I bought this unit in 1997, one step below the flagship S-7000, which were sold out. It has performed flawlessly since then, and even today I use it on a CRT based smaller home theater system. It still does the job, and if it only did blu-ray, it would be as useful as any new unit sold today. This fine old product is a credit to the Sony name, and reminds us of what fine quality Sony stood for when they were still owned and directed by those who honored the code of bushido.

Strength:

Flawless perfomance since the purchase date to present.

Weakness:

No DTS output but most DVDs are in Dolby Digital anyway. Unit is physically massive, sticks out from my stereo stand, it's deeper then my reciever!

I have been using this DVD player for 6 years now and it has performed flawlessly. It plays every DVD and CD I have put inside of it and was well worth the money ($799 canadian)I paid for it. I have replaced every component in my home stereo except this unit and I have no plans to in the near future. This player easily out performs many of the newer units friends of mine have purchased.

Strength:

Excellent DD5.1 and displays amazing video quality

Weakness:

No DTS or component video {oh well!}

This player is simply amazing. It has definetly stood the test of time over and over again. The whole family uses it and over 1000 dvd's have been popped into the tray. A real brute. Way to go Sony!

Strength:

* Great DVD picture * Rock solid reliability * Outstanding movie sound * Outstanding value over time and use

Weakness:

* "Acceptable" sound for music only use * No DTS, HDCD, or video component output (before their advent).

Good bye old friend! After five years of faithful and flawless use I'm retiring my Sony DVD 3000 for a Denon 3800 with video component outputs. I'm glad I got the "little brother" of the then 1997 DVD Benchmark Sony DVD 7000 because I got all the top of the line qualities for hundreds of dollars less. This unit NEVER choked on any DVD or CD I've fed it over five years of contineous use (avg 2-3 movies/week). The picture through the S Video is outstanding with good color and details. The DVD sound through my Denon AVR 3800 with coaxial Harmonic Technology's Copper Cable has always been very good. (Slightly better than the fiber optic.) While great for movies, it was merely adequate" for music. The D/A converters produced music that didn't have "depth" and was "cold". An audphile quality CD player will demonstrate it's musical shortcomings. If you can find a well cared for used unit with no history of problems, I recommend it as a "Best Buy" second unit for direct TV hook up or a modest HT system with only S-Video connections. Yes, I would "bronze" this if I could and nominate it for the Audio/Video Hall of Fame if there is one. Good bye old faithful friend.

Strength:

Everything. Truly.

Weakness:

No DTS. No component video out.

This is the best component I have ever purchased in my life. The video is superb. The audio for movies is incredible. And it has played every DVD, cd and cd-r I have in my collection, marvelously. The cd player, just like a previous reviewer stated is quite decent, but not audiophile quality. Though purchased in 1997, I still hesitate to purchase a new DVD player. I have compared it to numerous Denon, Toshiba and other Sony players and still feel like it is on par if not better than these newer models. I wish it could read and pass DTS signals but it was released prior to the public introduction of DTS. I also wish that it had component video outs. Outside of these complaints, I love this player. Can you believe that it is still my primary DVD player in my system after 4-5 years? I'm willing to bet that those who were fortunate enough to nab one of these before Sony took them off the market would have a similar testimony. It is my baby, and even when I do upgrade DVD players one day, this will go on the mantle over the fireplace. Do they bronze DVD players?

Strength:

Great sound and video quality.

Weakness:

Huge remote and no component video output

Excellent player! Still going strong after 4 years. Picture and sound quality are excellent. I have tried other DVD players and this one outperforms all of them. The player has never frozen or skipped. Very happy.

Strength:

Excellent video/sound quality. Both optical and co-ax digital outputs. Very quiet.

Weakness:

None to mention.

I have had this unit for just over 2 years now, and I have been very happy with it. I just got a Dolby Digital receiver with DTS so I sometimes wonder about getting a DTS DVD player, but there doesn't seem to be enough DTS DVD's to warrant the upgrade. I have only had 1 DVD not function properly; it was Saving Private Ryan. It worked the first time, finally worked a second time after opening and closing the drawer many, many times. From then on it never would work again until I went into the Test Mode (which I am not supposed to do) and ran the re-align function with the DVD in the player and stumbled through the process without a service manual and got it working flawlessly. Of course I was afraid that I had screwed it up for other discs, but so far everything works. I am very happy to be lucky enough to have bought one of these while they were available.

Strength:

Reference quality video, industrial build, CD sound quality far superior to most other players I've used.

Weakness:

I would have preferred gold plated audio outputs

Bought product used about 5 months ago. As opposed to other reviewers, I find that the CD sound quality of this unit is exeptional among dvd players. Perhaps others are hearing the limitations of their systems. Bass is tight and quick, Mid-range response is smooth and detailed, Treble is accurate but not harsh. As for video, there is nothing that hasn't already been said. Also, I have only tried it once, but, as long as you have DTS decoding in your system you can play DTS CD's on this unit. But you cannot play DTS DVD's. If anyone has had a different experience please feel free to e-mail me and tell me about it.The doctor is in.

Strength:

Does most everything; menu controls on unit as well as remote.

Weakness:

Doesn't pass DTS stream, no component out.

This is a great player. I've been using it for over a year now, and I haven't had a single problem with it.

One nice feature is that the menu controls are on the front of the unit as well as on the remote. This kicks in when I can't find the remote, but just want to do something simple to get the movie going.

The only real drawback is that it doesn't pass the DTS stream. That's no problem for me though, because I don't have any DTS equipment anyway.

Outputs are pretty good; composite and S-Video, 2 stereo RCA outputs and both coax and optical digital outputs.

I'm only giving this 4 stars because it can't pass a DTS stream. Other than that, this player is perfect.
