Weakness:

does not play some new DVD's - just picked up Gladiator, and was not amused

Clean looking unit, but unimpressed with the incompabability issue of some discs, have not narrowed it down to a specific disc manufacturer, but also happend with Mission To Mars. A Friend also has an older Toshiba unit and has similar problems, but with different movies??? very strange. Have read above that there is a possibile solution of sending it in to Toshiba to get re-coded... this does not inspire confidence so I have sold mine and am picking up the Sony 7700...
Also agree that the remote is a little unweildy.
As for who to recommend this to... not someone that is an audiophile, it would drive me nuts (as it had started to... to pick up a movie and have in the back of my mind... will this movie play??) but more the person who just wathes on occasion and can deal with a few glitches here and there.

Strength:

Very good sound, Great picture quality, quiet

Weakness:

some jitter, too many dvds wont load

I bought this dvd player around christmas 1998 and up until recently could not have been happier with player. On new releases I get messege "please check disc", this has occured on Gladiator, American Beauty, and Mission Impossible 2. Hope this is problem with software, older DVDs load and play fine. I plan on calling Toshiba and sending unit for service. I am encouraged by other reviewers who have been offered free upgrades. I realize dvd is a relatively new technology, but feel this problem should have been taken care of by Toshiba as a recall of sorts, customers who bought these units and registered their purchase should have been notified.

Strength:

Good Unit

I wrote about the firmware problem a few reviews back and I am writing to let you know I received the unit back from the repair center in Atlanta. It came back 20 days after I sent it in. It now works perfectly and plays all the new movies without a hitch. I was told that it will also play CD-R's now, but I have not tried it yet.

I did receive the upgrade for free which I expected. So for those of you who are getting the $65 quote, I would try calling back to talk to someone else there or speak to a manager to let them know how you feel this firmware issue is not a 'repair'. Let them also know that doing it for free would keep you loyal to their brand rather than looking to other 'Sony' brands in the future.

Even customer service should know that spending a dollar now to make people happy will give them ten dollars in future revenues.

Strength:

Inputs/Outputs, quality

Weakness:

Wouldn't pplay newer disks

Very happy with it until American Beauty, Gladiator and MI2 wouldn't play. Read all the reviews on this site, so contacted Toshiba.

Much to my surprise, their tech support rep was awesome - very efficient and a credit to the business. Even better, he gave me an authorization code for a free fix. So I paid $19 for FedEx, and had the fixed player back inside a week - again much to my surprise.

All told, a very annoying experience, given the wasted DVD rentals, but I feel they did the right thing in getting it fixed, and the level of service was excellent.

If they try and charge you for the upgrade, I'd suggest breaking the connection and trying to speak to someone else. This has also worked for me when changing airline tickets and avoiding change charges - different person, different answer.

On another notes, I didn't realise what the problem was as my neighbor had similar problems - couldn't play AB, and not all of MI-2. But he has a year old Sony......so maybe it's not just Toshiba?

Finally, regarding the class action, I think it's already been done r.e. laptops, as I have a T8000 for work and had to send in all info to corporate so they could make a claim.

Strength:

Clean look, picture quality, on screen menu's and features.

Weakness:

T H E R E M O T E I S U S E L E S S!

Overall the unit can best be described as, "Could've been a Star!". However there are way too many UI bugs in the system, I wouldn't purchase a Toshiba product ever again, period! Almost every review on this thread has referenced a poor user experience with the remote. Clearly, Toshiba "streeted" this model series knowing there were major bugs with the remote controls among other issues.

There are additional bugs with the digital processing units, I have experienced bitstream buffering in the Matrix, SPR, Top Gun, and even Practical Magic.

BTW, no one has mentioned the issue with time it takes to spool a disc? There can be up to a 10 second delay at times.

I would love to address the benefits to owning this player but...

Strength:

Great feature set, crystal-clear picture and sound.

Weakness:

I concur about the remote. It's big, klunky, and only seems to work when it feels like it. Also, won't transmit while the back light is on. Has anyone else experienced this?
If you get this player, do yourself a favor and get a decent universal remote.

I got this player last December and have been using it ever since. At the time, the feature set offered could not be beat. Unlike some of the other reviews here, in all the time I've used this player, I've never had a problem playing a DVD, either purchased or rented. Picture has been perfect through s-video, wouldn't recommend composite. The sound through Klipsch 8.5 fronts and Yamaha rears has been excellent!

Having to go through the upgrade process was a hassle but definately worth it. It seems that upgrades are a part of life now and unfortunately DVD is not immune. I have been very happy with this unit and have suggested other Toshiba products to friends.

I own the unit for over a month now. I do have the same complain as Michael K's about the remote. The only button that works at all time is the "PAUSE" even if you're not pointing it at the unit. You have to point directly at the unit for all other functions. Other than that, the picture quality, features and usability are all excellent. I just wish they can change the color of the tray from silver to black. I think it may look better with my DSP-A1.
