Incredible player. Got mine on-line at Crutchfield (for $382). NO Lip sync problems (even on Matrix). Good remote. Easy to Use. Smooth FF and REW. Clear pause function. Picture quality is excellent. Sound Quality is excellent. Plenty of features, plenty of outputs. More features than most players. Overall an excellent player.

Lipsync in early firmware versions?

I am very happy with the performance of the 550D. The two main reasons for my purchase were. (component vidio out), which allowed me to take advantage of the (component vidio in) on my TV. And the 24bit96mhtz digital anolog chips, which allows me take advantage of the newer 96mhtz CD,s. My reciever has 48mhtz dac,s so this gives me this capibility without updating my reciever.
The information given by other reviewers on how to check firmware version was very usefull in helping me to avoid the lipsync problem others have experienced.

One of the previous reviewers had called Sony and was told that any 550D or 530D made after September 1999 would not have the lip sync problem and the date of manufacture could be found on the back of the unit. I went to several stores and checked the back of the units and none of them had a date on them. I went to a reputable Hi-Fi shop in the area who sold the units and their display models didn't even have the date. How can this be verified? Is Sony lying to everyone?

Well pleased with the 550D. This being my first DVD player it is good to have a positive experience.

Have experienced the lip-sync problem that I have read about but only on one movie (Apocolypse Now) and only once on this title. No occurences on any other disc.

Have enjoyed this unit so far. Like the Optical connection for hooking up to my Sony STR-DE935. A good combination for someone entering into the new audio/video technology.

Great picture and sound

No Zoom. Enter key feels like crap.

Got my first player from BrandsMart and took it home excited. Noticed lip sync problem during Enemy of the State, and severe loss of audio on Eyes Wide Shut. Checke dthe serial no and found it to start with 089. Returned to BrandsMart and requested serial no starting with 93 or higher. They informed me there would be no guarantee that I would get such a unit, depends on warehouse. Got a full refund, walked across the street and purchased from Circuit City for $10 less ($343). Serial number 0937575 and firmware 2.6. Player shows great, no problems, sound is awesome. Just notice a slight pause when movies shift from layer 0 to layer 1 (but most movies I've watched do this change at the end of a chapter).

This is my second unit. The first had the lip sync. problem. Finally I played a bad DVD and I thought it was the DVD player so I returned it. Good Guys exchanged it for a new one 3 months after I took the original one home. My new unit has the 2.4 version and so far no problems.

If I could do it over again I would not buy the Sony!

When I purchased this unit I wanted reliability.. and it seems that is what I got.

I have rocommended this unit to a friend, and that is a testament in itself.

I would rate this unit a 4.5, .5 because I have no idea of what a 5 rated DVD player is.
