Strength:

It isn't made of play dough.

Weakness:

See the owners manual.

Uhhhhh...without sounding too fraternity: "this thing sucks!" It hesitates when playing audio CDs...actually does the same from time to time on DVDs, the remote is horrible (if it works), actually the remote seldom works at all. I paid 200 and recently found the Toshiba 2200 for 238. I haven't received it yet, but am guessing it will be night and day. The Samsung allegedly plays MP3s and although I haven't yet tried it, I would say it is suspect at best. I have a Denon AVR 681 (which according to Denon technical support has the EXACT SAME specs as the AVR 1601...if anyone knows/thinks differently, please inform me) receiver and Polk RM6600 surround speakers and am embarassed to have brought this DVD player home to work with these guys. Sorry to hammer you, Samsung, but this is reality.

Strength:

VCD, SVCD, CDR compatbility

Weakness:

MP3 not usable

Bought it for CDR compatibility [seems OK], and MP3 [un-usable]. Tried two different units -- both either skip during MP3 track playback or skip right to the next track. The outside of the box says 'MP3 Music Playback in CD/CDR', but the manual says nothing about mp3 [???]. On inserting an MP3, the display shows 'mp3', and a menu of tracks is displayed on the screen [so somebody sure intended it to work with mp3], but it just plain skips. Calling the USA Samsung support number, the folks there say it doesn't work with mp3, wasn't supposed to work with mp3 [???], the sales division doesn't know what they are selling [that's a quote], and don't bother sending it back for repair as they all work that way. Wonderful. [S]VCD with CDR seems fine, but if you want MP3 as well, make sure you can take it back.

Weakness:

after several movies the player would not play a whole movie without a problem

the player was returned to best buy after a week because it would not play a full movie without a problem. I purchaced a pioneer dv 333 instead. it doesn't have all the features that the samsung 711 has but it plays movies all the way through with out any problems. Because it didn't work as advertised I'm changing my review.

Strength:

PRICE. Looks, Jog control, zoom.

Weakness:

HEAT!!!

I bought this item, only because it was the only sub-$300 unit they had left that wasn't complete garbage. It was also an open-box item. Regular price $199, $20 instant rebate, $50 off for the box being opened. So far, I've only watch one movie, ROAD TRIP. No extremely intense graphics scenes. And what do I get?

About half way through the movie the things starts skipping and locking up like mad. I got up to check the disk, and it was fine but the player was extremely hot. I did have my DirecTV receiver sitting on top of it, so that may have been the problem. I removed the receiver and finished the rest of the movie with no problems whatsoever. I'll try Gladiator tonight.

I happen to like the remote. Although, I should've bought a Sony so I could use one remote for the DTV, VCR, DVD, and TV. Oh well, maybe next time.

Strength:

Great picture, sound, appearence, amount of features.

Weakness:

none so far...

This Christmas my family received two DVD players, one for the family (Pioneer DV-333) and one for my myself (Samsung DVD-711). After reading the other reviews for the Samsung, I was completely shocked, issues of skipping, overheating, bad picture, bad sound, etc. were all that was mentioned.

I find that the Samsung DVD-711 DVD player is an excellent player. I've only had one problem with skipping, which was from "Big Momma's House" which I rented from Blockbuster that had scratches on it. This was the ONLY dvd I've had problems with. But, when it comes to skipping with mp3 cds, I have not tried playing an mp3 cd, so i'm not sure if it works or not. I have played normal music CDs on it, and they play fine, with no skipping or anything.

Anyways, about picture quality and sound. I am just using the standard A/V cables that came with it, and the picture and sound are both GREAT! I haven't experienced any delayed sound, etc. or anything negative that was mentioned in other reviews. When compared to the Pioneer DV-333, i'd say the sound quality and picture are equal to that of the Samsung. Which comes to some suprise, since the Pioneer retails for a little more, and has far less features.

Regarding overheating, yes, i admit. The Samsung does tend to get a little on the hot side, but it hasn't affected it's performance at all. However, I've also noticed that all the DVD players that I've tried tend to get just as hot, if not hotter. The pioneer dv-333, sony (msrp $250), sony (msrp $300), and a Samsung computer DVD drive all seem to run at about the same temp. So I don't believe it's really an issue. The remote is another plus, the buttons are large enough to read, the control stick makes it easy to navigate through menus, and it replaces my tv remote.

With the excellent picture quality, excellent sound quality, great remote, nice looking menus, amount of features the Samsung DV-711 stacks up pretty well against other dvd players of higher price. I recommend it to anyone who is looking to purchase an affordable DVD player, expects the same features and quality of a higher price player.

Strength:

Sleak design, component output, Remote control style and feel.

Weakness:

Brand new DVDs would skip and stall.

I am a 20 year old college student who decided to get my parents and brothers and sisters living at home into the dvd realm this christmas with a fairly inexpensive model. My parents are not audio/videophiles so all that was really needed was a DVD player capable of simply playing DVDs. I did my research carefully because when you are a college student every penny counts. I read consumer reports and it recommended this model as a best value. So I decided to purchase the Samsung dvd711 over other brands similarly priced including toshiba, pioneer and sony.
The first few movies that I watched on my DVD 711 were American Beauty, Dogma, The Patriot, and Any Given Sunday. They all went through with very few or no skips which pleased me immensely and the few times the player did skip I just said "I can live with that".
My first problem hit when I tried to watch Scary Movie. I put the disc in and the player totally stalled at the Disc Menu. I pushed stop and played the movie w/out accessing the Disc Menu and the movie played relatively flawlessly. I had already watched the movie on both my PSX 2 and computer and knew it was the hardware. I didn't really think much else of the problem. The next day I watched Being John Malkovich and every ten seconds the picture would stall, but the audio would remain on track, then the picture would catch up. This gets frustrating watching a whole movie this way. I put in Chicken Run after the movie was finished and it stalled near the end. I stopped and jumped to the scene were it left off and after three times the movie proceeded with few skips.
Reindeer Games and Boiler Room both performed perfectly.
The next night I watched two more movies. I started off with The Perfect Storm and the movie played perfectly right up until scene 17 (when their fishing boat's ice box breaks) After several attempts to restart the film failed I decided to put in Three Kings which perfomed perfectly until scene 23 (they are trying to save Mark Walburgs character). Again I could not continue the movie so I called it a night after watching half of two movies that I had never seen before. I finished the rest of the movies in the confines of my small computer room and on a relatively smaller (19 inch monitor) and less comfortable.
It took a while for me to truly give up on my DVD player I continued to try to use it and during a few movies the player would always stop right in the middle, but I don't know if it is the dual layer?? even though I had no trouble with other movies that too were dual layered. I tried to watch Road to El Dorado w/ my little brother (It sucks trying to explain why the movie pauses in the middle to a four year old especially when I don't have a clue myself.) Heat and Frequency also paused and then said Dvd can not be read.
All of the DVDs that I used were from my own collection that I take exceptional care of and in most cases were merely opened and inserted straight into the dvd player with no chance of a finger print or even dust to contaminate the surface.
I believe that DVD players have been around long enough to have most of these major problems taken care of even if the player is a "low end model" Many people including myself seem to give the DVD player the benefit of the doubt too often. Many people reviewed saying " the only trouble I have had is on a disc I rented and it was probably scratched" If you have to worry about every dvd having minor scratches now when they are brand new what good is the enhanced picture dvd offers if a disc will be unusable when it get a single scratch? I know that DVDs and CDs are not the same but their technology is very similar and I have come across many CDs that the playing surface is nothing but one big scratch and it still plays flawlessly. That is my main point that I wanted to get across. I was told on the phone to samsung that it was probably the disc and I questioned then if I want to settle for a dvd player that you need to question whether your straight out of the box movie is too scratched for the player. I would not recommend this player to anyone unless they only like half of many movies.

Movies that gave me no trouble (even on the second or third viewing):
Boiler Room, Reindeer Games, American Beauty, Any Given Sunday, Dogma and Gladiator
Movies that gave me a few skips, but made it through the whole movie:
The Patriot, The Matrix, Scary Movie, Being John Malkovich, and Chicken Run.
Movies that paused in the middle and wouldn't restart:
The Perfect Storm, Three Kings, The Road to Eldorado, Heat, Frequency, The Sound of Music.

The preceding was only what actually happened to me and this is my opinion of the player. I had only the highest hopes for this player or else I would not have purchased it so I am not posting this as slander against Samsung products this is just my experience. Use your own judgement and use me as one who has actually had experience with the DVD player.

Strength:

had a nice, "new electronics" smell out of the box

Weakness:

there simply isnt enough space on the internet to list them all

well, it smelled good out of the box...you know, that nive new electronics smell? When the DVD's came out of the machine (at about 400 degrees---CELSIUS) they also smelled nice and warmed my hands on cold winter nights. The machine itself could be used as a space heater for a small dorm room. It says 'hello' and 'goodbye' to me, so like the other guy who mentioned this, I actually feel like I'm hurting it's feelings when I swear at it also.

OH, YOU MEAN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO PLAY DVDS??

Strength:

shiny.. plays cd-r, vcd, cd, dvd, affordable.

Weakness:

not quite sure yet

Just bought this VERY recently. After reviewing all the reviews, I thought twice about keeping this product, but so far, it hasn't failed me yet. DVD works fine, VCD movies also run crystal clear, and plays even CD-R vcds. I've put in audio cd just to try out its "skipping" problem, but haven't run into it yet. MP3 is no concern to me since I don't have it. Maybe half of the 711 on the market is defective? Anyways, no complaints here.. yet.
