for $221. delivered you can't beat the price (ebay auction by vanns, inc., just type in search 'new toshiba dvd' and the majority of the auctions will be theirs. the player is virtually flawless while in play mode. love the 3X zoom, my, haven't we come far in technology? this is great and is worth $300 easily but can be bought at best buy for $245 out the door also. can't give any sound comments as we don't have anything other than stereo... enjoy!

Considering the price I paid, this unit has proven to be outstanding. Video and Audio quality are excellent, no jitters or pixelations that I've noticed. Would highly recommend this product to those looking for a low-cost DVD player!

Strength:

Crystal clear audio, looks good, auto shut off & screensaver, remembers your last scene after shutting down or stopping for a while. Nice step-by-step pause. x2, x8, x30 frame advances. On screen display is nice and also allows you to select the OSD colors.

Weakness:

Skips and freezes on some movies.

I have to say that this is my first DVD palyer and I don't understand the different between a "High End" and an "Entry Level" DVD player. Maybe someone can email me and explanation. anyway, onto the review.

Player:

There are not many flaws that I can find. The audio is superb, I am currently connected to the TV (27" Sony Trinition) via S-Video and the picture is just "WOW"! I don't like that it freezes everytime I am trying to watch the movie. And in a couple of instances the player skips a little when changing chapters. That gets pretty aggravation but I am far past the return period for the Good Guys and it isn't serious enough for me to send to Toshiba and be without DVD for a couple months.

Remote:

This remote has great featres but watching a movie in the dark and having to pause for the phone, the kids waking up, or any other general household interruption is just a pain in the A**!!! I HATE that remote is not backlit. Aside form that, the remote has perfectly placed directional/menu buttons, it's not too big or too small and doesn't have more buttons that what are needed.

Overall I have to give it a 3 on Video playback and a 5+ for audio.

Price, Features, Picture Quality

Weakness:

Phantom Beep. It will beep all of the sudden for no reason

For the price this is a great DVD player. Its the only one I own so I can't compare it to anything. The feature I enjoy most is the zoom. A lot of other DVD players don't have this feature. I have also have had no trouble playing ANY DVDs. I have played well over 200 different movies in this machine and it has not had one problem.

Durability, remote, easy to use

Weakness:

None for the price

After a year of owning this I came to the conclusion that I should put in a review (thought I'd already put one in!).

This unit has performed flawlessly for me thus far. Both the audio and video on this unit are excellent!

What more can be said that hasn't already? The main reason I bought this player was because of the reviews here. They were glowing. The second reason was I got five free movies with it, 10 free Blockbuster rentals, and 15 free Netflix rentals. If nothing else I paid for the rentals and got the DVD player free! Five stars all around for this unit, especially since you can't beat the deal I got!

Strength:

Great build quality. Was a good price back then. Very good audio and video.

Weakness:

Won't play CD-R's/CD-RW's.

Very good DVD player. Has a nice picture and good audio. Haven't had any problems with it unlike my Pioneer. Has been through three moves and numerous trips to my friends house. Still works like it did when it was brand new. The Pioneer went from the store to my entertainment center and didn't even last two months. Toshiba makes good DVD players for a reasonable price. I would recommend this or any other Toshiba DVD player.

Strength:

Excellent video and sound quality, 3 level zoom feature superior to other players in the price range.

Weakness:

Remote is hard to navigate and underpowered. Some dropped frames on layer changes on about 25% of DVD's.

As of 2/00, still the very best player for the money--and it doesn't make sense to spend more for the 1-2 years until the formats mature. I've had several people I know buy them, and they are delighted with them, too. Check for the best prices on PriceScan.com. Tip--if you get one, don't use the 3D sound or Enhanced Black level features. They get old after the first 5 minutes of "wow."

Picture and sound quality

Remote

This is an excellent DVD player for the price. I was choosing between the Toshiba SD-2109, Pioneer DV-525 and the Sony 330. The Sony did not have Component outputs (for future TV purchases) and the Pioneer did not put out as sharp a picture as the Toshiba.

Picture quality is very close to excellent with the S-Video connection! Colors are very vivid and level of detail is fantastic. Although on some features with a lot of detail, there is a bit of noise. (Star Trek Generations - opening scene where Enterprise-B is coming out of Space Dock, noticed some noise (moire?) in the area between the Saucer and bottom hull (the "neck" of the ship)). This may be due to my TV. It's the top of the line 27" JVC had back in 1995 but not top of the line now. Sound is excellent on movies. Presently running a Marantz Pro-Logic receiver w/ Paradigm speakers and the sound is a step above what I usually her of my hi-fi vcr. It is also a fair CD player. Can't wait to get a Dolby Digital receiver! No problems with skipping.

The only weakness is the remote. The buttons are small and it seems cheaply made. I was looking at a British DVD magazine which reviewed the SD-2109, and I saw the remote that the older 2108 (and the 3109 also?)uses. C'mon Toshiba! Stop short changing us Americans with crappy remotes.

Very Good to Excellent player for the price. Now only if Toshiba could change the remote.
