Weakness:

Not really a weakness but the dual tray is a waste(IMO).

This is a follow-up review. I purchased this unit on 11/99 and I've had very few problems with it. It used to freeze ocassionally on certain movies but it rarely does that anymore. I can't complain but I'll probably go with a Panasonic the next time. Like I said, our unit has been very reliable but the problems suffered by others kinda scare me. I always thought Toshiba made reliable products but I guess I was wrong.

Strength:

Dual Disc - fiber out, and component out

Weakness:

old age, disks start to hang, and pixel

My wife bought this when it was brand new in summer '99 and it worked quite well for 18 Months. After that time I started to see random hangs of DVD movies, etc. I have used it over 400 times, as my son watched the rugrats, and we rent and own lots of DVD's. At first, the problems were quite rare and random but they got worse and now about every 4th movie played usually freezes after 40 minutes of playing or so. Sometimes just stopping and restarting the movie corrects the problem, but sometimes the player totally freezes and I have to power the player down and reload the disc.

Strength:

Nice quality picture

Weakness:

Prone to breakdown, poor warranty, pre-progressive scan

This is my primary DVD player. I've had it somewhere around 3 years now. About 6 months into having it, one of the dual trays got stuck and wouldn't open. I discovered the hard way that Toshiba's warranty is wimpy--it has 1 year parts and 3 months(!) labor. Naturally, labor is high and I spent an additional $140.00 replacing the chasis.

Within the last year or so, when I try to switch trays, nothing happens. I have to go over to the machine and manually take the DVD out, reinsert it, and try again. This usually fixes it.

I love the picture, and everything else is okay (only so-so remote). Overall, I'd probably opt for another DVD player instead of this one if I had it to do over again.

Strength:

Sound and video are excellent to superb.

Weakness:

Would go better with HDTV for those of us with old standard televisions that just won't quit.

Completely enhances the home theater experience. Both audio and video are superb. The digital sound decoder worked with my a/v amp to dazzle my audience and myself. Clarity of picture is a quantum improvement over vhs and standard television.

Strength:

Great Auido Features and Reliability

Weakness:

Does not play CD-R's, Remote Dependant

I got this player about a year and a half ago and have had no problems with it. The reliability for me has been great. The thing even survived a move in a U-Haul with no signs of problems. The loading times are decent, the Panasonic DVD/VHS player at my parents home loads alot slower then this thing. The audio features are great. I did not do much reasearch into DVDs at the time but all the little Audio format icons are what attracted me to this model. The only major beef I have is that the thing does not play CD-R's, that was a bummer. The picture quality has been great, as I would expect from DVD's. Also, every single DVD I put in the thing plays. Overall I would recommoned this unit to anyone who just wants to watch DVD's.

Strength:

Excellent picture. Easy to use. Twin tray is great for those DVD's that come with 2 disks. You can turn the display off which is a nice feature.

Weakness:

Slow load time. Large remote.

This is an excellent 'entry-level' DVD player. I have encountered no problems with this particular player. Picture quality is excellent. I purchased this DVD player in the United States, at the time it was cheaper than Canada. I seemingly lucked out and reduced my overall cost by selling the "free" DVD's they included with the player - they're garbage movies anyways. Likewise, I also received 24 free Movie rentals from Blockbuster (double the amount I should have received because Blockbuster screwed up) which further reduced my cost. Would I purchase this DVD player again? Yes,it's a good value. Of course, this is a consumer audio product and you aren't going to find a real noticeable difference across brands, i.e Sony, Toshiba, JVC.. I chose this particular model for the twin tray feature and for its flexibility in terms of connection possibilities. If you are a Videophile and absolutely crazy for DVD then move to another brand such Runco. This particular player is for the budget conscious who want a few extra features out of DVD.

Strength:

bullet proof, ability to produce signal simultaneously in the component video, and s-video output feeds.

Weakness:

no multiregion hack, no macrovision disable, never wanted to leave the US

my first dvd player, I used it for over a year, running 24 original rentals each month through it with nary a rejection.

but then I moved, and dvd's got way cheaper, but they were no longer "ntsc" or so the error message on the toshi says.

i agree with it's review in one of the online test mags, a great unit for original US DVDs. but now you can do better, cheaper.

Strength:

It was nice to have double drive for the DVD. It contained a lot of nice options for the price.

Weakness:

Reliability and Manufacturer. I have used the DVD about 70 times over the past two years. Suddenly it stopped loading the DVD's. I called the manufacturer and they were rude and very unhelpful. I don't remember the last time I had Sony or other product break after so little use.

I would recommend the product for the quality of picture but DO NOT buy this unit if you want a quality product that the manufacturer stands behind. I can't believe I bought a $400 unit and got maybe 70 movies on it to work. That is $5 per movie. I guess I could have gone to the theater for less. Bummber.

Sorry for the negativity but I want to save others from the headache.
