Strength:

fast response, unversal remote, 16x forwarding, best bargain

Weakness:

remote buttons kind of small

Nice silver finish color of both player and remote. Universal remote control allows for control with almost any tv made. Easy access to menu from toggle feature on remote
faster than the sd1700 made by the toshiba for a couple of bucks more zoom feature not that good but who really utilizes that feature. front display gives the time elapsed and it has a auto dim feature. I'm really not that technical but it just seems to work fast gotta love samsung.

Strength:

good picture, very good features, also is quiet, not like others dvds(sony)

Weakness:

so far so good.

i bought this dvd player like a month ago, and i havent had any problems with it. i think samsung is trying to change its reputation, cause i dont know about the older models, but this one rocks~~.And the price tag...wow..
trust me, if you dont want to spend a lot of money and want a reliable dvd player, buy this one or the newer models M401 or M501,...

Strength:

Video, Audio, remote control

Weakness:

Joystick pad on remote is sometimes unresponsive if not totally pointing one direction.

Haven't had much time to use it, but what I have seen so far is good. Video looks awesome and sound is great too. Deffinately your best bang for your buck. Haven't had a chance to play MP3's yet, but hopefully soon.

Strength:

Multiple active audio outputs, component video output, attractive design

Weakness:

None to speak of

So far a solid unit - playback is good with almost no pause during layer changes. Tried multiple difficult discs (T2, ID4, etc.) with no problems, running almost continously the first few days to hopefully shake out problems like I had with the Sony. Replacement for the Apex (couldn't play branching movies) and the Sony 560d (long layer change pause, couldn't read many discs, horrible tracking after a few months - see reviews of that model here). Hoping this one won't go downhill after a few months like the Sony.

Remote is not bad, I haven't had any difficulty using it like some people - just have to make sure the joystick "clicks" to register a command. Like the fact that normal audio output is active at same time SPDIF is active (except in dts playback) so I don't always have to turn on the stereo and can listen through the tv without reconfiguring it. MP3 playback is ok, no random play and the 8 letter filename seems pretty common on these devices. Also doesn't cut off the first and last second of the track like the Apex. MP3 playback is just a bonus anyway - this is primarily for movies. Haven't tried cd playback - that's what a cd player is for.

Overall a really good value for the money. Probably not as good as more expensive players, but you would expect more features for more money.

Feature set, check other reviews.

Weakness:

Video drop out and lock up. software seems to hang up at times

I too bought this player because of the Sound and Vision review. Unfortunately, my first experience was not so good. The player dropped video twice on a brand new copy of "Baby Boy" and straight out went buggy on "Planet of The Apes."

Baby Boy
During the movie I saw what I would describe as video drop out except it wasn't the whole picture. It appeared in the form of a pixelated black hole in the picture. I replayed that section but could not repeat the problem. Later on in the movie it happened again. Again, I replayed that section but could not repeat the problem. I watched the disc from the beginning and the same problem happened just at a different point in the movie.

Planet of the Apes
Again a brand new copy, but this time, well into the movie, the video froze for a few seconds. Of course I could not repeat this by replaying that section. I then decided to play the extras on the DVD and the video just schitzed. There is some kind of fancy animated graphics every time you select a disc option. Some of these animations played fine but others fumbled badly. They were jittery and inconsistent. I was able to repeat this problem with some regularity.

I was not so sure at first that the problems were stemming fom the player but after reading that some players read discs better than others, I was quick to blame the player. I will take this one back and try another. Perhaps I got a defective one. If these problems happen on the replacement I will try another brand.

I have a love/hate relationship with the remote. While I like the joystick, I find the stop, pause and play buttons a bit on the diminutive side. I think they could be a little bigger and lower on the remote.

Finally I think I will refer to the ConsumerReports review of DVD players when chosing another brand. I want one that has few problems playing discs with problems and layered discs. Nothing is more disturbing to me than playback problems.

Strength:

Plays CD-R, CD-RW (Yes, it does!), MP3, Headphone jack

Weakness:

Out of stock...

I don't own this one. Wanted to get it, but BestBuy was out of it, perhaps many people read the S&V review ofr it.

I tested it with headphones at the store and it played my CD-R, CD-RW and regular CDs very well. MP3 files played too, but I only tested with two tracks.

It seems to be well built and changes tracks fast enough (on CDs). I did not have a chance to test with DVDs, but will try to buy the unit when it comes back in stock.

Strength:

Excellant sound and features.

Weakness:

Video problems.

I bought this player because of the Consumer Reports review, and the fact that it was selling at a reasonably price. However, my experience with this unit has been rather poor. The player suffered from pixelation (video drop out) on at least 10+ of the DVDs I tried in the one month I had the unit. About ever other DVD had this video dropout problem. It got worse as the weeks went by.

I finally went back to Best Buy and exchanged it for another unit. This unit suffered form the same problem, and also wouldn't play about 2 out of 10 discs I had - even though the other same unit did!? (Note that the DVD's that the Samsung wouldn't play worked just fine on a Toshiba SD1700 unit that I bought for my parents).

Suffise it to say, I took the unit back and will not buy another Samsung unit again. If they can't make a consistant good product, they don't deserve my business.

Strength:

As many folks have said: plays MP3 CDr's! Good price vs. performance ratio.

Weakness:

Remote not the most intuitive, i prefer Sony's layout.

Basically, its a good second player to have for a bedroom or the such. The component out and optical/coax audio outs are great to have. The best thing, for me, is that it plays MP3 CDR's, i burned one cdr with 154 mp3's and it seems to play them without a hitch. One thing, and i know others have pointed this out: if you leave a cdr in the player and turn it on it wont recognize it. By simply ejecting and then closing the tray again, the DVD will read the cdr...takes about a minute. Weird little problem there though. Oh yea, the headphone jack is VERY loud and offers a clean, strong signal. I didn't notice and noise, hiss or humming from the jack. It drove my Sony MDR7506's with authority. When it comes down to it, its a great bargain player for the kids bedroom, or someone on a budget. Recommended!

Strength:

Price - good playback of DVDs & features Does play CDRWs & MP3s

Weakness:

pre-recorded audio cd playback has glitch - little clicks audible after 30 to 45 min of uninterrupted play

I've owned 2 months. This is 3rd sample. I took back the first 2 for the same audio cd flaw. All unopened boxes from sound advice. They were selling as after thanksgiving loss leader. Makes me wonder if they got special deal from manufacturer on flawed batch. Anyway, at this point for $89 I guess I'll keep and just add back my cd player to the system.
DVD playback has been good (though I've only used it about 20 times).

Strength:

* Price
* Looks
* MP3 Playback (VBR --r3mix, flawless)
* MP3 - Supports directories (folders/albums)
* MP3 - Shows Directory and track when playing back.
* Coaxial/Optical/S-video/Component outputs
* A+ Video/audio quality.
* Silent operation

Weakness:

* DOS-like 8 character limit/truncation on MP3 titles/directories
* Very bland (Again DOS-like) title screen on TV for MP3s (Make it look like Winamp a little Samsung)
* Joystick on remote (I'm afraid of breaking it off)
* Slow loading if all MP3s on root directory (better to have albums)
* No MP3 title/directory info on Player (not even truncated) just

See above.

If you want to play alot of MP3s on this device it's best to save it with the song title first as it will be truncated. Maybe Samsung will issue a firmware update.
