Strength:

Picture quality, ease of use, audio quality

Weakness:

Remote needs backlight

Great entry-level machine. Who needs to shell out 18 bucks to take your honey to the movies anymore? Audio quality is awesome. I haven't experienced any of the artifacts I've read in other reviews, but maybe I just don't know wha to look for. I'm never renting a videocasette again! I just wish my local Blockbuster/Hollywood Video outlets had more of a selection...but that's not Toshiba's problem. Great machine for the price...I paid $239.

Strength:

Awesome Picture, great sound output, dts capable, component out, perfect compatibility(thus far), decent CDDA output, great value

Weakness:

Only one digital out(coax),no VCD support

For the $279 that I paid for the Toshiba in January, I really couldn't have expected more. The picture is awesome using either the composite or s-video out, though I haven't been able to try component out yet. The stereo output is good using the rca jacks, and is surprisingly enhanced using the "Spatializer N-2-2" virtual 3D-audio mode. Procrastination has inhibited my ability to test out the DD or DTS output on a new receiver, however. As I alluded to in the strengths, compatibility has been flawless (even on "The Matrix"). Having used this machine for nearly a year, I can safely say that it had been extremely reliable.
Overall, if you can't already tell, I really love this machine. So much in fact, I bought another one last month for $199 for the bigscreen in the basement (no more use for my DVD anywhere, which is a great product in and of it self, BTW) For someone on a limited budget or buying an extra player, the Toshiba 2109 can't be beat for $199 (or even $249)

Strength:

THe picture and sound quality output, composite video output

This DVD is very good for its money. I have no problems with it. It plays the movies like saving private ryan, matrix, and mummy the movies that other players have problems with.

I have an earlier model Toshiba A110 (which I love) -- I just bought this model the 2109 for $199.40 (as a gift) -- including tax and shipping -- it was delayed a few days - but in perfect shape when I got it. I bought it from etown.com -- check it out if you are looking for this machine. Once it has been used, I will provide a true review.

The value rating is because of the incredible price -- the overall rating is high because I have a great previous model Toshiba and my sister has this model and loves it.

Strength:

Value for Money and Picture Quality that rocks.

Weakness:

Small remote and NO OPTICAL output.

The Toshiba really does have a great picture and set against a friends Denon 5000 there was no comparison, the toshiba at nearly a third of the price won hands down.
After reading these reviews I had to have one but was put off somewhat by the ZOOM feature that stayed up as commented by: , Audio Enthusiast from Albuquerque
Joseph Date Reviewed: 12/9/99 6:08:03 PM.
However after a play with the remote I found you can clear the ZOOM from the screen. Push the setup button and without altering anything push it again and the ZOOM disappears from the screen.( Nothing in the manual points to this but Hey IT WORKS!!!).

Strength:

All the outputs I need (s-video, component, composite)AC-3 and DTS out, excellent picture, very clean design. 3D adds space to some movies. Zoom brings me in closer for wide-screen movies.

Weakness:

It does not show remaining time on front panel except when showing complete diplay on tv screen. I really like to be able to glance at the front panel to see time remaining in a movie. Like just about everyone else, I think that the remote is sadly lacking, as it does not have backlit keys and the buttons are very small. I have to squint at it in the dark to find the buttons that I want.

Generally a very good machine and competitive in price. This is the first Toshiba product that I have owned, but I rented an earlier model SD-2008 a number of times before making the purchase. Toshiba is noted for producing rugged equipment and this machine has done all that it was built to do, and has operated perfectly. I really don't understand why the time remaining in a movie only shows in the front panel when a full display is on the tv screen. It would seem a simple matter to show the time remaining without having to flick the display key several times just to see the time remaining and to clear the tv screen again.
As a cd player, this is so-so, but I only have about 20 cd's. I mainly use this machine for movies, so this is not a major issue since the sound and picture quallity are excellent from DVD's when played on the SD-2109.

Strength:

Picture, sound, brand, price

Weakness:

No optical digital output, weak remote

This is my first DVD player, so I have little to compare it to. All I can say is that the picture and sound are fabulous. If you're buying your first DVD player, put the Toshiba SD-2109 at the top of your shopping list!

Strength:

Low cost, reliable

Weakness:

small remote buttons, drive noise, slow loading

I have had this DVD player for less than a month and have watched 5 movies on it, all without any problems of locking up or problems playing. For the money, there is no better DVD player, especially with component out (which hopefully my next tv will have).
