    Strength:

Progressive scan output sacd sound looks and build, its built like a tank

    Weakness:

no cdr playback remote stinks no power button on front panel of unit just a hard switch

The picture quality and sound is fantastic. I have trudged my way through many dvd players but i decided to go with the sony. using the progressive output on my isf calibrated 36xbr450 is amazing! The only downside is the remote butons not always working and its non-ability to play cdr's. I was wondering if anyone had any info on any firmware updates or software updates so that the 9000es will play cdr's? Let me know guys thanks

    Strength:

    build quality, looks

    Weakness:

doesn't play most burned cdrs, no balanced connections, no headphone jack

I have since purchased a krell kav-300cd as my main cdp. The 9000es is exceptional for music and movies. Use Audio Direct function for better sound w/ analog connection. In it's price range, it pretty much blows the competition out of the water. Great bargain if you can find a used one.

    Strength:

    Build,sound,appearance,features.

    Weakness:

    Forget about it.

My sixth-sense for bargains allowed me to come across this store shelf unit with full warranty at closeout discount- pricing of only $700. My interest is old-fashioned stereo music-playback and I was not disappointed in the least to know I would be limiting my problems to only two channels. I listen via my beloved Grado SR-325 headphones or B+W speakers fed by my Onkyo-Integra preamp and N.E.W. A-20.1 amp tied together by Mapleshade's Clearview interconnects and Audioquest speaker cables. So,in all ways it is for me a score. Very little can still be left to the imagination regarding the overall bodaciousness of this player after all of the positive reviews on record both here and there and everywhere. Let me simply underscore the fact that owning this unit will put anyone very, very close to the pinnacle of media playback at relatively low cost, and the build-quality is superb proof that a lot of care went into this effort. The overall sweetness and resolution of my little system can now rival the burnished effusions of many a royal court.

    Strength:

Outstanding video and sound SACD discs sound phenominal Built like a brick. Excellent resisitance to resonance

    Weakness:

Regular CD playback better using my recievers 96/24 bit converter disc Drive makes ticking sound FL Display fuzzy and of low quality Remote requires hard and long push of buttons to work

I was waiting for the replacement model coming out soon but could not wait until the late summer/ fall. And I think at the price I paid, it''s an excellent value. You do have to break this thing in to realize its full sound potential.

    Strength:

Simply the best video playback I have seen from a dvd player. Only an hdtv source tops this one.

    Weakness:

Does not play back cds authored on pcs no mp3 or dvd+r dvd-r playback. NO DVD Audio playback! Super Audio CDs playback is supported but it is a much lesser resolution medium. With each Sony product, I am reminded of the fact that they also own alot of "software" - movies and music so they are not trying to come out with the product that will play the latest popular formats.

The best dvd playback I have seen and very good sound. Does not play any type of writeable media - cds or dvds. No mp3 either.

    Weakness:

Muddy sound Small buttons Doesn''t play cd-r''s

Sony makes a good product. I was very pleased with this cd/dvd player until I listened to a Meridian cd/dvd player. When I did an A B comparision I heard how muddy the Sony was.

    Strength:

Good built. Nice sound. Feel you are watching movies in cinema.

    Weakness:

Only can playback two channel SACD A little bit higher price

A valuable DVD player, especially for those who like enjoying good music and watch movies, but would not like buy too machines at home. Very nice sound field and depth for playing back SACD, also, if you use it as a regular CD player, you will not consider to buy one more CD player, even it is just a DVD player. Connect with Barco Cine projector.

    Strength:

sound video appearance (the big blue light...)

    Weakness:

    annoying "pop" from the player

I won''t get into any of the issues previous reviewers have covered - suffice it to say that I''m quite satisfied with the audio playback (haven''t listened to any SACDs yet, though...) as well as the DVD playback. I am concerned, however, with an annoying "click" or "pop" that comes from the unit every 30 - 45 minutes or so, whether or not a disc is spinning or the unit is just on an in "idle." I cannot imagine what it is other than perhaps the metal chassis expanding or something similar, and heat-related. The unit does NOT feel overly warm to the touch. I''ve tried leaving the unit on for several days straight, thinking that the temperature will equalize and the clicking might stop - to no avail. Has anyone heard of this before? I don''t believe it''s affecting the playback capabilities, but the noise can be heard accross the room during the quieter passages - and it''s damned annoying. No reason to expect this from a player in this (or any other, really) price category. Please e-mail me if you have any insight on this. Thanks

    Strength:

    Excellent sound!

    Weakness:

    None to me.

This DVD player has surprised me in more ways than one. Prior to this, I was using a Toshiba 3750, whose purchase was influenced from reviews on this site. Needless to say, I was very happy with my Toshiba...but after reading good things about the audio quality of this DVD player, I just had to give it a try. The first thing I noticed was definitely the sound. It''s has more warmth and depth to it than the Toshiba -- a lot more, I should say. I picked up a few SACDs and tried them out. Boy, they are quite a leap over regular CDs IMO. I don''t know if it is my imagination or if the sound is actually THAT much better, but I trust my ears and I like what I hear...and that''s good enough for me. The video quality is exceptional, I have no disappointments here. The Toshiba already had excellent video, so I''m not noticing any difference worth noting. All in all I am very pleased with my purchase. One thing I highly recommend is getting a set of high quality cables. I always used to skimp on cables as they never had much priority, but after looking around the net bit, I stumbled across avic cables at www.holomaxx.com. They sell really high quality cables that don''t cost that much more than regular cables. I picked up their component video and coaxial digital audio to connect my toshiba and they was a noticeable improvement in sound and video quality. I''m not the kind of person that obsesses over video and sound, looking for minute details and imagining stuff that''s not there, but after using these avic cables I definitely would not go back to the acoustic research cables I was using. Don''t skimp on cables!

    Strength:

Great SACD quality. Great picture quality.

    Weakness:

I have not found one yet.

I have been looking at this piece for awhile now. When the price was lowered to $750 I just had to move on this piece. It has excellent picture quality and the SACD is superb. The SACD plays in 2 channel mode. I hear Sony is coming out with the SACD in 5.1 mode but again for the price this unit was a steal.
