For the price, outstanding picture clarity and audio using high grade optical and S cables. I have not experienced the lip sync problem, so I assume I have the upgraded firmware. For me, the remote unit's "wheel" selector is a little sloppy when navigating DVD movie menus but it's a minor issue. Terrific unit.

Strength:

Sound, Video, Digital outputs

Weakness:

no A-B repeat button on remote... must use menus

I have my 550D Hooked up to a Sony STRB830D Reciever through Coaxial Digital connections. All I can say is Sssssweet. DTS and Dolby Digital are both Great. My 27" Magnavox MX TV Was not up to par on the pluge tests on "Video Essentials" DVD It was not capable of producing the blacker than black bar...until I turned on the Video EQ on the player It gave my TV that little extra boost it needed. Buy this one.

Strength:

Sound and picture quality. Large lighted remote you can use in the dark.

Weakness:

None Noticed

I returned my DVD S530D due to lip sync problems after using it for 3 1/2 months to Hi-Fi Buys. I have watched 10 movies since then and have seen no evidence of a lip sync problem. Honestly, I see very little difference in this unit and the S530D. It has a great picture and very good sound. The only reason I got this player was because Hi-Fi buys gave me a free upgrade. Total cost $329.. Great bang for the BUCK! If there is a big difference in price, I would buy the S530D.

Strength:

good picture, sound

Weakness:

none found yet, save cost...

Family member purchased 500 a year ago. Worked extremely well, no sync problems or anything. So I researched and purchased 550d. Very good picture/sound. I like the remote jog controls, but if that isn't important to you I'd suggest going with the cheaper model. If you don't want to go mail order, bring your online quotes from an authorized sony dealer (if there are any) to local stores. sometimes they match...
Very simple to set up, manual has the info in it, but is at times hard to find what you're looking for. I like the fact that you can dim/turn off the front display on the unit. lets you get rid of extra light in the room. Thanks for the serial Numbers and everything... It's way too pricy retail, so get a good deal.

Have been researching for a while to buy myself a reliable DVD player and now have set sights on this SONY player...In case, someone else is doing the same research on this product and has decided to buy this sony DVD, i would suggest sbhcorp.com and pcmall.com..These players cost less than $400 at these sites (plus S&H)..

Be sure to check the firmware version though, to avoid lip synch problem.

I got this unit back in June 1999 and did not have a problem using digital output until 2 months ago. (I heard analog out is ok) Terrible lip sync problem with movies like "The Siege", "Shes all that" and there's freeze up with "Enemy of the State" and skipping problem on "Something about Mary". Watch at least 50+ movies, at least 8 popular titles have problems with the Sony DVD.
Called Sony and the CS Rep. even the Manager named Bob I spoke with is so rude I wasn't even sure I was talking to customer service. I requested for a replacement unit or at least a loaner while the unit is being repaired since I didn't want to be out for months without a player which is what I heard
from this site regarding the delay from the service center and manager replied in an insulting voice on can how he can't help me.
I rate -1 for service and 1 for lip sync, freeze up and skipping problems and plus one for an otherwise acceptable video and audio.
Sony is known to have certain batch of the same model to be bad and certain batch to be good, I don't won't be praying and hoping to get the good batch while paying a Sony price and
will be looking for a Panasonic instead.

Have used this product for several weeks and have watched 20+ DVD's including two with DTS sound. Unit has tremendous video quality especially when using component video transfer. I have noticed no lip synch problems with any of the DVD's I have watched. The 550D is interfacing with a Sony 50ES and a 32" Sony Wega TV. Top notch unit . . .
