Strength:

Good picture quality when working. Good sound. Easy to use remote.

Weakness:

Skip, Skip, Skip, Skip, Skip

It skipps constantly. First I thought it was the DVD's, but every movie I rented, the player skipped a few frames. Very frustrating. When working, good pictures and sounds-but this is expected from any DVD player. I must have the lemon. I don't recommend this player.

Strength:

Abundant features, cheap price, attractive design

Weakness:

Skipping on many disks, the Matrix problem, doesn't play some CD's

This thing sucks! Should have bought a Japanese brand. Was attracted by its look, features and price, but regret now. Had to take to a designated shop to upgrade firmware for the Matrix problem and got the chasis scratched! The worst problem is skipping and occasional freeze. At first thought could live with the skipping but got the point of annoying. Doesn't seem to have any disk that doesn't skip. Remote design seems somewhat awkward. Doesn't play CD-Rs. Being generous giving it 3 out of 5.

Strength:

Price/value for money, ease of use/simplicity

Weakness:

runs a little hot, layer transition a bit sluggish, occasionally picture freezes for about 1/2 a second (occurs an average once per 2 movies played)

I was originally going to buy a Sony unit until a friend of mine said that on his Sony player the audio and video go out of synch after the movie plays for a half hour or so. I figured for the money I was able to spend on a player, I would pick a more reliable lower end brand like Samsung, whose products usually get good reliablity reviews in Consumer Reports.

I payed $200 for this player and have owned it for about 4 months now, and I am very satisfied with it. I have had no problems with audio/video sych, or any other major problems. The first DVD I watched was the Matrix, and it played beautifully. My unit was manufactured 99.12 so apparently Samsung has fixed whatever problems they had with this model. I get an occasional picture freeze that lasts no longer than a second, but this only happens occasionally. The layer transition is sluggish at times. For some reason, my Hunt For Red October disc takes about 4 or 5 seconds to switch layers. Other discs usually take a second or two. Of course, I did expect this from any player under $200 so I'm not too upset. You get what you pay for!

It does run a bit hot after only a short time, I didnt know until reading the other reviews today that this was a trademark of this player. I played a 40 minute audio cd the other day and the cd came out of the player very hot to the touch. However, I have not noticed any problems because of this. In fact many of the movies I own are well over 2 hours (Eyes Wide Shut: 2 hrs 45 minutes, Aliens director cut: 2 hours 30 minutes, Spartacus: 3+ hours!) and I have yet to have the player go belly up on me in the homestretch. I also havent noticed any problems with skipping, but then as an avid vinyl album collector I am in the habit of taking care of my discs.

I happen to like the simple boxy design of the unit...I have a 5 year old Sony receiver which is equally as boxy so it fits well into my entertainment center decor! It plays audio cd's nicely...In fact this player has since replaced my Sony disc changer, the sound quality is a bit better.
I like the fact that there is a feature called "Dynamic Compression" which balances out the colume level a bit so if youre going from a quiet scene to a loud one it wont scare the hell out of you, and you dont have to keep adjusting the volume level on your stereo.

The remote is cool, I love the little joystick! However since I have eight thousand remotes laying around I dont use it, I use a universal. Which leads me to another point- It is very hard to find a universal that works correctly with Samsung DVD players since its not as big a name as Sony or Panasonic. After some shopping around and a lot of returned remotes I use the One For All "Cinema 6" Remote" (model URC-6800B00). Its 20 bucks and works almost all of the DVD's features, and for the ones it cant, it is able to learn 4 new functions per device. Save yourself a headache and hours of shopping around: take my word on getting this remote!

Overall I am satisfied with this product and would recommend it to others! I paid 200 for it but have now seeen it selling for around 160. Well worth the money! The best thing for me is no more rewinding tapes!! Yippee!!!

Strength:

Very affordable, and easy to use.

Weakness:

Will not play certian movies, like The Matrix.

This is a very affordable player that is user friendly. It's only flaw is that it needs a fimware upgrade to play some movies. The Matrix will not play at all without this upgrade, but Samsung is offering it for free as long as it is under warranty. Suprisingly the upgrade was not a hassle to get, and I got my player back in a few days. If you let it go out of warranty it will cost about $60.00. Mine works flawlessly now that I have had the upgrade installed. Overall I think it is a good player, at a very good price.

Strength:

Nice picture and really cool remote

Weakness:

No Component Output

Charles Zimmerman I absolutely wouldn't recommend Playstation 2 for DVD playback, it absolutely is false advertisement by there part because I received a PS2 from Japan and it doesn't have the quality they promised. They compared it to players like the Sony Reference Standard and Progressive Scan players and claimed it performed admirably.I found the player to be below average and the glitches that many have spoken about. Better buy a standalone and be safe.

The Samsung is and excellent performer and would highly recommend it over Sony's overhyped garbage Playstation 2. The picture and sound are way above average and the remote is much better than any I've used. The player is slick looking because it's simple and doesn't have a ton of buttons on the front panel to confuse you. Highly Recommended for a beginner player.

Strength:

Like everyone here said, it has a great remote. The onscreen features are impressive and very easy to use.

Weakness:

None noticed yet.

Before I bought my player ($120 refurbished at an onsale.com auction), I read most of the reviews here. Almost all of the negative reports mentioned the need for an upgrade to play intense movies like the Matrix. Mine must have had it--no problems.
A great dvd player for the casual user.

Strength:

Easy to operate using the "joystick"

Weakness:

No 5.1 channel outputs

I received my Samsung 709 as a "freebie" part of a home theater package from Hifi.com. I have yet to experience any trouble playing rental or new DVDs. One of the first things I did was buy "The Matrix" because I had heard all about the trouble other people were having with it. I've played "The Matrix" and everything was fine. I have yet to experience any skipping either.

Considering this is my first DVD player, it is totally acceptable to me. It has great basic features that anyone can operate.

Overall, good product for the price.

Doesn't play CDs as nicely as a CD player.
