Strength:

Best possible 480p video using HDMI connections.

Weakness:

None.

We purchased the Sony DVP-NS75H DVD player with HDMI to connect to our 40-inch Sony flat-panel TV. HDMI stands for “High Definition Multimedia Interface.” Since the TV has the highest-quality audio/visual HMDI input, it was logical to buy a DVD player with a HMDI output. One HDMI cable takes the place of three component video cables and two audio cables. As good as three-cable component video connections are, connecting with a single cable HDMI visibly improves upon all other forms of video connections. According to the High Definition Hardware web site,

“There are several advantages of HDMI over existing analog interfaces such as composite, S-Video and component video. HDMI transfers uncompressed digital audio and video for the highest, crispest image quality. The all digital connection ensures rendering of video without the losses associated with analog interfaces and their unnecessary digital-to-analog conversions. HDMI provides the quality and functionality of a digital interface while also supporting uncompressed video formats in a simple, cost-effective manner” (www.hidefhardware.com/2006/07/what_is_hdmi.html).

After calibrating the TV with the Avia DVD, the Sony DVP-NS75H DVD player displayed 480p with DVD’s in what could be described as the best video possible other than high definition DVD which is just now (2006) becoming available.

We watched “Ben-Hur,” “Once Upon a Time in the West,” and “The Scarlet Empress,” (1934) a stunning Criterion DVD. The Sony DVP-NS75H with its HDMI output is superlative. One could possibly spend a great deal more money for miniscule increments of video improvement. This Sony DVD represents good value for fine video viewing.

Picture is great but after about 3 months the video signal started cutting out and everything went black. I have since got another and hopefully it works better.
