Question...see below

I have been using my Sony DVP-C650D for almost a year. I have had some house guests staying over my place and they were using my DVD player. Recently, I have noticed my Dolby Digital Indicator (blue light bar under the display) does not illuminate when playing CD's and DVDs. This used to light in the past when playing DVD movies (i.e.: Titanic) and I am pretty sure when playing CDs but now it does not.

I am wondering if there is a configuration or set up parameter that was inadvertently change by my house guests. I can not figure it out. Any help from afar is greatly appreciated. I am hoping this LED has not burned out.

Thanks for your help...Frank

Picture Clarity

Weakness:

A liitle noise when switching disks

I bought mine at the end of Feb. It was an open box at circuit city for $329. I first went in to buy a tv, a 32in
Wega, then decided to talk to the sales guy about DVD players. I wanted one that could also play VCDs, since I have a large collection from when I was going to school in China. He mentioned he had this new model that had been on display for three weeks and never used. The sales guy said he was thinking of buying it. He gave me the price of $329 and I became really happy. The sales guy was definitely in my corner because at the same time we were talking the manager was trying to raise the price back to $400 plus. Luckily, the price was already quoted to me and I took the player home for $329.

I am not an expert but I love this machine. I have never had a single problem. The clarity is awesome, running component video. All my VCDs play fine.

Eventually I intend to hook up a speaker system. Can't wait till that day.

Definitely reccomend it!!

This is a follow-up to my previous review.
My advice:
If you read the rest of the reviews (there's a ton of them), you'll notice a lot of people complain about that problem where there's a gap between audio CD changes. I don't use my player for CDs, so I've never experienced the problem. Though the player is great (except for those things I mentioned in my review below), I would return it to your dealer if you can. If you're using it for audio CDs, you will find this problem will annoy you more and more. The player is fantastic when it does what it's suppose to do, bit otherwise I think it's a lemon. Tell your dealer that you want to trade up to the 660 - same player, but this year's model. Tell him the following:
- audio gap problem
- freeze frame between layer changes
- loud, distracting motor
The 660 should be available real soon, if it's not already.

Strength:

Replaced "dedicated" CD player(s). *** WILL PLAY BOTH CD-R & CD-RW with NO problem. ***

Weakness:

It was a bit of a challenge for me to configure it with my Denon AVR-4800 receiver with the optical cable. The various companies need to standardize on the terminology for the various (i.e. same) hook-ups.

I've been using this unit since December '99 and just LOVE IT! It does everything that I expected of it and more! I feel I will "wear out" this unit before I get tired of it (i.e. replace it with newer technology). I plan to get a second unit for my den so I can also waste away time in there watching DVD movies or listening to my CD collection.

Possible Heat Problem????

I love this unit! I was having some of what I believe were heat related problems from my Amp. The colors would bleed to reds and blues and slowly fade to the Sony DVD Blue Screen, while the audio worked fine (about 30 minutes into a film). I have a Sony 777ES that was placed just below the DVD changer shelf, moved the DVD changer 2 shelves up, problem went away....

Lesson More than Adequate Ventilation!!!

Now if I could only get my Sony Mega Changer to fit in my Rack....rather than on top of it.

Between the two my cinema is NOW Open!!

Strength:

Dolby Digital, DTS Capable, 5-Disk Carousel, Digital Output, Integrated Remote

Weakness:

A little pricey - I could have just used a 5-disk carousel without DD and the soundfields since my A/V receiver is already DD and DTS with the same soundfield capability

If you have never heard a DTS Audio CD, you don't know what you're missing. And if you like live concerts, DTS puts you right there. And for the audio enthusiast, you'll be glad to know that DTS CD's are only a few more dollars than regular CD's. In fact, you can get the most value at www.kencranes.com where they sell most DTS Audio CD's for $17.50 vs. $25.00 list, with only $2.50 shipping "per order."

This DVD player has a number of features, but is too expensive if you already have a higher level A/V receiver with many of the same features. But, I decided to go with it anyway since I really wanted the DTS output and the 5-disk carousel, which allows me to forgo buying a separate CD player. I have not experienced any of the problems to-date that many others have previously noted, particularly lip-sync. I'm not sure what version my software is - does anyone out there know how to find out?

I bought it from Crutchfield for $599.00 (ask for Eddie). It was nice to work with someone who is really knowledgeable about audio products and who was not half my age. Crutchfield may not have the lowest prices on certain items, but their service and low shipping cost makes them a better value for my money.

My current home theater includes:
Sony STR-DB830 A/V Receiver
Sony DVP-C650D (DTS Capable)
Sony SLV-678HF VCR
Sony FD Trinitron WEGA KV-27FV15 TV
Polk Audio RM6500 Powered Subwoofer/Satellite Speaker System (“A”)
B&W 503 Tower Speakers (“B”)
Monster HP Speaker Cables

The picture output is great and as is the audio through the digital optical output. I haven't tried the digital coax output yet - has anyone out there compared the difference between these two digital output types? The remote is the easiest one of the lot to understand and use right out of the box. 1 star penalty due to its high price. Enjoy!

Strength:

Picture Quality, Sound Quality, 5-Disc Changer, DSP soundfields, Price. Functionality of remote control.

Weakness:

Text Display, & No Zoom.

This DVD player ROCKS! I Currently have it hooked up to a Sony 32in Trinitron Wega via component hookups by Better Cables. Picture quality is excellent, clarity is truely stunning. Sound is output via the digital-coax cable into a Sony H.T. amp. Again, as with the picture quality, the sound is equally impressive offering a true to life theater experience. I cant praise this DVD player enough.. sure there are some minor quirks to the product, but compared to the other DVD players out there (in this price range) The Sony DVP-C650D wins hands down. I have yet to experience any of the famed lip-sync problems. If your in the market, do yourself a favor.. buy buy buy! 5/5 stars. 5/5 overall.

Strength:

You can tweak this unit quite a bit from the setup menu to mold it to your HT. NO! not the dvd menu I said the SETUP menu. And remember don't review a product if you don't own it! Forget this "I heard/saw it at a friend's house" stuff or "I read about it in a magazine" stuff.

Weakness:

None thus far.

This is a solid performer! By the weight of it it's a pretty well built unit. I like the SETUP menu in which you can tweak the levels of your speakers, speaker configuration, surround effects, etc. Picture, colorization, and black against black? It does very well. Audio from DVDs, CDs? Precise crisp and alot of depth. I like!!!!!
