Strength:

excellent picture and sound quality. Easy to navigate menu's, 16x Zoom, NUON game compatible.

Weakness:

no Dolby 5.1 decoders, no optical audio outputs

I have been using this player for about a month. The performance of this player is exhilerating. Just pop in "The Matrix" to find out what I am talking about. It also had a demo nuon game CD coming along with the box. There is a small joystick like device that comes along with the remote. The best thing about the player is the superb picture/sound quality. I have not had a single problem playing any CD's...either new or rented. which bring me to the question.....why all those bad reviews listed in this web site..? It had me a bit worried that something could be wrong. It is exactly the same as the SD-2200 except that the Dolby decoders has been replaced with NUON capabilties. The 2200 has a rating of 4.45 ! wherease this one is 3.6. for no apprarent reason as far as I can see. My only guess is that the hardware did have defects when it was first released which has been corrected for the models that where manufacured more recently.
2300 is a better deal if you already have a Dolby receiver that has the decoders in it. you get a lot of extra features with NUON capable discs.
The verdict.... this is terrific player which will leave you gaping at its abilities.

Though I posted already, I'm doing it again simply because I'm miffed that the value rating for this hunk of junk went up due to the fact that I gave it a FAIR DEAL...Who the hell CARES about a fair deal if the unit is garbage!? so now I'm voting low on BOTH VALUE & OVERALL ratings!

Strength:

Zoom, Sound.

Weakness:

Picture shifts into blackness.

I only bought this DVD player today, and it's going back tomorrow. I wanted to give Toshiba a chance, thinking Panasonic could no longer be as good as it used to be. The number of Toshiba features convinced me that I should buy it. I did like the zoom a lot, being able to get the most of my 19 inch Panasonic TV ($700, ten year ago). Unfortunately, the picture is just not of the right brightness at all. Blacks continue to shift from black to way too black, giving a very annoying feeling that I didn't experience with VHS. This is my first DVD, and am I disappointed.

Strength:

Features galore. Toshiba usually gives the most for the money.

Weakness:

Pixelation and slow loading menus.

I reviewed this model several months ago after i first received the player for christmas. It has been a good performer. However, it did have a problem/tendency to pixelate.
I received the software upgrade not too long ago.
That seemed to fix the reoccuring problems.
BUT it has happened again on movies i have rented.
But it didn't make the menus load any faster :(
the audio is still superb
and the video (via svideo) is very clear and the same if not better than what i've seen on sony and onkyo models

basically, i really hope this software update has fixed the pixelation problems...
OTHERWISE TOSHIBA NEEDS TO MAKE A RECALL ON THESE AND JUST EAT IT

i mostly rent movies (and rednecks out there still dont understand that you can DESTROY a disc by scratching it and spilling your beer on it, etc.) come on people!!!

Weakness:

None so far.

I LOVE this unit. It is my first one so allow me to gloat alittle. I do not know about any technical problems the other nay-sayers have experienced in the past. I considered the Sony and Panasonic units but after a very positive review in Stereophile Guide to Home Theater, I took the plunge and purchased this unit at my neighborhood Best Buy store.

This new unit rocks baby! I watched Boogie Nights and the Matrix and was just blown away with the picture on my 25" Mitsubishi TV and the sound quality was great through my Yamaha Receiver(not AV-ready) and Snell speakers.
I can't wait to get a widescreen RPTV and Surround speakers, AV processor, etc. Oh well, I will just have to suffer with the great picture and sound I am getting now.

Oh yes, the sound on my old CDs puts me in
another world so clear, transparent, dynamic, with mucho bass, and the imaging is just superb baby! Blows my Marantz 63 MkII CD player away. A F$&)%&in' bargain!
