Weakness:

Doesn't play dual layered disks at all. "Disk Error"

The Toshiba SD1200 does not play dual layered disks (they are gold colored), so beware. I was told that it needs a firm ware upgrade and that you had to ship it at your own expense to Vancouver because they couldn't fix it
anywhere else. They'd fix in a week or two then send it back. They're not very helpful.

Strength:

Great Picture; Tons of features; 24/96 Audio

Weakness:

Can't support CD-R, CD-RW, MP3

Setup and Manual are easy to follow. Got this unit as a Door-Crasher Sale(so I got 2--hehehe). Use the other one a a CD Player in separate system.

Sound is distinctly better and cleaner than older Sony CD Player. For Movies, Phenomenal.

Strength:

Easy to use

Weakness:

No Playback CDR CD-RW No MP3 Support

The Toshiba SD-1200 is a very easy unit to use, I have not had any problems with it but have only played around 30 DVD’s to date.
On reflection I should have purchased a unit that would play CDR’s and MP3’s.
This unit was sold Region free / Modified for an extra $50 Aust but still has Macrovision switched on, I would like to here from any one who could help me switch this off. I think the Mod will be a code entered into the remote.

In previous reviews there seems the unit is not lasting longer than 6 months or 50-60 DVD’s – could be the 5 years Warranty I paid for will be utilised, only time will tell.

Previously I used a Pioneer PC DVD Player with a Hollywood plus hardware decoder, this unit is still being used in the Ham Shack but was clumsy for any one else to use. When the unit was first installed I had an overheating problem while playing a Matrix DVD since then this DVD will not play in any PC based units, I’m please to say the Toshiba SD-1200 Plays this DVD with out a flaw.

Last but not final comment on the unit, Mine has an Optical output, this may have been something required for Australia or simply a Mid Model change in any case I can’t utilise this yet but hope to be updating my surround system soon – any clues on what to buy.

Peter.

Strength:

Component Out, Low Cost

Weakness:

Remote, Menu Navigation Speed, Perceived poor build quality

When I first got the player from mobshop.com, I was pretty pleased with it. The unit looked good and played every movie that I encountered.

I thought that the remote had a low-budget feel to it... I had to leave the "beep when you press a button" feature enabled, because otherwise I could not tell when a keypress went through.

After about 4 months of owning it, I encountered a disk that would give the unit fits. It was a rented disk, so I attributed the problems to the media.

Later, I found the number of problems that the player was having reading discs to be increasing at an alarming rate. Within a two-month span, the player went from playing every disc fine to not being able to load a single one. I got several new discs for christmas, and none of them work in the player now. If I insert the disc into the player, it just says "loading" on the screen/player and never does anything else.

I contacted Toshiba about this after hearing on this forum that I was not the only one to experience this defect. I was hopeing that they'd say "oh yeah, that model had an issue when they first came out". Instead, they told me that there were no known problems with the unit and that I'd have to take it to a repair facility.

So, I'm completely bummed out about my Toshiba SD-1200. I've yet to take it in for service, mostly because I'm dreading having to pay the quoted "$50 just to look at it" for a piece of crap unit that only cost me 3 times that to buy new.

It sounds from other reviews I've read here that this "player goes bye-bye after 4-6 months of use" is a problem that you either have or don't have. That's why most of the reviews here are either 1-star or 4-stars.

If anyone reading this has some valuable insight on this problem I'd like to hear about it.

Strength:

good picture quality,good sound quality

Weakness:

way too noisy

generally speaking, the sd1200 is a decent unit for the money, the picture and sound quality are quite good for a budget player.in my eagerness to buy a dvd player,i did not invest the same amount of time researching similar products as i did for the rest of my home theatre gear.while i am ,for the most part, satisfied,i really hate the noise generated by this player.in the rare istance that i must watch a movie at low volume,i hear the toshiba whirring awayin the background.also, there is a very annoying cliciking noise on some compact discs.a friend who has a sony dvd player has no such problems.while the toshiba is by no means alousy unit, you can do better with your money.mine will soon passed down to a family member to be replaced by a higher end sony.I have subsequently spent time looking at various dvd players and am leaning towards purchasing a mid level sony.

Very good dvd player. This was my first dvd product. I recommend it for a first dvd player, or just one to pick up. It was very good for the price I payed. The Toshiba SD1200 is a good addition to the dvd player family!!!

Strength:

Picture, Processes multilayered discs flawlessly

Weakness:

Lack of HDCd and CDR support. Remote in the dark

All I can say is WOW. This is my first ever DVD player and I'm very impressed with its performance. I basically used the reviews on this site to make my final decision and I wasn't mislead. For its low price and compared to similarly priced models, the Toshiba clearly has the upper hand as far as functions and picture quality goes. Also, this player was a perfect fit for me because I already have a Sony STR-DE845 receiver which processes both Dolby Digital and DTS for me, so there was no point in me paying more money for one with a decoder built in. The first movie that I watched was The Matrix of course. The DD effect was phenomenal. I was also very pleased with the "enhanced black" and zooming feature, which is necesary for me since I have a small 27" tv. Last but not least, the remote is great as long as the light is on, otherwise you don't know what you are pushing. Overall, this player is the perfect fit for those who already have a DD and DTS decoder, and rates as a 5 Star in my book.

Strength:

Excellent picture overall and good definition during dark scenes.

Weakness:

None

I have been comparing the performance of both the Pioneer DV-525 and the Toshiba SD-1200 for 3 days. The monitor used is a Panasonic 32SF35 which has 2 S-Video inputs allowing immediate comparison of picture quality. Both units exhibit very good pictures overall with very few artifacts due to downconversion etc. However, the Pioneer's picture is slightly darker than the Toshiba's reducing detail in dark or shadowy area's. This is particularly noticeable in remastered movies such as American Graffiti where 90% of the movie takes place at night. I also found the Poineer's settings for black level, Cinema, Standard, Animation to be ineffective, producing very little change in the picture. Adjusting the TV's brightness control helped a bit, but the Toshiba still produced more detail in dark scenes. I plan to keep the Toshiba.
