Strength:

Price, zoom (i guess some people like it)

Weakness:

none really due to price

There are a few bad reviews of this player but when push comes to shove, can you really think of a better player under $250... under $225 online? C'mon, its not loaded with high end features and the remote isn't the best, but the picture quality it does deliver is well worth cost. I can think of about a half dozen players that are better, but everyone is at least $100 more.

I give it 4 stars not based on features, but for picture quality and price.

i got an email from toshiba. the problem i had with the toshiba is because my disks where dirty. so anytime i rent a dvd i clean it very well and no problem. dvd discs i iown i have never had a problem with. i understand dvd players are much more sensitive then cd players to dirt because the laser beam is smaller then the laser for cd. that is why sony uses a different laser for dvd then cd in its dvd players. but unfortunately toshiba and others dont. however i am not paying 3 times as much for the only sony model that has dts the 7700.so for under 300 this is still the number 1 machine.

picture, digital, dts

Weakness:

no optical out

Bought 5/99 for about 249. good deal at time, and no regrets. Just recently started enjoying the digital audio cababilites, and awsome! Cant use the component video outs, but the s-video AND composite video looks excellent. Yeah the remote has small buttons, but really doesnt bother me, and you can do just about anything with it. Havent had any problems with any discs (that werent the disc's fault),like Ive read about. Recommend highly

Strength:

Excellent picture and audio for films

Weakness:

remote, so-so audio quality as a cd player

I've used the 2109 for nine months and over a hundred films and it has not glitched once, even on the aforementioned "problem" titles": Matrix, Titantic, Private Ryan, etc. The picture quality is fine with S-Video and the sound quality superb.

On the down side, the small remote is useless in a darkened room, with all the "money" keys crammed together at the bottom. And once you've screwed up and hit "stop" twice by accident, pressing play will lead you not to the main menu, but to the beginning of the film. You have to turn the unit off and on to get back to the main menu! Annoying...

Overall a good value and a fine player, but would it kill Toshiba to include a decent remote with their entry level gear?

IF YOU HAVE A DECODER BULT INTO YOUR RECEIVER THIS IS THE PLAYER FOR YOU. I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS UNIT AND THINK IT IS THE BEST PLAYER FOR THE MONEY. DON'T SPEND MORE ON PLAYERS THAT OFFER THE SAME. TOSHIBA IS WERE IT'S AT.

stay away from the 2109...the sd-1200 model has better playback quality and features. It also has better build quality, but niether has digital audio output. The sd-1200 model replaces the 2109.

Folks, since there is no model review for the SD-1200, I figured I'd post here for those shopping around. First thing, don't buy the 2109, go ahead and get the 1200, it's got some new firmware and hardware that fix some of the problems with the 2109. I got my 1200 at a local electronics store a few weeks ago for $236. They weren't even on display yet. I went to get a 2109, they were out of them, I saw the 1200's way up on the top shelf, chewed on the manager for a bit, and ba-bing, I got a 1200 for the 2109 price. Works for me.....

I've watched quite a few movies and only had one hitch so far. Armageddon, which sucks as a movie, skipped a little bit about 3/4 way through. No skin off my back, like I said, the movie sucks! The Matrix, a famous DVD killer, played without a flaw, Saving Private Ryan, X-Files, and all others played fine as well. In fact, Armageddon was the only movie that had a hiccup. It was an old loaner from a friend, so I can't say whether it was dirty, scratched, or what might have caused the skip. I wouldn't be so quick to blame it on the DVD player until I see other posts with the same problem.

Overall, I have really enjoyed my SD-1200. I would highly recommend this DVD player. As has been stated about the 2109, the 1200 is the best DVD player under $300, hands down. The remote isn't as bad as everyone says....it ain't great, but it gets the job done. It could use some back lighting/glow and bigger buttons, but I've pretty much memorized the buttons I use regularly and don't have a problem with it. Hell, I've got 50" of TV lighting up the room, seeing buttons isn't a real problem. :-) I think the remote rant started a flaming chain that got out of hand. Geez, it's the year 2000 and you can screw with your laser disc player from across the freakin room......life is real tough these days......my $.02

Awesome picture, the very best color saturation of any dvd player I've seen. Price!!!

let me clear something up. 1) the 2109 does have a diqital audio out. It happens to be coaxial, but everyone I've talked to feels this is a better way to go anyway. 2) The remote is pretty silly, but if you have a
halfway decent avr w/ a remote,
you'll never use the toshiba remote
anyway. yes, my avr remote even
controls the zoom!! If you care at all about picture quality, toshiba is the only way to go.

good picture, crystal and detailled sound, can play some CDR

Weakness:

remote, speed reading, no jog shuttle on the front panel

my product is the new version of the 2109, the sd-100 E with an optical output. I was very surprised that this drive can actually play (and only play) Sony's CDR with extended optical technology.
