Strength:

Remote, Sharp Picture, Slow-Motion/ Still Effects, Video EQ

Weakness:

No Zoom

I got this player for Christmas and have loved it! I'm not sure of the firmware version, but I haven't had any lip-sync problems. I noticed very slight pauses at layer changes in Enemy Of The State, American Pie, and Saving Private Ryan. The Slow-Motion and Pause effects are incredible. The Jog/ Shuttle ring on the remote is great, though it does take some getting used to. I also like the fact that it can control the volume on my Sony Reciever. The Video EQ is great also. I don't have to switch the settings on my TV when I switch back to my VCR. The unit has inputs and outputs galore and S-Control (which is very convenient) if you have a Sony receiver. DTS capability is a nice feature too. My only real complaint is that it doesn't have a zoom feature. I have noticed, as did a review below, that it does have difficulty reading scratched discs.

Overall, I think this is a great product and I highly recommend it. Just make sure you get the latest firmware version! It's a great value if you can get it for under $400.

Strength:

Great Player, DTS, Price

Weakness:

Shuttle

Well to I purchased this player at Best Buy which is the first problem. Never by anything from there. Get it online. The second problem I had was the shuttle on the remote. Not the best thing in the world but it works well. I have had this for several months now and I love it. I would never want to go back to VHS. The remote isnt back lit, but it does have glow in the dark buttons. Buy it if you can find it for less then $450. There isnt really anything more you need in a DVD player.

Strength:

Picture quality, sound quality. Options, S link compatible is a great feature.

Weakness:

All features can not be remotely controlled by other Sony controllers, for instance, the display button can not be accessed. Price is high.

Looks great, sounds great. Looking for a remote for our Player. Can you please help?

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound, great connections

Weakness:

Can't get me a beer from the fridge

I've got this baby hooked up using Component Video to my 32" Sony Wega and doing 5.1 through my Sony 835 receiver and Polk Audio Home theatre speaker set.

The picture is incredible using S-Video which I originally used until I bought the Component video cable, but even better with component. It sounds great, though in my opinion sound is more a function of the receiver and speakers. I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever though I was worried about the lip-synch problem that was reported with earlier versions of this model. I can highly recommend this machine.

I guess I'm one of the lucky one's so far. I bought my
unit in Feb of 2000, SN# 906015, and so far, have only
been impressed with it. The video is great and the
sound, as played using its internal dolby digital decoder,
is fabulous.
I had looked at several lower priced units and when my
fiancee and I auditioned this unit we decided to spend
the extra money for it. So far, We have not been disappointed.
For whoever is interested, while looking at the "budget"
DVD's, video-wise, the panasonics we looked at seemed the
worst while the Toshiba's the best. Did not look at Sony
330 as we had at that point decided we wanted onboard
Dolby Digital decoder, so I don't have an opinion on that unit.

Strength:

Just about everything you would want. The
Exceptions being.....

Weakness:

.....Lip Sync BS and NO ZOOM.

I encountered the lip sync problem after
eleven month of use. I called Sony and they
picked up the player Fed Ex at their
expense. As it should be. I just put in the
main problematic dvd movies. They are: The
Good, The Bad and The Ugly and All Quiet On
The Western Front. And a few other titles.
Guess what, no difference. The lip sync
problem is still there, it actually seems
worse. Now, I have to see about getting a
brand new player. Very typical of Sony
products. This coupled with the thousand
problems I continue to have with my Sony
Wega 36XBR200 tv, I recommend to everyone,
NEVER BUY ANYTHING WITH THE SONY NAME ON
IT. IT'S CRAP!!!!

Strength:

Clear picture and sound. Great remote. Built in Digital Decoder.

Weakness:

Connections are not gold plated.

I like the performace of this machine...since getting the '99 chip replaced with the 2000 chip. All of you people out there with lipsync problems, this is your fix. It is a free fix because it is a recall item...they know that they don't work properly. Since the chip, great machine although a HDCD decoder wouldn't have killed them!

Strength:

Excellent picture/ sound quality, more features that you will ever need, quick startup, jog/shuttle dials on remote & unit

Weakness:

time display defaults to elapsed chapter time instead of elapssed total time.

Easily the best DVD player I have ever seen (and the Proscan was a great machine). Picture and sound quality is top-notch with tons of connections available. The scanning and slow-mo is the best I've ever seen. Almost smoother than CAV laserdiscs! No problems with lip-synch (mine is only 5 months old). The features are unbelievable and almost too many to list: auto audio track selection, picture/DNR/bookmark/title memory for 200 discs, auto aspect ratio selection, picture adjustment, strobe feature, title/chapter preview screens, bitrate/layer display, dual jog/shuttles, picture display memory and tons more. Almost everything is adjustable! A tweakers dream. I can only imagine with the 7700 must be like!

Strength:

Weakness:

jog on remote does not work well, product only lasted nine months

I was quite pleased with the product until the screen started freezing up after only ten minutes of play. This happened after only using the product for about nine months and we played no more than fifty discs. When we took it to see what it would cost to fix the service person told us that we would be better off buying a new one. A $600 product going bust in only nine months?! Ridiculous. What is more ridiculous is that Sony could care less about our problem. They refuse to do a single thing about it. This is definitely the last Sony product we will buy do to their lack of interest in our happiness.
