Too many reviews to elaborate! So I'll cut to the chase.Sin of Sins!I bought this unit a year ago knowing that the price would be in half by now, which it is and I really don't care. For all of you who bought the 600d at Circuit City,or Sears,or Target;or where ever I congratulate you on being a smart shopper!
I do the same, but in this case I
wanted the first carousal DVD player/CD player and I bought it.Now obviously, there are better CD players out there.Cal Labs,Classe,etc.etc.and probably there are better DVD players also. But not in one package.Since I have owned this piece it has played everything, and I mean everything, that I have put in it;and it has played both DVD and CD's extremely well.It has been trouble free, quiet, detailed, accurate, true to the source, and simply a work horse of a machine.
DVD sound and presentation is excellent.CD sound, detail, and the ALL Important TONAL Qualities have been more than agreeable. The 600d, as with most with most sony products tends to be a bit forward, and some folks would label it as inarticulate in it's brightness on the upper mid-bass to treble range. These same folks would sugest a player that produces that faithful warm, harmonic, top to bottom, truth in reproduction that is so well desired;and that one, that is so! so! well, so stereophile class A.
All of which I have no quarrel
with;except that it is going to cost you!!Let's see the,the Cal Labs 25 is HOW MUCH?? OH !! Or the New Wadia 860 CD plus the New DVD Flavor of the month????
So even though I wasn't a smart
shopper like you'all, I really was; CUZ there there ain't no 5 disk player on the market that does what the 600d does, and for the price, yours; not mine,it does it all well above average! In my book that's
what HI-FI is all about.

I bought this unit because it was the only DVD player that has a 5 CD changer and also because it can control a Sony 200 disc mega-changer. While I am impressed with the DVD picture quality and the audio, I have to agree with Chuck that the player does miss the intro to songs in shuffle play. This only happens when using the coaxial or optical outputs and not the baseband outputs. I believe the issue may be with my receiver (a Sherwood/Newcastle R925) which may mute the digital input when it does not detect a signal. The on-board DAC sounds OK, the output levels are a little low, and I would much rather use the DAC in my receiver. 4 stars due to that fact that the unit cannot pass a DTS encoded DVD even though it can pass a DTS encoded CD. I mentioned this to Sony and asked if there will be some type of "upgrade" to rectify this situation. I received no response. The new Sony players can now pass a DTS DVD.

I returned this unit a week a go after owning it for 30 days. First of all the build quality was a little disappointing to me. The cheap plastic front had allthese little peaks and valleys in it when the light hit it just right.(I know this has nothing to do with the player performance, but it makes you wonder if they put the same little effort inside as they did outside) The performance sound wise and video wise was right on par with other $300-$400 players, but I paid $600 for this unit on sale (went for $800 originally). I think $200 dollars is alot extra to pay for a tray that holds 5 discs. The unit performed fine, but it just felt like too much money. Sony is releasing a DTS version of this unit in August, so I would advise people to wait and possibly check the newer unit out.

I like most things about this product. However, contrary to another review posted here, my unit will not play CD-R discs. It will play for a few seconds, then there will be a few seconds with no sound, and it will continue to alternate between sound and no sound. I called Sony tech support, and they confirmed that it does not support CD-Rs. I told him I thought this was strange, because neither my 8-year-old CD player (which I unfortunately gave away when I bought this unit), nor my car CD changer, nor my portable CD player has any problems with CD-Rs. He didn't have any explanation. I asked why this was not stated in the specs or in the manual, and he said this was an oversight, and he would report it to the appropriate people. Since I didn't discover this until after my 30-day return period was over, I asked if I could return it to Sony. No, not possible.
So this is just a warning to anyone thinking of getting this model. Don't expect to be able to play CD-Rs. Also, I have found four commercial CDs so far that it has the same problem with - it goes silent for short periods. (These are also CDs that none of my other players have problems with.) Because of this, and because the ability to play CD-Rs is important to me, I'm giving it 2 stars.

Since receiving this unit as a Christmas gift, it has worked great. I haven't experienced any problems with the sound or video. The specs on this machine are nearly the same as the Sony reference model. The picture is unbelievable man.
Good points:
1) Just about all of the audio and video outputs are duplicated. This makes it easy to do A/B comparisons of cables.
2) Five CD/DVD carousel.
3) Dolby Digital decoder built in.
4) Excellent picture.

Bad points:
1) Cannot play DTS encoded DVDs.
2) The slow 1, slow 2, FF 1 and FF 2 functions on the remote are difficult to access.
3) The price will probably drop in half. I paid $600+. I wouldn't be surprised if that price drops to $400+ sometime this year.

Dispite the bad points. I would highly recommend this product.

I've had the DVP-C600D for about a week. I bought it after reading a great review about it in Home Theater magazine. My unit was a Good Guys open box for $599 (they also threw in five free DVD movies). The unit was new and appeared to never have been out of the box.
The sound is great through my Yamaha RXV995 receiver and Magnaplaner speakers. The DVD picture produces the best picture I have ever seen on my 12 year old Sony 27" tv. The CD sound is flwaless. I got the turntable changer unit because my 11 year old Technics cartridge changer was tired and refused to read all the cd's in the cartridges.

I highly recommend this unit although if I had to pay the posted $799 price, I would have ended up with a cheaper, single disk player.

My experience with the c600d so far has been a very good one, though I wish the player would let you control the IRE level or pluge, the blacker than black background is achieved easily with the help of the DVD essentials disk.
The 5.1 Digital sound is very impressive and accurate, condersidering it is only a bunch of 1's and 0's which is being processed by my yamaha dsp-1 anyway.
The loss of DTS is no biggie, you can still pass the signal, as long as the dts is encoded to a normal cd, not a dvd, you can pass the signal to a processor(tried it and works great). DTS is overated when it comes to audio, I perfer a good 2 channel instead.

I have a question maybe someone can help me with, the dac is 96khz to 24bit, now the new dvd audio format is still being decided, there is rumor you will need a sererate dvd audio player to take advantage of 24 to 96 or 24 to 144, 2 channel, dual density dvd audio. Then someone tell me why the hell would you put a 24 to 96 in a dvd video, if I can't use that dac for audio??(dvd audio)

I give the c600d 4 out of 5, very good player..

p.s. on a cd-r use coaxial instead of optical, I've had no prolbrems with any
cd format thus far... sugg. cable(mit terminator 3 coax).

I have owned two of these units. Both had the flaw of what seemed to be mis-aligned lasers. When using the unit for audio cd's the Sony would pick up the selection two or three beats into the music. This is only a problem when using 'shuffle play' or when the disc changes. No problems with the video either in sound or picture. Sony did not respond to my complaint. Excellent remote, easy to use set-up and menu. This unit is not my choice for audio listening due to the above mentioned problem.

I've had this player for about 5 months now and i've had no problems with it yet. The video is pretty good and the audio is even better. Even the built in decoder is fairly decent considering it is built into the player. Although i don't think this player is for everyone, it is certainly something to look at if you plan on using it as your cd changer also. I think trying to watch 5 movies in 1 sitting is ridiculous. Considering the cost of a good cd changer and a DVD player makes this product look even better. I'd have to say that paying $500 for this unit was more than worth it. The unit is not specified to pass any DTS signals but I was wondering if anyone had tried it and if it works. This player gets a 5 for excellent performance.

Has anyone heard if there will be anyway for this otherwise great player to be upgraded to pass the DTS signal to an outboard decoder? I love this machine other than the lack of DTS.
