Strength:

Very reliable; DTS and DD out; 2 Toslink FO Outs;

Weakness:

No component video outs; No digital coax outs; has trouble playing all-region discs; boring, archaic options interface.

I've had this player for well over a year, and it has read every disc I've thrown at it, except for two, both of which were all-region import discs such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (I didn't expect them to read anyways). Very simple to get running, very good remote. The options interface is rather boring though. While it has all of the basic options such as audio compression and screen format selection, navigation can be a pain for some. The other problem with this machine is the lack of outputs; there is no component video OR digital coax outputs. I've heard horror stories of some low-end disc players, about how they stop working after a short period of time, and I've had no such problems with this one. All in all, for the money I've spent on it, I couldn't be happier.

Strength:

It plays all my DVD's.

Weakness:

It didn't play the defective Man With The Golden Gun, but MGM repressed the disc and now it works.

People, people. For those of you experiencing low volume disc output, check the compression setting at the players menu. This has even been mentioned at amazon.com with reviews for this model. Check it out.

I'm now the 'Proud' owner of my 3rd RC5220P DVD unit.

The first one, new out of the box, displayed 'No Disc' when trying to play DVD. Although not recommended, I could get it to read a DVD if I hit the top of the unit just at the right time during initial DVD spin-up.

Sent it in for a replacement.

The 2nd unit had the same 'No Disc' problem and it could not be remedied by striking the top of the DVD unit.

Sent the second in for replacement.

The 3rd unit has the same 'No Disc' problem, but I have found that if I power the unit off between DVD movie watching, the unit will read the DVD upon restart. My 90 day warranty is up so I have resolved to be satisfied with what I have.

When working I am happy with the player, but I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

Everything About it

IT sucks, it won't even turn on anymore after 2 months. We've sent it back twice! I finally bought a new one and took apart the old one to try to fix it. All of the contacts are completely corroded covered in a white film that looks like battery acid. RCA sure sux at building these things. Don't buy it!!!

I have to confess that I only bought this player because I ran out of money after buying the rest of my Home Theater which I won't go into because I'm here to talk abouth this DVD Player.
For the money it's a darn good player, it has many features and a very good performance both in video and sound quality, though I hate the fact that it dosen't have a coaxial digital output, these sound consistently better that toslink optical, but I guess you can't ask for everything in this price range. The only glitch I've found is that it has a hard time with dual-layeres discs, it freezes sometimes when it has to switch layers, but bo to worry since there are less than a 100 movies out there in such a format.

For the money I have to give it 5 speakers, though I have to say that I'm buying a player with a coaxial output ASAP, if sound is a really big deal to you as it is to me, get a player with the aforementioned output, if it's not then this is for you.

Outputs

I bought this last night at Best buy and found to my amazement that the issues other people are having - dual layer disk problems and the like - are not present on my unit. I tried three titles - The Matrix, Replacement Killers and Heat, all of which worked fine. The only real issue that I do have is the fact that this unit has Macrovision, causing all types of annoyances. I had to go get an RF Modulator (my TV does not provide RCA or S-Video connections) and reroute my entire connection scheme for my A/V equipment. I like the onscreen menus, the front pannel dimming (or completely off) feature, and I'm falling in love with the remote. I do however wish that it was a universal...... Anyway for the $200 asking price I convinced myself that it was worth buying this and 3 movies instead of going ahead and getting the Toshiba or the much maligned Samsung models. I think I made the right choice.....

My rating for value is 5 - there is no better value in DVD players out there. I mean think of it this way - A middle/lower class HI-FI VCR, or a very capable DVD? I chose wisely....

As far as Overall rating, the outputs and that fact that I had to buy the RF Modulator (therefor hurting the potential of the picture) makes the RCA get 4 stars.

Bought like other review at "Office Depot" before Christmas. Retail value $299 got for $149 NEW Get the 5 free DVD's and 12 Netflix rentals the bargian is too good to pass up and was hard to get when they were selling them. Setup was no problem to go with other video system, vcr's and video controller. Extra link video cable worked out great right into back of TV set and the other 3 joined lines worked out good right into video controller since never bought a lazer disc player till now "DVD's" This is the way to go and later when build up collection and price drops on the Multi-Players 200 disc and more mfg's get into it I'll be ready for one of those also.

Strength:

extreamly affordable.

Weakness:

No chapter display on front panel

So there it was,.. the RC5220P. It was right beside two other dvd players. I couldn't believe the price. And it was on sale listed for $ 369. Please note that I live in Canada. The 2 players beside it were both over $600. Made the Rca dvd player almost a steal compared to the others.

What made me happy was the fact that it had both DTS and Dobly Digital. So before I knew it I had it in my car and I was on my way home.

When I got home to try it out I found the picture just absolutly beatitful. I was in love. And for the time being I am just using a sony stereo amp with a pair of 732 mission speakers. The Cd sound is great and give me a week and I will be over to get a digital receiver and the appropriat speakers to go.

If you are thinking about purchasing the one. The picture is great and the sounds is well I will let you know when I get the Dobly digital up and going. But I'm totally confident I made a geat buy.

What you might find interseting is compared to VCR's this dvd player is almost in the same price bracket and look what you get !!!

access to dts playback

I was amazed at what $200 could buy.I was expecting a major drop in quality from my PanasonicA310, but this unit actually has features I had never sen before. Besides typically excellent DVD pict. and sound the unit has a headphone output with a volume control! The remote is 2nd to none. The only true disappointment is the ff and reverse. I'm used to 25x up and back-this unit cant go nearly as fast.BUT it can frame up and frame back which was a major MUST in my book. It seems no player has a zoom AND frame up/back capability. Must be hard to do technically.
