Strength:

Nice film like quality to the picture. Good remote. Every output you could want. Slim and affordable.

Weakness:

Too noisy. The noisiest DVD player I have ever heard. No CD-r support.

The Sony is loaded with great features. DVD, CD, and Video CD support. Every output you will ever need. It has a great picture and the sound is very good. The big problem with the player is the noisy transport. It clicks and whirs so loud that it actually starts to ruin the movie. When scenes are quiet all you can hear is "whir whir click whir click". I got rid of it because of this. It is too bad Sony had to cut back on the quality they put into their early DVD players. For the price it may be worth the headaches, but not for me.

Strength:

Price, slim attractive package, good remote, excellent manual, lots of inputs/outputs.

Weakness:

No Dolby Digital/DTS decoder.

I was looking at other units about $50 cheaper but they didn't have anywhere near the number of outputs this thing has (no optical or s-video). I planned on replacing my old pro-logic receiver with a DD/DTS one anyway so not having a DD/DTS decoder on this unit was not a problem. (I did replace my receiver-just got a new HK AVR 500).

Anyway, back to the Sony, this is my first DVD player so I really have nothing to compare it to. I can tell you that for ease of use and setup, this is a really nice unit. Sound quality of CDs and DVDs is excellent.

Here is my system:

Harmon Kardon AVR 500
Klipsch KG 2.5 fronts
Klipsch SC 1 center
Klipsch KSW 10 subwoofer
Klipsch KSB 1.1 rears
Sony DVP-S360

Love this setup! Really nice audio sound and great AV.

Strength:

Well planned out remote....good quality and appearance..all required connectors..decent price

Weakness:

no cd-r compatibility

Yes as others have said it is a bit loud but that shouldnt deter you....it's priced competively is easy to use ...has decent picture and excellent sound quality........I was pleased to see every connection that I could want on the unit but unfortunately cd-r playback is not possible....but I knew this anyway......wasnt a big deal because I have my pc connected to my receiver.....The remote is well laid out compared to some similiar priced models(the phillips and rca remotes suck (!) ....I havent noticed any skipping or picture distortion yet and havent had problems playing any movies at all....An overall great machine for the price.....( And yes Im sure I spelled something wrong :-)RCA

Strength:

gets the job done, looks good standing by the big brother 777es receiver.

Weakness:

noisy, burns a hole in your ears when playing cds

First I should say I don't know dick about dvd players, so
as far as I can tell this thing gets the job done.
My complaints, that may be obvious to everyone are
1) the noise produced when playing DVDs particularly when the thing starts to read DD material. Basically is like the digital version of what you hear when you put you ear close to a cartridge reading vinyl, just much louder. I thought optical systems didn't work that way!!
2)the fact that it goes directly in standby when you hit the ON button.
3) Harsh sound!!!!Initially I thought that reproduction was much more clear and defined with the 360 than with my old CD player, and it was. Too bad I can 't listen to it for more than two minutes after which my ears feel like if I spent the night at the bar standing ten feet from the speakers while the local band is playing live. I can't put my finger on it but there is some component of harshness and distortion in the whole treble band that simply I can't physically tolerate even at very low volumes. When I play DVD's things seem to be not as noticeable and painful.
My old and cheap Yamaha CDX-470 is far from great but at least I can listen to a whole cd no problem, and Yamahas are NOT famous for their warm sound.
All in all it's a three stars, $200 don't buy much these days.

Strength:

Good value, good picture

Weakness:

A little too much edge ringing

See also my review for Sony DVP-C670D. I made some good comparison.

Overall, this unit offers great color production that is not found in players in this price range. Picture are tack sharp and smooth. As I mentioned, it produces a little too much ringing (a hallow gap around edges) that becomes visible in big screen TVs. Otherwise, a fantastic bargain player.

Strength:

Hasn't choked on a DVD so far, great remote, nice menus

Weakness:

Nothing so far

Bought this unit as a replacement for the Panasonic A110, which died on me (don't buy Panasonics--see Panasonic A110 and A310 reviews for details).

Bought this player after reading the reviews on this site. I first bought the Toshiba SD-1200, which was generally a good player, except that it had problems with certain DVDs. It couldn't play the multi-angled pseudopod scene in The Abyss, and it didn't decode Chapter 5 of Alien very well at all--there are a lot of parallel curved lines in that scene which seem to ripple when the camera pans. Also, in Mansfield Park, the player seems to get stuck for about a second during one of the scene transitions (perhaps it was the layer change, but it wasn't just a slight pause--the player seemed to repeat a brief segment several times).

I returned the Toshiba to Tweeter after testing it for four weeks (they have a 30-day money back guarantee) and got the Sony DVP-S360. It was able to play all of the DVDs mentioned above with no problems. I haven't had any problems with any DVDs so far.

Someone below mentioned that the Sony player has a problem with True Lies--in a scene near the beginning where Tom Arnold is sitting in the van looking through a pair of binoculars, you can see a horizontal line across the screen through his mouth when he speaks. Well, the Toshiba had the same problem, so I think it may be a problem with that specific DVD.

I didn't mind the Panasonic and Toshiba remotes, but after I got the Sony player, I realized why everyone thinks those remotes are so bad. The Sony remote is much better designed--different sized buttons and a better layout.

I'd recommend the Sony player to anyone.

Strength:

Very fast seek time, very clear picture, plays dual layer dvds great.

Weakness:

Seems a bit loud.

I really like this dvd player, it jumps around menus, jumps through chapters etc very fast. It has a great remote that I allready know my way around in the dark, and it has every possible output you will need. My only complaint is it seems to be a little loud throughout the movie. It is always scanning the disc and it distracts me if I am bored with the movie or it is in a quiet part. Im not sure if every DVD player is like this or not, I never noticed it on my friends crappy Apex player. Highly recommended to anyone though.

Strength:

Sleek look; excellent remote; fast loading; good, clear, well saturated picture - a bit soft, but that's how I like it; ease of operation

Weakness:

Non-defeatable autostart, not the greatest on CD's, but passable; minor quibble - no dimmer on unit.

I am very pleased with this player for DVD's. CD's are passable, but not as good as a dedicated CD player or the ones with dual-lasers. But, I bought it for a DVD player only.

It has all the outputs you need and they are good and strong. I only notice the sound of the player during disk access when I am about one to two feet from the player - never when listening at my prime position of 8 feet. DD and DTS sound is excellent when played through both a Denon 1801 or Sony 333ES.

I've tried all of the so-called problem disks and have not found one that can trip up the 360. I like the ability to STOP at any point in the movie and restart again at the same point. Chapter skipping is very quick. Menus are great.

Picture quality is excellent, but then I took the time to set up the TV with an A/V setup disk, which makes a big difference.

In summary, I like the nice, low profile design, flawless playback and ergonomic remote. A player well worth taking a look at!!!

Strength:

Very good product

Weakness:

yet to find

I think this product is cost effective, performs well, and doesn't break like other dvd players like samsung etc. The remote is very good. This player provides two sets of audio/video outputs. It is very easy to use and setup. I think that the picture is great and if you find that it is too soft, a minor tweaking of the TV corrects the problem.

In one line I would say that it will definitely pass your criteria of price, performance, and quality.
