Strength:

I got asian model DVD-M108. Good quality, plays everything, nice slim looks.

Weakness:

None so far

I traded-in with my VCD player for US$55 less. I installed it in my bedroom. It works so well even with only my 21 inch Hitachi flat screen TV. I have yet to use it with my living room new entry-level HT system which comprises of:-

Hitachi 29" Flat screen TV
Robertson RAV9000 DD/DTS 5.1 100W AVR
Robertson RVD1000 DD/DTS DVD/VCD/CDR/MP3 multi-region player
Robertson MP-11 Two high front speakers
Robertson Center speaker
Robertson Two small rear speakers mounted on the wall
Wharfedale 8" active subwoofer

Strength:

model M101 - Plays all "Pressed" media, DVD's, Audio, VCD, etc. Good quality too.

Weakness:

Plays almost NO CD-R media!!!! (Audio CD's, VCD's, SVCD's). I have heard that the unit *may* play some brands of CD-R such as some Maxell (but it won't play my particular brand of Maxell, I don't know yet which ones work).

It plays all "store bought" media just fine, however, the laser seems very sensitive to dust and smudges on the disk (I put a new DVD in there, never touched - and it skipped twice in the movie due to very small little inperfections on the disk's surface). It plays store-bought audio CD's, and I believe it also plays "pressed" VCD or SVCD's.

I have yet to get this player to play anything at all on CD-R's, but I hear that it will play certain CD-R media. I may just forget it and never play CD-R's... it will probably be easier for me to just buy a totally different *better* unit to play my SVCD-R's.

Quality is good... but this isn't quite robust enough to my liking. So I rate it bad (but good for "normal" users - not good for "pirate" users like me : )

Strength:

good

My first experience with a dvd player. have watched about 6 movies on it and the quality seems very good using the S-Video output. HAve noticed several instances of picture breakup, and at one point the unit lost lip sync. Stopping and restarting cured this. Also on one movie, several times the scene jumped over several frames or more. So far I suspect scratched dirty discs but time will tell.

Strength:

Price, price, and price. Also many features including zoom.

Weakness:

remote - what else is new?

I've been looking for a DVD player as my final piece to my home theater system. I already have a nice AV reciever so I really didn't need the DVD to do the processing. I picked up the Samsung at Costco as a total impulse buy. I figured if I didnt like it I would just return it and would continue my search for the ultimate DVD.

Well, what more could I ask for? It goes forward, backward, zoom and my Av reciever does all the digital decoding. It works great. Best bang per buck? - perhaps, I guess it depends on what your looking for. Until I figure out what I'm missing on this unit, I'm a happy camper.

Strength:

Picture quality, features, price

Weakness:

Playback

I have been very happy with the video quality and audio playback, but very unhappy with the video playback. Maybe it's just this unit, but it seems VERY sensative to scratches or dust on the disk. I have maintained and cleaned the unit and disks very well, but when using a rented disk there is a 60% chance that it will have multiple skips and lock ups. New disks never have this problem. This tells me the laser must be very sensative in this model. If it weren't for that, I would be happy. I am definately going to trade up for a better model - not Samsung.

Strength:

solid player. no problems. good sound output. optical digital output. very inexpensive.

Weakness:

tiny visual glitches a couple of times

Was going to get the DVDM301 .. then realized i will never use my dvd player for mp3 or cdr anyway. the m101 is the same besides that.

The only hitch i have encountered is that twice while watching a dvd, for a second a line of boxes flashed near the bottom of the screen and cut the picture off. I dont know if this is caused by a scratch in the disk or the player itself, but either way it happened only twice for a second.

The sound output quality is very nice for my purposes. i have my klipsch promedia v2-400 computer speakers(both front speakers + subwoofer)hooked up to the analog stereo outputs and the sound quality is wonderful. Volume is tremendous and bass is extremely good. this is a really cheap way to get good sound if you have some powered speakers from your computer or elsewhere.(as long as you dont mind lack of 5.1/surround sound ouput).

the player has worked perfectly with all dvds i have tried besides the small visual glitch that happened twice that i mentioned above.

the remote control is also nice. i easy to find the buttons and not lacking any features i would want.

i am very happy with the purchase especially since it was among the cheapest that best buy had. i really recommend it.
