Strength:

Alot of features for the money. Sleek design.

Weakness:

Weak remote range.

Samsung must have worked out the bugs that many earlier reviews mentioned because mine has had no problems at all in the 6 months I have owned it. I use the dvi output and the picyure quality is quite good. It's not outstanding but this is not a high end unit. I also am into dvd audio /sacd. The fact that this unit has BOTH decoders for the money is almost unbelieveable. If your preamp has a 5.1 channel input get one of theese units. You will not be sorry...

Strength:

DVI output/cable incuded. For $95 it is tops: EZ set-up.. Sharp picture. Big theatre sound. Plays most types of disks.

Weakness:

Samsung needs to get better translators for its manuals. Fortunately they use excellent diagrams to describe the set-ups.

DVI set-up is simple. Took only minutes. Everything worked perfectly the first time. Primary use is playing DVD's to a Samsung DLP HDTV. Very nice improvement over component inputs for many DVD's. Big theatre sound. Love the THX "Audience is Listening" intro. Only $95US at Costco. The included universal remote is a bit feature laden - takes some practice - takes the place of at least two of my remotes. Build quality looks adequate. DVI cable included.

Strength:

Simple to install and configure dynamic switching to different resolutions without not having to stop movie

Weakness:

Remote control sucks, but in my case no big deal since I have it controlled bu my Philips Pronto universal remote

The HD 841 was easy to install, it worked on my first try. I have it connected to my Knoll HD177 Projector and i can pick 480p, 720p, 768p, or 1080i with great ease, so far no problems. My only concern was I cannot see a remarkable difference in quality with some DVDs, my suspicion is, the source, with some DVD upconverting does not help, while it doe shelp with others. Other than that, I great for the price

Strength:

Streamlined, Thin, simple

Weakness:

None found yet. (All remotes lack something)

Having recently purchased an entirely new home theater (seperate component items, not a "system") and having read reviews on the setup of the 841, I had no problem in getting the DVI output to operate. I also have not experienced any of the problems I have read about in the reviews posted here. My basic functional use of the 841 is playing DVD movies and have experienced No problems what-so-ever. Like one of the sayings on a TV sales show says, I "set it and forget it".

Do yourself a favor, and take my advise and don't get this DVD player. And the only way I can describe why in a way that all can understand is the DVD player is a lot like an psycho-ex, or your now current psycho girl/boy friend. Why do I say that? I'm glad you ask... First of all just like when you first met your crazy significant other, the first impression really counts. I mean this is how you got in this mess first of all, and honestly the Samsung DOES make a great first impression and that's how I got into this mess. I mean how could I deny a SACD, DVD Audio/Video DVD player with by the way DVI output for those who are looking to upgrade thier TV's some day and all that for the price tag of under $150 bucks. It just seem too good to be true. And it is. I got this baby home hooked it up and introduced it to the family, and thats when I realized I made a big mistake. All of a sudden it started doing its own thing. Loading when it wanted to load, skipping CD's that never skipped in any player EVER before. I tried having a talk to see if I could make things work out between us, but nothing change it kept doinig what it wanted to do. I knew I had to leave, before I found myself buying a ring and end up down the road in Wal-Mart buying APEX big-screens and Sanyo home theatre systems and actually thinking it sounds and looks good. So for your sake and your childrens sake if you bought it take it back, if you are thinking about buying it. Think about Yamaha, Onkyo, and Denon first.

Strength:

SACD and DVD-A capable with upconverting video through DVI.

Weakness:

Small buttons on the remote. But I'm switching to teach everything to a Sony universal 3100 remote

I bought this DVD HD841 after reading plenty of reviews and noting that I can always return it within 30 days at CC. I have it hooked up via VI to my Sony GW III and it works with no problem whatsoever. It appears that Samsung added a "DVI Hookup Sheet" in with the instructions telling you to attach component or composite cables as well as the DVI cable. The SACD works perfectly and is one of the main reasons I bought this unit. As most everyone knows you need to have 6 analog cables hooked up to the output to be able to hear all six encoded SACD channels. If you only use the optical or coaxial digital out you'll only hear two channels or if you are listening to DVD you'll hear 5.1 channels of DD or DTS. The DVD picture is fine but not overly impressive. My GW III upconverts everything to it's native resolution 768p (?)

I purchased this DVD player as I am heavily into HDCD, so having an HDDVD was gravy. I read all the other reviews only after I had purchased mine, and believe me I thought I had made a huge mistake. But after installing it and setting it up, it worked great. I can't believe all the other problems that were reported in the other reviews. The setup was very easy and for the money sounds great!! I encounterd no problems at all. Maybe I was fortunate and purchased one made on a Wednesday!! Please not the price I paid is in canadian $$

Strength:

Appealing bezel, good price for DVI output dvd player

Weakness:

DVI output doesn't work, cheap connectors, skips disks, touchy infrared on remote

I recently purchased the Samsung 841 for the price and for the fact it was one of the few DVI dvd players out that was under $200. Needless to say I will be returning it today. Unfortunately I read the feedback forums on this model after buying, and if I had read before purchasing, I would have never got this model. Here are the issues (some are already known): 1) Manual is horribly lacking - in order to configure the PSCAN - DVI feature, you have to hook up either component, s-video or composite connection first in order to even get to the dvd setup menu to choose this option 2) DVI hookup never did work - I have a 42" Sony PFM42V1S plasma that I was able to get the component working to change the dvd setup menu, however the DVI output would never sync at any resolution. All I kept getting is a solid blue blinking screen (this after using Vid Sel and DVI sel on remote). I tried both HDCP and non-HDCP disks to eliminate the possibility that my tv may have the issue - same results. 3) DVD's skip - I tried this with several dvd's that I know play fine ( I also own a Sony DAV-FC8 home theatre) and each one skips periodically through out. I have read previous forum reviews on this model and this is a known problem. NOTE: Samsung has issued a firmware upgrade for the 841 model that will auto-detect DVI input. I applied the firmware upgrade (which was very simple) but it made no difference. As far as looks go for this model, it is very appealing, smooth lines, not alot of clutter and I love the silver finish, however the thing simply just doesn't work. The picture with RGB component cables is satisfactory, but I get better quality picture thru my digital cable box on HD channels. The skipping of dvd's is unacceptable, and the only reason I bought it was for the DVI output, however since that doesn't even work properly, this unit is going back.

Strength:

Nice looking unit

Weakness:

Difficult setup and Defective Design

Very disappointing purchase. I have purchased Samsung products before and this unit is definitely not up to their usual standards. The unit was not intuitive or easy to set up; I found the remote to be poorly designed and finally, the unit seems to have an operating problem. I bought the HD841 or high definition DVD conversion. Connecting with DVI cable to a Sharp LCD TV yielded an OK picture but not noticeably different to the ordinaryToshiba DVD player used before. After less than a month the HD841 unit started acting up. Sometimes mysteriously, it would stop transmitting the optical-out sound signal. Sometimes the unit would have a read error take an eternity to eject a disk and then the tray suddenly opens with the DVD spinning merrily away. I returned the unit.

Strength:

The blue lighted display looks nice. It powers up consistently.

Weakness:

The DVI setup is lost each time the unit is powered off. The composite video output works better than the DVI output. Sound from 5.1 channel SACDs and DVD-audio is only output to front two speakers.

The HD-841 DVI function is not designed properly and must have the setup parameters re-entered everytime you turn it back on again. I was not that impressed with the DVI capability and found that I got a better picture using the composite video output. On the side of the HD-841 box it states that it plays 5.1 channel SACDs and DVD-audios in multichannel sound. This unit can not do what it is represented to do. I called the Samsung technical dept and they confirmed that the HD-841 can only play TWO of the SIX channels that should be output for SACDs and DVD-audio. It outputs sound for the front left and right speakers only. No sound is output for the center channel, the two surround sound rear channels, the subwoofer, or the rear center channel when SACDs or DVD-audio is played. The Hd-841 does output sound to all speakers when a DVD video disk is played. I have found the customer service center people at Samsung to be unresponsive. The tech people and service reps do not communicate. I got tired of the run around from Samsung and returned the HD-841. This turned out to be a blessing, because I bought a Pioneer 578a and it performs flawlessly compared to an HD-841. Do not waste your time and money on an hd-841 that can not do all of the functions it is supposed to perform.
