Strength:

Remote Control, Smooth Scan, Excellent Video to Sound sync, Plays all DVDS so far, outputs.

Weakness:

Sometimes you can hear the disc spinning.

I love this DVD player. This is my first DVD player purchase and I did much research before purchasing. I did not need the model which had built in DD decoding because my Sony reciever does this work for me. So far, the player has played every DVD flawlessly and played the MATRIX with no problems whatsoever. I never notice any scene changes, and have never had a lip sync problem with this machine. It's very sleek looking and fits nicely on top of my receiver. The remote control is well laid out and has all of the options you need for this mid-priced dvd player. The smooth-scan that sony offers is great for slow-mo play back, and I have never had any problems with this. It had played every DVD and even my CD's sound just as good as my CD player, which I no longer use. The on screen user interface is a bit vague becuase of the 'icons' used that you will be clicking on. It has parental control, which I have no need for but would like to have if I had kids in the house.

Excellent DVD player, looks great, plays great, and sounds great. Some might say the picture looks soft, I don't think so. However I am only using a composite connection to a 19" TV. I cannot wait to utilize the component video outputs to a new wide screen TV I am currently looking to purchase.

Go buy one, if you can find it cheaper than 250, which I paid for, your getting one great deal.

This is great for entry level DVDS, it does not even seem entry level.

Those who should buy it are people who do not want to spend a fortune, but do not want a cheaply produced DVD player, this one has many features. Those who should not buy it are those AUDIOPHILES who are highly critical and need super machines. This will do great for just about anyone.

Enjoy the entertainment!

John

MAjor problem playing some DVD's - Error c-13 pops up

Overall - not pleased at all. Especially considering it's a Sony! I was very surprised to find problems with a Sony product. While watching 'Goodfellas' and the 'Terminator 2' the DVD stops and an error message appears. Error c-13. The manual describes this as a dirty dvd. Well, not only was the dvd perfectly clean, it was brand new, first time playing out of the box (same for the 'Goodfellas' dvd) The most annoying part was the need to eject and start all over! Even if I jumped to that specific chapter, the player would stop and display that message.
I packed the unit up and was about to step out the door when I decided to read the reviews on this page. Glad I did. Now instead of switching brands I will simply get a new Sony (probably same model)
If anyone has experienced this problem pls e-mail me at nbound@Earthlink.net.

Strength:

Solid feel to the construction; numerous a/v connections; very nice, large remote; handled a variety of discs very well

Weakness:

Annoying onscreen function displays; noisy operation; soft, dim picture

My first player was the Hitachi which had a fine, sharp picture but was very prone to picture hang-ups (it was as if every disc had three or four layer changes). Returned that and brought home the Sony DVP-S360 which played discs flawlessly but suffered from an extremely soft, washed-out picture reminiscent of digitally mastered VHS. That player's noticeable whirring noise while playing discs tended to mar enjoyment of quiet scenes during movies. Decided to do some research rather than relying on brand names and, after checking out this and other sites I've happily settled on the Toshiba SD-1600 (sucessor to the well-regarded SD-1200), which has a picture at least a good as the Hitachi's, plays every disc I've watched on it (including The Abyss, The Matrix and Sleepy Hollow) without a hitch, and does so much more quietly than the Sony.

Weakness:

Seems to pause 1 second on one scene change in every movie

I have only had this player for 3 days and have only watched 2 movies, Jurassic Park and Any Given Sunday. On both movies in a scene change there seemed to be a brief 1 second pause. I thought it was just me blinking or something, but when I backed up the dvd it was definately there. Is this normal or do I have a bum unit? This is my first dvd player so I think it might be that scene changes are more noticable than on a VHS player, simulating the appearance of a pause (although it happens only once about halfway through each movie, even though there are other scene changes)? Otherwise the picture and sound are great. The setup was relatively easy and I have no tray noise coming from the unit, it runs nice and smooth. If anyone can help with the pause problem let me know. It bugs me.

Thanks

This player is great! I almost bought the pioneer dv333 but it looked and felt way too cheap. Sony has combined looks with great quality that will fit anyone's budget.

Nice dvd player for the money. It provides plenty of outputs and has plenty of features. Easy to use and setup. I think that the picture is great and if you find that it is too soft, a minor tweaking of the TV corrects the problem.

Compared to the Toshiba and Pioneer, Sony wins hands down.

Strength:

Great sound quality, great price, slim design, lots of outputs.

Weakness:

soft picture. Tweaking of the TV and DVD's picture settings cleared it up considerably however.

This DVD player boasts a sleek size, good range of outputs, and a great price. Though there are some complaints of a soft picture and washed out color, these are easily fixed by tweaking the TV, and DVD's picture settings.

I currently have the S360 hooked up to my Sony STR-DE845 through Optical Digital on the audio end, and S-video on the video end; the sound is incredible, especially for a DVD player in it's price range, and the Optical definitely does this player justice. The S-video quality is equally great.

Overall, if you would like a great DVD player at a great price, this is one to seriously consider purchasing. Audiophiles, and the like will love it's range of outputs, and beginners will love it's ease of use.

Great picture, slim design

This is my first DVD player and I'm very happy with this purchase. Picture quality is great. It's easy to use (although I'm still learning all of the functions). The sound of voice, instruments and effects are excellent. And the design is attractive.

I bought it at Sears (they had to order it because they were out of stock), and I've had it for less than 1 week. I bought it at Sears, because of the tip from other posters that Sears would match internet pricing (discount code #15 eCommerce). ;) I almost bought this unit at best buy for $249.00! On the web, I found a price of $189.00, printed it out and took it to Sears. All they wanted was proof to match the price. Then on top of that, they gave me an additional 10% off for using a Sear charge card. I was prepared to pay cash, but 10% is 10%!

Since I don't have any experience with other DVD players, I can't make a comparrison. But I think that anyone buying a DVD player for the first time will be very happy with this one.

Strength:

Very quiet and sleek-looking, well-designed remote, component video out, made in Japan. Good price
(I paid $375 CDN at Dynevor Electronics in Toronto)

Weakness:

Music CDs sound distorted, even with Audio Attentuation (ATT) activated. Dark picture. Does not play CD-Rs.

I was waiting for an entire year for this model to come out. I wanted a unit with component video out, but without a 5.1 decoder built in. After reading horror reviews about the Panasonic, and being none too impressed with Toshiba or Sharp, I decided Sony was the only way to go.

The remote is well designed and its buttons are logically laid out. If you can't find the remote, you can navigate the DVD menu using controls on the player itself.

I suppose I'm depriving myself of the excellent picture quality that this unit has to offer, because I'm using the composite/RCA video out. Oh well, my fault. I should have been thinking ahead when I bought my 27" Sony TV two and a half years ago, and I should have sprung for a model with S-Video for $100 more. As a result, the picture looks soft and dark and I have to turn up the contrast and brightness on my screen. But it's definately a dramatic improvment over VHS. I'm sure S-Video will improve this situation.

I'm disappointed in the fact that this unit sounds distorted when playing CDs. I should also mention the fact that I'm using the RCA audio outs to connect to a Technics SA-GX490 Pro-Logic Receiver. Again, I'm convinced this would be corrected if I used the digital outs instead.

Strangely, this unit will play CD-RWs but not CD-Rs.

Conclusion: Excellent player for the money, and I have no regrets. I hope to upgrade my receiver soon and my TV someday. Nevertheless I'm very satisfied with the picture and sound quality when playing DVD movies.

I use to have a Sony DVP-S330 for a couple of months but I was missing the components output due to the limitation of my A/V Receiver. So when I saw the new model DVP-S360, I trade my S330 for the S360 (+ a few dollars....) and I finaly have the Ideal DVP player for my need ( No 5.1 built-in)I am not an expert, but a happy user......I think that this unit is perfect in my system .
