Strength:

Outstanding picture quality; handles "difficult" discs without a hitch

Weakness:

Menu navigation a bit slow

An outstanding value. This player has a top-notch picture, and you can't tell a dual layer disc without looking at the box. It handles the layer changes without as much as a hiccup. Good remote, good build construction. This player is head and shoulders above others in its price range. If you can still get your mitts on one of these, I highly recommend it.

Strength:

Superb picture, Best Sound, best looking with the metallic
color, and the yellow backround in the lcd looks great.

Weakness:

No VCD it is not MultiCoded for other countries

I have purchased Proscan DVD and I just love it , it looks
great, sound great, and plays great. I never had any troubles with it , so what the others said in this discussion board I would have to disagree with them.
If you get a chance to buy this DVD , then you defintely should, I know I would.

Strength:

1. Color. Something besides black is nice.
2. Monster Cable option. How many times have you spent $500+
on a component that gives you standard, BUNK, composite cables??!
3. Smaller unit size. May not match you component stack but
efficient use of space in the design of this DVD player.
4. Mint picture quality!
5. Price!
6. Component outputs.
7. Dim option of front display and buttons.
8. Thanks PROSCAN for the spare telephone wire! Bonus!

Weakness:

1. Disk noise can be bothersome at times however I listen to
movies loud.
2. Provided S-VHS cable isn’t too great. Monster Cable S-VHS 3 grade cable is a MUST for all out there! GET IT!
3. Menu display colors! What is up here!
4. Lame screen savers. Poor quality!
5. Reverse tracking while in play mode (on jog) TERRIBLE!
6. Remote is big and cheap looking.
7. DIVX option and DIVX print on face plate is SO LAME!

Great little unit here! It may have a thing or two about it that may set you off a bit but hey, give it some time and it will become a little friend. For the price, a person can’t complain! You could spend more on a DVD player however unless you have a serious set-up, you’re wasting you money. I have many miles of movies on this player and haven’t had a problem
besides an occasional audio jump due to a scratch on the disc. I am 100% happy with my purchase of this player. I think it would serve 90% of the DVD FREAKS out there just fine!

Strength:

Bargain price for quality, excellent picture, nice remote

Weakness:

Remote should have more backlight buttons, would've liked ability to go to specific time in movie

Wow. A great DVD player, even if it does have the DIVX logo on the front. This player is almost totally free from layer change problems, bad syncing, etc. As good as the very best players, but for a fraction of the price. Get one of these at Circuit City for a steal at about $250 -- they were $449 but are being sold for $249 because DIVX is dead. Monster Cables are even included.

I couldn't be happier.

Strength:

Flawless layer changes, great picture, good build quality/looks

Weakness:

Runs hot, remote could be improved

Great player at a budget price. The only playability problem I've had was with a well worn rental disk of "Gremlins". The onscreen menu is user friendly and works well. The remote is slightly cumbersome, but not too bad once you get used to it. The player transport buttons on the remote should be backlit, but are not. This is a nice looking unit, built well, and has nice features for the price. It does seem to run a little hot (ejected disc is pretty warm!), and remains warm even with the power off. Anybody else with this problem? This is a great player for a first time and/or buyer on a budget.

After reading a number of reviews (here and elsewhere) I decided to give this player a closer look. I'll admit I was a bit hesitant to go into a Circuit City (let alone buy anything there!) but I wanted to see what it looked like in person. Like some of the others that have posted here, I found a great deal on this player - $199.00.
My most recent player had been a Toshiba 3109, and the downconversion (on a Sony 35") was driving me crazy. Jagged lines and artifacts seemed to show up all over the place with the 3109. After doing an A-B comparison on a few scenes that had given me trouble on the Toshiba, I discovered that the Proscan does a *much* better job of downconversion than the 3109.

It certainly doesn't have as many bells and whistles as the 3109, but at this point I'll take better video performance over an on-screen bit meter and enhanced black level any day!

One point to note....I saw that someone else mentioned the annoying front display when playing discs. In the setup menu, you can turn the display off (the buttons go dark, and the LCD window is significantly dimmed). Looks a lot nicer that way in a dark room!

Really the only downside I can see to this player is the "DIVX" logo on the front. But now that DIVX is dead, that's not really an issue anymore....

Strength:

Great average CD player, nice looks

Weakness:

None

I've owned this DVD player since 1999 and I had no problems with it to date. I've read a lot of reviews on this machine and I was suprised. First I'd like to say that this machine as basic in nature and you get what you pay for. It works fine and has all the extras one would need. The divx function worked fine when it was available and I for one liked the features of divx as I hate to now have buy my DVD's for that $20.00 plus dollar price range for movies that I either have already seen or only watch maybe 3-5 times. Now that divx is gone my player is still like the rest of the basic DVD players, just as good. I've had no problems playing any DVD or CD disk. I read a lot of the reviews that are complaining about items like noise, construction and features. But what are they really complaining about, to me they want $500.00 plus quality out of a bargan machine that most people paid no more than $200.00 for back in 1999. Divx refunded me $100.00 when divx fell thru and now I still have my basic DVD player that I have no problems with and it cost me a total of $100.00, go figure. I personelly know that if I want no noise, great motor, top quality picture, the best sound, then I won't be buying a $200.00 DVD player.

Weakness:

doesn't work!

I bought this product about a year ago at a bargain price because of the divx fiasco. I came across this site LOL while looking for an authorized repair shop. I may have played, oh about 20 - 30 DVDs since purchasing it. Suddenly, it won't read the disc. Looks like quite a few other irate reviewers have experienced the same problem. Didn't proscan test this product before unleashing it on the unsuspecting public? Does proscan-rca honestly think that I am going to buy another one of their products? I've tried unplugging it and a few other things suggested on the proscan/rca website without any luck. Wonder how much it will cost to repair this turkey.........

Strength:

Good overall DVD player, nice remote for DVD which I think is better than most DVD remotes, the menus during movie playback are more intuitive than most other DVD players

Weakness:

Often the remote will lose the codes that I have programmed to work with other equipment, occasionally unit freezes until it is unplugged, feel I was scammed into getting a stupid DIVX player (why would I get a unit that only one place sells anyhow? oh well...)

I've really had very little problems with the player. It has frozen on me twice until I unplugged and replugged in the system, but this hasn't happenned in quite a while. The only DVD I had a problem with is the Ghostbusters DVD when using commentary track with the enhanced pictures of the makers of the movie during playback. The video of the people flickers quite badly when this is turned on, although it isn't that big of a deal really.

The only issue I really have is that I feel stupid to have bought a player with the DIVX feature when less than a month later they discontinued it. I still can't believe I bought it when deep down inside I knew that DIVX was a dumb idea when the saleman was trying to get me to buy it instead of a standard player. Still, I did get a good rebate when the DIVX fell under.

Strength:

Good video quality. Great value for features at the time.

Weakness:

With all the features, it still lacks in features I want like dosen't play mp3's or cdr's

Over all I like my DVD player. Have not had any problems with it. I've seen some of the other people's problems, but I guess I was lucky to get a good player. I'll keep this one till it finally craps out.
