Everything, It didn't work

Bought this for 300 from circuit city, plugged it in and the picture was coming up green, my friend has a sony the same year, so we tried running the dvd on that, and it worked fine. My dvd player was skipping and the picture was full of green so you couldn't see what was going on at all. Tried to other dvds on it and got the same result. I returned it bought a better TV and a GE DVD and am enjoying it great...if it had worked I might have liked it, value has to be low, cause the model above this sony was no better than the GE I bought, overall, it does has some features, but relaibility and hard to use bring it down.....I would suggest buying something else.

none so far

I posted an earlier review for the Toshiba SD-2109. I liked alot of things about the machine, but in this revision I must say that the downconversion artifacts did start to annoy me after awhile. I decided to try the Sony DVP-S330 out, before my exchange option expired. What I found is virtually no downconversion artifacts! The picture is a tad less sharp, but what you lose in sharpness, you are more than compensated for by the lack of artifacts, and the more natural looking picture. I noticed immediately on the Toshiba the shimmering lines and the busy edge artifacts. The Sony has a picture more people are used to. It's a lot like watching a laser disc, albeit the resolution is a bit highter! I've experienced no lipsynch problems yet. But, I'm only using the analog outputs via my tv set so I may not encounter it anyway. From what I understand it often shows up as a delay in decoder/receivers via the digital outputs. I purchased the unit at Future Shop for 499 canadian. It includes 7 free movies and 13 rentals! P.S. I've read a post in rec.video.dvd.players, that even the new firmware 2.210 players are exhibiting lipsynch! So,maybe the prob. isn't in the firmware?

Audio Sync Problems

I read the other reviews on the Sony DVP-S330 DVD player and I must say that I have now watched about 4 movies and the audio snyc problem has already occured. The serial number is 0238606 so I expected that Sony had fixed the problem by now, but no luck. This is totally unacceptable performance from this player. I will return this for a new one(since I do like the features of this unit) and hope that the engineers at Sony can figure out what they are doing. I will update another posting after I try the new unit.

Strength:

Good video, decent audio. Easy setup and menus
Have not experienced the Audio Sync problems

Weakness:

No component video out. Flimsy construction

Not a bad unit for this price. would be a good Bedroom unit for a secondary system. I don;'t think it could be the center of a Good home theater system. Still loking for a main unit. considering Denon THX or Sony 7700.

Weakness:

the dreaded audio unsynch

Bought the Sony DVP-S330 on the advice of Mike DelVecchio at City Circuit(Turmbull Mall). I wanted decent quality at entry-level price and I feel his advice was on target. After awhile, I began noticing lip-synch problems, not consistently, so I thought it was just me. But some episodes were beginning to be a whole second out of synch and I just felt it was intolerable despite the appeal of the price and all the other nice features. CC took it back, no hassle (first we tried one with the most recent serial # hoping it had an updated chip). It did teach me that I like DVD movies after all, so now I'm waiting for delivery of a Sony DVP S7700d. That should do the trick.

Strength:

remote control, menu aesthetics, scanning

Weakness:

noisy motor and the bloody lip-out-of-synch problem

a disappointment in that i would have loved to have kept it but the sync problem is too irritating for me to have endured. try the pioneer instead. not as pretty a system, but much tighter

Strength:

Price; ease of set up; DVD giveaways

Weakness:

Not upgradeable—probably a short-term video investment.

I have had this player for a couple weeks, and am really enjoying it. It is my first foray into DVD, so perhaps the medium is seducing me as much as the player. It has all the features I need as an entry-level enthusiast, but I am aware that there are features I may want in the future as I become more adept as a home theatre fanatic.
I love the total command DVD gives you as a viewer, and the Sony does some neat things…like two speeds of slow motion. It also has a universal remote which operates my Sony 27 inch TV, so there is a bit less clutter in my family room.
The video quality of the player is so much better than VHS. I can’t compare with other DVD players because this is my first experience. I am also pleased with the audio quality, because I use it in place of a 12-year-old NAD CD player I used to have hooked up in by viewing room.
So far, no problems with lip synch or color saturation. Count me one happy budding videophile.

Strength:

Easy setup, good remote, nice picture

Weakness:

None significant yet

I purchased this product from Circuit City, mainly because of the AV sync problems I have heard about on this board. (CC has an easy return policy) Well, my serial number was in the 26000 range with 2.1 firmware and I have not experienced any problems. I have played The Matrix, The Prince of Egypt, Muppets in Space, Die Hard 2, and Apollo 13 and I haven't had any problem yet. In fact I only noticed the layer chang on one of the movies (Die Hard 2). I am using the reciever with the DD decoder in my Onkyo TX-DS575 receiver.

I wonder if the AV sync problem has something to do with the receiver/DVD player matchup?

Overall, I would say good value for money and a good player so far.

Strength:

quiet, remote

Weakness:

lip sync, hidden 24 bit/96khz unadjustable downconversion to
20 bit 48khz

Took the sony back due to lip sync and hidden downconversion,
got a toshiba sd 2109, which at first had a barely audible
but still noticable lower frequency motor whine ... which
over time became an absolutely horrible high frequency screech. Thanks to this web site I got the pioneer 525
and am very pleased.

Strength:

Excellent Picture, Flawlwass Digital SOund Orientation, Seemless integration with AC-3 and DTS.

Weakness:

Sony unable to tell you the firmware by the serial number.

Well I was lucky. I picked up this player from Circuit City at employee cost of $263. I immediately popped the case and saw that I had the firmware revision of 2.1. Sony is either unwilling, or unable to provide adequate info based on the serial number of the unit. For that you must pop up the case and look at the chip at the top left corner.

Excellent color rendition and clarity. Nothing except the reference series comes close to it. Do not be fooled by cheap substitutes from GE, RCA, ProScan (these units have almost a 40% return ratio at my store in Florida). The Sony has dual outputs (great for VCR connectivity), and sounds better than my local theater with my Onkyo TXDS777. This is top notch video, and as a Video Sales Manager for CC, the street price of $299 is excellent considering a cost of $263. I am using Monster Cable Video 2 series s-video and Monster cable for Optical audio. NO lip sync errors either. In closing...ROCK SOLID.
