Strength:

Great picture, extremely easy to set up, overall excellent value.

Weakness:

Very,Very,Very noisey at times

This DVD player is a great player. Yeah it gets noisey at times but once, you get into the movie you kind of block out the sound. And this problem only happens when the movie starts but after the movie has been going for about 10-15 minutes its as quite as a new Mercedes Benz.

Weakness:

stupid lip synching problem

I'd just like to reiterate what everyone else has said. Great player, but that lip synch problem is horrible. It appeared multiple times on Vertigo. I have firmware 1.95, and have never seen any problems like this on any other players. Now I have to return it to the store and get the firmware upgraded. To people looking at this product, _make_sure_ it has a later firmware version!

Strength:

Great picture quality, Nice features, Like the look.

Weakness:

No component outputs like other units in price range. Lip-
Sync problem

Bought the unit about 2 months ago along with a new STR DB930 Reciever and Klipsch Quintets and 12" Sub.
The unit played the first 5 or 6 movies just fine and then the lip sync problem showed up. After looking at other reviews and getting the serial # range and firmware ver.
I returned the unit to the Good Guys were it was purchased.
The salesman I delt with was very cooperative and helped find me a serial number in the 300000 range and hooked it
up to check the firmware ver. The Individual service was great. This was even after they met Price/Costco's price of $269.Everything OK and are having no problems.
For the price of the unit I just don't think it can be beat.

I am very happy with my Sony DVD player. I haven't had any problems with it. The audio sync problem that some describe hasn't happened to me. This is a great player. I suggest it to anyone looking for an entry-level player.

Strength:

Great when it works.

Weakness:

A fault in lip-sync and audio cutting out

This a new entry as Sony has a fix for the lip-syce issue on the DVP-S330. After phoning Sony many times and getting a big run-around the finaly informed me that there is a fix for the problem which requires a new chip. After leaving the machine in a repair shop for three weeks we finaly got it back and have now watched three movies without the audio cutting out or losing it's sync. However while watching The Matrix there was still a slight pause when the layers switched over. I hope that our machine is now fixed and I encourage others to complain to Sony as they should not have released a product if it was not ready.

Strength:

Exceptional performance for the price

Weakness:

None so far

Purchased this unit on January 10, 2000, I am quite pleased with it's performance, It has two S video out jacks and two RCA video out jacks, the same dual output for stereo sound. I've played at least 25 DVD's without any problem. I bought this player from Circuit City for $279.00. I recieved a coupon for 2 free DVD's and a additional coupon from Circuit City for 5 more DVD's. Also included are 10 free rentals from netflix. All in all a great bargain.

Strength:

Picture quality

Weakness:

Reliabiility

What can you say about a product that works well for about a year and then dies? I noticed the lip sync problem early on, but would just stop the player and restart it and that would go away. More recently I encountered the problem mentioned below regarding jumping from a chapter to an earlier one for no apparent reason. Then, a week ago the unit would not power up at all. I debated taking it in for service, but since it is out of warranty, the price would be almost the same as buying a new unit. I have replaced it with a carousel player from Toshiba and am hoping for better long term reliability.

I doubt you can get one of these any more, except on a used equipment auction site. However, beware if it has been used more that a few months. Its days are probably limited.

Strength:

great Picture, great sound

Weakness:

it's a sony, loud disk drive, no component video, and can't read a CDR disc

I bought this DVD player right before the prices went down so at $305 I felt slightly screwed a mere six weeks after I bought it, but I will have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the player. I have had nothing but problems with Sony equipment I've owned prior to this but I felt that this was the most user friendly, had the best looking picture, and best sound in the price range. I was looking for a DVD player that was DD and DTS compatible but didn't have a decoder since I wanted to use the decoder in my Denon AVR-3300. This didn't leave me with many choices, I didn't like the pioneers, I wasn't impressed with the Samsung, GE, RCA or any of the others so I went with this one. I've never had a problem with the power button, white spots or lip synch problems, and I'm pretty anal when it comes to my audio/video equipment. The only real complaints I have are the lack of component video outputs, the inability to read CDR discs, and the noise created by the drive. I occasionally hear the disc spinning in the drive when the volume is low.

My system: (at least the important parts)

Dennon AVR-3300
Sony DVP-S330
Monster cables
B&W 302's all the way around
B&W CC3 Center channel
Velodyne CT-120 sub
