Strength:

Excellent picture quality.

Weakness:

Remote

I had the opportunity to compare this player directly with the Sony S7000. I played two copies of Armageddon side-by-side via my 32" monitors S-Video inputs, and I have to admit, I could not discern any difference in picture quality. The Sony did have a slightly better soundstage while playing CDs, but I bought the Tosh to watch movies.

Strength:

Great features, reliable playback, inexpensive

Weakness:

Remote is pretty lame.

I have had the 2109 since it came out. Great unit overall. No problems with any disk playback to this point. From looking at the specs at the time of purchase, this unit was the best deal in the low end priced players.

I would buy again.

Strength:

component video out

Weakness:

dead in the water

I traded a sony 330 for this unit simply because I wanted
to try another model, but when I hooked it up, it was dead
in the water. Wouldn't read a single disc I put in, DVD or
CD. It wasn't even spinning the disc, just sitting there
saying "No Disc". Also, when I took it out of the box, I
could here a screw or something rolling around inside the
unit. Not very impressive workmanship at all. Anyway, this
is going back and I'm going to try to pick up my old 330
as an open box unit. Sorry Toshiba.

Down conversion artifacts

I've hade this unit since May 99 and have nothing but praise
for it. I have played over 100 DVDs and never had a problem.

Strength:

Good Price, component output, dts

Weakness:

During the menu screens on many dvd's, the player vibrates excessively and make a rattling noise.

This is my first dvd player and despite the following problem I am content with its feautures and general performance. During the menu screens on many dvd's, the player vibrates excessively and make a rattling noise. The sound is extremely annoying and occurs frequently.

Strength:

Excellent Value

Weakness:

No Optical Out, few bells and whistles

This is a great player for the money. I picked up from Value America with some promotional dollars they were offering and I replced my Pan A10 which I have been having lots of pixelation problems with. Every disc I had a problem with Panasonic DVD player played flawlessley on the 2109, so far so good. I have no complaints about the tiny remote as I use a universal remote anyway. A great Value as you can find this player out there for less than $200.

Strength:

Great price, Excellent quality for low end model

Weakness:

Remote

The Toshiba 2109 is an excellent entry level DVD player. The biggest complaints I have are the layer change and remote. The layer change doesn't appear to be any worse than any other player I've seen but I wonder why they can't use a buffer like cd players? The remote is decent but doesn't have backlighting and very small buttons.

Strength:

Not buggy

Weakness:

Remote, could be setup better, I seem to always be fumbling for the right keys.

I like this player, have not had any problems so far. For the price($240) I feel it's been a great deal.

Great product. Has performed flawlessly. Excellent sound and picture. Performs well with scatched or dirty disks. Remote lacks a little, but universal remotes are abundant.

Strength:

Toshiba reputation

Weakness:

Widescreen flickering

I got this dvd player when it was $299, but I still think that it was a good deal. I have a widescreen television so there are no coversion problems :) The only problem that I have is that the black portion of the widescreen movies sometimes has flickering light spots in it (this is a known issue).
