Strength:

Good Picture Quality, good sound and it is a great looking player.

Weakness:

In comparison with some other players it has a slow loading time.

Since it has a built in Dolby Decoder I would say it is a good buy. I haven't tested any other DVD players so I really can't compare it. My experience with the Sharp DVD player has been good so far. While watching a movie there was one slight pause that only lasted a split second. There have not been any pauses since.

Strength:

Audio & Picture Quality, Features, PRICE

Weakness:

Extremely finicky on disk cleanliness, sloooow loading

If it weren't so picky about the cleanliness of the DVD's, then it would be fantastic. But, I've put in new DVDs and had them pause/skip only to find minute traces of dust that had to be removed before the DVD would play well.

I am off to invest in a $15 CD/DVD cleaner ...

Strength:

Built in decoder. Big easy to use buttons on player.

Weakness:

Slow loading.

I originally purchased the unit for it's built in decoder. I've recently purchased a Technics decoder since my Sharp DVD was sent in for repairs. Originally, the unit ran wonderfully. I was totally satisfied. Then, it started spitting out The Matrix, Batman Beyond, and Spinal Tap DVD's 5 or 6 times before it would read them. I've been warned this unit might be visiting the repair shop more than once. Possibly, it's just a bad unit.

Strength:

-great outputs
-great picture quality
-trouble-free

Weakness:

-slow loading
-poorly designed remote

I've had this unit for a few weeks now but after viewing many movies on it (including "trouble" discs such as The Matrix and The Abyss) I've had no problems. A couple minor hiccups but they've never been repeated.

Strength:

Sound

Weakness:

Slow Loading, Freezes and Skips.

I purchased this machine in July of 2000. I was satisfied at first, however, over time the player became prone to problems. The biggest problem I had experienced was the player freezing during play. Sometimes the only way to reset the player was to power it off. The player also skipped during play for no apparent reason. Again, sometime the only way to get around the skipping problem was to power off the Unit and restart it. Initially the player looks like a great deal with a built-in 5.1 decoder and packed with visual options, however, I would strongly suggest that you look at other players, like Panasonic.

Strength:

Sound quality is excellent, picture quality is very good, and the price was nice for getting a a DTS and Digital decoder.

Weakness:

Is particular about the cleanliness of the disc.

Have experienced picture freezing, I found that my two year old had touched the back of the disc and was covered with finger prints, cleaned the disc and no more problem.

Strength:

High picture Quality, good sound, ease of setup

Weakness:

Picture stalling, occasional visual compression

Fresh out of the box, the first DVD I put in exhibited the freeze that so many have addressed, but I am still impressed with the quality of the video and audio of this near $200 unit. This is the first sharp product I have purchased, and am satisfied with it. The one issue I've noticed is the occasional "boxes" which is a sign of digital compression. This is my first DVD so I am not sure if this is normal. All and all, the picture is better than my $400 SVHS player, the features are many and easy to use.

Strength:

The minute I purchase the item, I was very eager to give it trial run with a DVD. I was impressed by the picture quality and by the sound that came from the small speakers located directly below the screen. Although, some small adjustment may be needed to obtain the superior picture quality I mentioned earlier. The sound is also acceptable granted the speaker are only two 28mm round speakers. The sound would be best optimized with the use of a pair of quality headphones.

Audio playback was flawless. I was especially pleased that the DVD player was able to play MP3 files.

Picture quality- B+
Sound quality- B
Sound quality with headphones- A-
Special features- A
Ease of use- A

All in all I would have to give this item a B+ to A-.

Weakness:

Some of the weaknesses I found were:

-Delayed loading time DVD and MP3. Approximately 25 seconds.

-Weight was a little heavy maybe 2lbs.
-Location of the volume controls may be better if located beside the play / stop / pause controls.

Never the less, I think one would be more than satisfied with the purchase of this item.

This is a SHARP PORTABLE DVD VIDEO PLAYER (DV-L88U). The product comes equipt with a 8" wide screen, one of the largest screens available.
