Weakness:

durability and quality contol..

I am sad to say I expected a much better product from Sony. Shortly after( 5 Months) buying this DVD we experianced Error messages and the DVD player just stopped reading our DVD's. When we put in disk it would read "NO disk" Took it in for repar ( $80.00 in labor parts covered by sony)now about 6 months later its once again stopped reading our DVD's. This DVD has been nothing but a bad investment.Would think twice before buying this product may be cheeper to buy a new cheep DVD every year than pay to fix this Sony POS!!

Strength:

Good picture quality

Weakness:

I find the audio a little weak. Lip sync problem, skips chapters when changing layers, sometimes unable to read dual layer disks. Poor quality control. This product is so bad I question if I would ever purchase another sony product. I have this DVD player and a 53" Sony TV.

For those that are having the skiping up and unreadable disk problems try the following calabration. I did it last night and now my DVD's are much clearer and I'm hoping the skiping problem is gone. I can't take credit for this I got it from another post at audio review. For those that have the lip sync problem Sony should cover this for no charge, you just need to push them a little. This is a firmware update, have a look at the other posts at this web site to find the firmware revision that you need. HOW TO PERFORM THE CALIBRATION Make sure that the DVD player is turned OFF and in the stand-by mode with the little red LED glowing above the on/off button. To enter the service mode/test mode, press Title, Clear, and Power on the remote. This will produce the following menu: Test Mode Menu 0. Syscon Diagnosis 1. Drive Auto Adjustment 2. Drive Manual Operation 3. Mecha Aging 4. Emergency History 5. Version Information 6. Video Level Adjustment Exit: POWER Key What each item does; Syscon Diagnosis = Leave this for service technicians. Drive Auto Adjustment = Automatically calibrates DVDs and CDs. Drive Manual Operation = Manually calibrates DVDs and CDs with prompts for permission to skip, execute and/or proceed after each adjustment is made or skipped. Offers a fascinating look at all of the many adjustments made, but this method is time consuming. Mecha Aging = Allows auto repeat mode for testing purposes. Emergency History = Shows the number of hours on your machine. Version Information = Shows firmware version. Video Level Adjustment = Test pattern. Press #1 (Drive Auto Adjustment) on the remote and the following menu will appear: Drive Auto Adjustment 0. All 1. DVD-SL 2. CD 3. DVD-DL 4. SACD Exit: RETURN Press #1 (DVD-SL) on the remote and insert a Single Layer DVD when the drawer opens. Even though you may be interested in calibrating only a dual-layer DVD, do not skip the single-layer calibration procedure. For some reason, the player prefers to first calibrate a single-layer DVD before proceeding to a dual-layer disc. Error messages may result if the single-layer calibration procedure is not performed first. Press the enter key and the machine will begin to calibrate all of the playback features. When calibration is completed, follow the onscreen instructions to return to the above menu. When the Drive Auto Adjustment menu returns, press #3 (DVD-DL) on the remote and insert a Dual Layer DVD when the drawer opens. Follow the instructions as noted above. When calibration is completed, follow the onscreen instructions to exit from the Test Mode Menu. Now you can turn the player back on and try your dual layer discs to see if the layer change has improved. If you have any concerns about trying this service mode calibration, leave it for an authorized service facility

My sony dvd player began to skip and freeze after about 8 months of use. Very frustrating. After reading the other reviews it seems that sony has a real quality control problem. I''m currently shopping for JVC or Pioneer.

Same experience with other Sony users, the DVD player won''t play DVD anymore after about 9 months I purchased it. Sony is no longer a reliable brand for me. If a DVD player can only last for one year, I would rather buy one with no brand and just cost me around $70.

Weakness:

I have Brillo pads that have lasted longer than this DVD player

I also own a Sony DVD-S550D CD/DVD Player, and for a first DVD player it ''was'' (emphasis on was) great. Unfortunately after a year it now rarely accepts any of my DVD''s. Pretty sad for a company who stakes it''s reputation on quality. I also own some of their other products, CD Jukebox, Receiver and after my frustration with this DVD player, I can honestly say that I will never purchase a Sony product. Why pay more for quality that you never get?? Maybe if they admit that they created a faulty product and offer some compensation such as a replacement player, or repairing the current model for free would I even consider Sony again.

Strength:

No artifacts, plays cd-rw and sony brand cd-r, jog control, and dolby dts compatibility!

Weakness:

None right now!

This is one of the best dvd players around! If you are a hardcore fan of movies, buy this and a Sony Reciever with DTS! Man! That will blow you away!

Strength:

Audio is top shelf, and video is above it''s price range.

Weakness:

Faulters on scratched and dirty discs.

Where did you nay sayers get your machines. The problems you seem to be having were free fixes almost 4 years ago. I bought mine within months of coming onto the market, it needed the fixes, the chip etc.. and it has been perfect ever since. It has played every disc, even the ones that my Toshiba 2200 won''t. If there is any weakness with this machine, it is that it wasn''t perfect right from the plant, and it is more picky with dirty or scratched discs than my Toshiba.

Strength:

Picture, sound, remote jog/shuttle.

Weakness:

C 13 00 errors. Terminal illness!

At first everything with this player was fine, everything I put in played, the configuration was relatively easy, I even liked the remote (some don''t). After about a year I found that it wouldn''t play the widescreen side of a new disk (Eraser) and gave a C 13 00 error, I tried the same disk in a Pioneer and a Toshiba and it worked perfectly. Ho hum, there''s always the other side. Anyway, after a few months I found another disk it didn''t like, and then another and another. Now if I buy two disks there''s a good chance one won''t work. At this point a DVD is almost disposable, I can get pretty much the same effect from a $100 Daewoo and without the C 13 00 errors. I haven''t found any sign that Sony are fixing these things, no good reason for the errors. That is an inadequate response. No more Sony disk equipment for me.
