Strength:

Very solid unit. Slim and attractive design. Very practical and inexpensive. Excellent picture and sound.

Weakness:

Remote is small and is difficult to use in dimly lit area.

I sold my sd 2008 model to my neighbor because I wanted to upgrade my player. After some research I bought a SD 2200 since it was only about 80 bucks more than the 1800. I brought it home and was just not happy with it. I don't know why. I guess it was because the twin tray seemed very brittle and prone to breakage. I already had a sony receiver that did dts and dd, so I didn't need the built in decoder. The unit was big and bulky and looked awkard in my stereo entertainment center cabinet.

I returned the unit and bought a sd1200 instead. It was perfect. Single tray perfection and digital coax out along w/ s video and component video.
Simplicity is the homework of genius.

If you already have a receiver w/ dd decoding, this is the only player you'll need. Nothing gimmicky, just a rock solid box. You won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Terrific audio and video quality; tremendous "bang for the buck"; the "zoom feature."

Weakness:

none so far.

Here's an update from my initial review from April 21. After watching another half a dozen movies, and terrific concert DVD's by the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, and the Grateful Dead, I am just amazed at how much quality the Toshiba 1200 can deliver at its price point. Don't hesitate...buy this player. You'll be very happy indeed!

Strength:

good picture quality, value

Weakness:

outside case felt flemsy

I would have needed this unit to have a built in decoder to use in my A/V system. I hooked it up to a JVC 20" stereo TV. The picture was excellent. I'm not sure if the zoom has a real practical use, but I had a blast playing with it. I wasn't impressed by the CD playback, but my reference player is Krell. I lent the unit to a friend who likes the CD playback better then the CD player he currently has, an entry level of some sort. So I would say the 1200 holds it's own in the entry level CD playback. I haven't had any problems with DVD playback. The remote was fine to me. This is a great little unit & will give you a good value for your money.

Strength:

DVD beats the tar out of VHS; zoom is cool

Weakness:

remote is clumbsy; the fast forward and reverse don't seem to be in sync with the video (sometimes I'll be rewinding back to a certain scene, and then when I press play it will put me in a place even further back) also no sound during FF or REW

First DVD player I've owned. Mt receiver (Sony DA30ES) handles all of the digital decoding stuff. I read the reviews, and I compared prices until I settled on this unit in May.

First unit shipped from Mobshop was a disappointment. Picture and audio were fantastic, except the system had a heat sink problem. The system would start skipping after one hour of play time (regardless of the movie). It would also lock up.

Mobshop shipped me another system after a week or two. I returned the defective unit at no cost.

The second system has played extremely well for the past 4 months. I have seen a few "disk errors" occasionally when starting a movie. I think it depends on how the system was turned off previously.

For example: One time I left the movie on pause while answering a phone, and the system timed out. When restarting the movie, the laser had trouble reinitiallizing at the beginning. I don't see it as a chonic problem, but I would expect a little more from Toshiba (you shouldn't have to recycle power just to recognize a DVD).

If I had to do it all over again, I probably would have gotten a panasonic or sony from start. But if this thing continues to hold up without any many further problems, then I will be very satisfied. As for now, I can only give it 4 stars.

Strength:

Easy to setup and use. Great picture. Good product (so far) for price paid.

Weakness:

A little noisy and slow when accessing menus. Does not play CD-R. Remote does NOT light up.

I purchased this unit as a Christmas gift for a friend and I just couldn't wait to give it to her. This is her first DVD player and I thought the Toshiba SD-1200 would make a good entry level DVD player to introduce her to the DVD technology.

She does not have a full-blown 5.1 home theater setup, so I haven't heard the Dolgy Digital 5.1 or DTS capability of this machine.

It was very easy to hookup and get working. So far, the unit has been great and she loves the crisp picture! We'll see what happens as time goes on.

I found the unit to be a little noisy and slow when accessing menus. Even my fried would verbally "coax" the machine into loading faster.

So far, so good. The machine has been in operation for about 3 days so it's way to early to tell.

Purchased the SD 1200 several weeks ago. The first thing I tried was playing a rented copy of Matrix since I had heard that many people had problems with this movie. The Toshiba played flawlessley. I have now played several movies and have never had a problem. The sound is excellent and the features are unparralleled at this price.

I specifically wanted a player with S-video, composite and component output and the SD1200 has all three. It will also playback 5:1, DTS, video CD and music CDs.

Strength:

Excellent audio and video playback. Great zoom features.
This is the definitive DVD player for moderately priced HT systems.

Weakness:

Just the remote, like almost all others, too small, goofy
buttons.

What a great product. Friends of mine have DVD players
that cost much more that dont have zoom, dts out and other
features and this little puppy has em all for just over $200.

Watched about 25 DVD's so far, not one screwed up or showed
any signs of trouble. Dual layer disks pause for a split-second when changing layers but this is typical (they even print that on most DVD boxes).

Couldnt believe the fastforward and zoom capabilities, works
perfectly.

If you dont need a disk changer or a built in decoder for DD or DTS then this unit is a perfect player for anyone getting into HT and even those who have advanced HT systems
which do DTS/DD decode on the receiver end.

Strength:

Picture; Control of Rew/Fwd Skip etc; Zoom

Weakness:

CD Audio playback

I bought this unit as my HT DVD player and also because I have a ToshRPTV with colorstream (compnt inputs). The picture is beautiful! Tarzan was razor sharp! The search/chpt skip-seek/FFwd/Zoom functions perform much more quickly than other players I have seen, not as much lag waiting for the drive to perform. However, using just the digital coax out audio cds are way too bright. Compared to my TEAC 5-cd carousel, cd-audio lacks soundstage 'depth'. I tried compensating for this on the amp, but I honestly haven't tried the analog sound-outs. It would seem redundant to do that, though. Anyway, buy it for the movies but don't scrap your CD player yet.

Strength:

Picture quality, fast forward 2x, 8x, 30x, zoom -- Overall a great VALUE

Weakness:

Remote buttons are small

By far the best value for a DVD player.

I had a Pioneer 525, but I hated the fast forward function because it was too choppy and slow. Picture quality was good and so was sound.

I purchased the the APEX A600 but that was junk. There was a lot of artifacting in the Matrix. It wouldn't play the Abyss without repeating scenes. I took it back.

I purchased the Toshiba 1200. What a sight for soar eyes. Crystal clean picture and sound. Purchased it from www.mobshop.com for $160 + $10 tax = $170.

Definetly the biggest bang for the buck.

Strength:

good picture, ease of use, great sound

Weakness:

remote

Bought the SD1200 for $216 out the door at a local dealer and never looked back. Had it hooked up in 10 minutes and was watching the Matrix. This unit is easy to use, very quiet. On-screen menu is intuitive and easy to operate. The remote buttons are small but once I press "play" the remote sits on the end table for the rest of the movie so who cares. Have not had one problem with this unit at all. I would buy it again in a minute! To all the people whining about the remote and the drawer being cheap I must remind them it's a $200 unit not a $500 unit. For the money you can't beat it. Component video outputs, zoom, multi angle. I especially like the zoom feature for watching widescreen movies on a 4:3 tv. By zooming the picture a little you can minimize the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. This has the effect of providing a bigger viewing area so you don't get that feeling your peeking between the shades. Highly recommended for an entry level unit without bells and whistles. I give it a 5 overall only because there are better units available but not at this price.
