Strength:

Brand name

Weakness:

Lasted only 1 1/2 years before dying

Lasted about 1 1/2 years, then no disc errors regardles of whether I played a DVD or Cd. Unfortunatly, I bought another Sony, only to have it die with the same no disc errors. Called SOny, and they stated they had no known issues with their dvd plyers dying. Beware. I won't be buying another Sony DVD player.

Strength:

Ease of use and overall quality.

Weakness:

none

I have had the Sony 530d model for 3 years now and have encounted my first problem which was very minor. The value in the Sony far excedes any other DVD player I could find for the money. The operation is smooth and the on screen programming is very clear.

Strength:

Picture quality

Weakness:

Will NOT play CD-R discs!

I bought this player and the "reference" DVP-S7700 player at the same time and was disgusted to find the DVP-S530D will not play CD-R discs while the S7700 will. Must be the dual lasers on the S7700..If you don't care about playing cd's that you make yourself, I recommend this unit.

Strength:

excellent picture and sound. Easy to use controls

Weakness:

Cannot play CDR's!! also has lip sync problems, but all SONY models have lip synch problems, better than pioneer models which cant play some movies at all!

I found this player to be amazing, i'm very happy with the overall quality, although the inablility to play CDR's hurts it really bad for me, i own over 160 CDR's filled with live music from various bands. Anyway, its an excellent DVD player, and besides the lip synch problems (lips move than vocals come out), thats the problem i really had with it.

Strength:

One of the few DVD players which plays DVDs from
BlockBuster.

Plays many DVD formats.
Many types of I/O (s-video, 5.1, digital etc..) provisions.

Weakness:

Doesnt play CD-Rs.
Above normal disk spinning noise.

Crisp and clear picture, Cool remote, on-screen setup menu, decoding of various formats of DVDs, Dolby Pro-Logic, Dolby Digital, DTS, 5.1 output/Co-ax/Optical outputs, S-video, light, Virtual enhanced surround sound amongst other good features makes it one of the best DVD players available in the market.

My cousin got a JVC and it doesnt play movies from BlockBuster. Sony plays them.

I got it from ABT Electronics, Morton Grove, Illinois, USA. I got it for $279 from Bill Zidek (cool salesman - explains all details you need to know about DVD players). The package included 7 free DVDs and 10 free DVD rentals.

No lip sync problems. I had it too and found out that it is matter of playing better DVDs and most importantly - setting up the SPEAKER distances properly in your Reciever.

Only default settings that were not good to Plug-N-Play were the Digital out was set to PCM and had to be set to Digital Dolby and DTS was turned off and had to turn it on. They made it this way to not spoil your ears and speakers at connection time (if you have your speakers on).

To summarize it all, this is one of the best DVD players one can get for under $300.

For savvys - I have:
DVD Player:
Sony DVPS 530 (Digital Co-ax/S-video to receiver)
$279
Receiver:
Sony STRDE 845 (100x5 with all I/O one could think of)
$317
Speakers:
Mirage FRX series with FRXs8 sub woofer (100x5)
==============
Total cost (with wires and 5% cash back from discover card):
$1890

Wires make a big difference people. Good wires have less
noise and no distortion. Get audio quest for speakers, Jade
for sub woofer, co-ax/optical for digital DVD-to-receiver
and s-video for video.. You definitely need a 27" TV minimum.

Remember not to whine or blame any of these components until 100 hours of viewing to allow these to break-in.

Strength:

This is an inexpensive yet top-of-the-line DVD player that works very well, with DTS and DD support. Outstanding.

Weakness:

Doesn't have the useless gimmicks that some people like, instead focusing on reliability and ease of use.

This is a great DVD player, especially if you're not interested in a noisy, oversized, heavy 5-disc DVD changer that is much more likely to have problems down the road. I wouldn't buy a DVD player not manufactured by Sony. I recommend the 530 over the 550 as the 550 adds very little functionality for a much higher price.

Strength:

Price value and Top of the line. Outstanding.

Weakness:

None noted as yet

Over all I looked for a few months and the soney 530 was the best value for the $. The remote could have been better
but not as bad as others in this DVD player class. The player is so good that I up-graded my receiver so I can enjoy Dolby digitl now it brings out all the best of my DVD.
Price is somthing you should keep an eye out for Best Buy &
Circuit City were bowth over priced at x-mas time. In South Florida we have a store called "BrandsMart USA" who was $50to$75 us dollars cheeper on the sony 530 so look around
town and check prices. I love this player and you will to
if you buy it.

Strength:

Very good Video and Audio quality, espicially the DD decoder.

Weakness:

So-called universal remote doesn't work with my TV or Receiver

This product produces very good quality Audio and Video. The Dolby Digital Decoder is extremely good, and really makes DVD worth the price. I have only seen the lip sync issue once, and it was easily fixed with a pause and play. This player has many small features that people might overlook. If you take the time and go through all the settings it definately makes a difference. I would recommend this player to anyone who is looking for a good quality player at a reasonable price.
