Strength:

LD/DVD combo is a nice feature.

Weakness:

Durability. Pioneer doesn't appear to be very customer satisfaction oriented. Very noisy unit.

After using my DVL-700 for 3 years, I have been pleased with the audio and video from this unit. Recently the unit has been taking a very long time to start reading dvds, if it reads them at all. I have requested goodwill assistance from Pioneer with no luck. I believe that a product that costs $1100 should have much more than a 3 year usable life. I am rather disappointed in Pioneer's level of customer service.

Strength:

Good video performance. Both DVD and LD compatible

Weakness:

Slow, first generation, not DTS compatible

THis is a good player. Its old and out of date but still good for 1st generation play. It has been replaced by much better and cheaper players that will do DTS now. If you can find this player for cheap pick it up for both LD and DVD compatibility.

Strength:

all in one,reliable

Weakness:

Hard to say

I have had this dvl-700 for close to three years. I bought it new so I payed full price in 1997. I have and still use it atleast 4 to 5 hours a day. It gets the full workout from cd's to both laserdisc and dvd's(this is every day!).I love it.I think for its era it does a outstanding job. I have heard people state many different things about its age. Well it was the mold for all that we enjoy today and pioneer hasn't seem to stray from it yet. In my closing I will add...It is like man's best friend but better,I don't have to feed it,walk it or bathe it. Just keep playing with it and it plays back.

Strength:

great LD,DVD and CD player combo. Cool remote

Weakness:

nothing really

I love this combo unit! It does it all. The sound quality is great on all 3 functions. I am not a big pioneer fan , but i have to say that i love this unit that pioneer has made. I bought this unit used so i took a chance on buying it without knowing its history. I guess i got lucky because everything on it worked well. IF YOU EVER GET A CHANCE TO PICK ONE UP CHEAP, GET IT! I promise you will be satisfied.

Strength:

Great picture quality, great remote, easy to use, excellent solution for dvd/laser disc combo player

Weakness:

No DTS support, age

I bought this player to replace my old Pioneer S104 laser disc player which worked great but I like to upgrade. The picture quality of the player was great and is an awesome laser disc player and very good dvd player. The remote is easy to use and has every button you could possibly need for the function you want the player to do. The player is an older model though and of the over 100 movies I have played on it during the time I've owned it, I found three that wouldn't work: Any Given Sunday, Art of Fighting (anime), and The Living Daylights which might mean some of the other James Bond Movies might not work either. Has all the outputs of the standard players but becase of its age, only support Dolby Pro Logic or Dolby Digital movies, not DTS Support. This is no big deal if you are mainly looking for an upgraded laser disc player or don't mind not being able to try the DTS sound features on the few dvds that offer it. Bottom line, this is a great solution for anyone looking to support their old laser collection, while offering a very good dvd player built into the same machine. This player can also be found very cheap on ebay for anyone looking for a good combo player.

Strength:

durable workhorse, great DVD and LD solution with good video and DD 5.1 capability

Weakness:

No DTS, won't play the Matrix right, no component video out, kinda noisy like all LD players

Bought this unit as a demo marked down to $567 at Best Buy. My other Pioneer LD had broken down, so I needed a solution that looked ahead (DVD) while preserving my LD investment. I run the unit on optical out for sound and SVHS for pic, and it works like a champ. I haven't had any problems with the unit, and Pioneer has been good about sending me a new remote and a manual when I needed them. It's been over 2 years now without any mechanical issues. The Matrix is a new double-layered CD that the Pioneer has problems with, but it is a first generation problem I can live with since I have the Sony multi-disk player to run DVDs too.

Strength:

great sound/picture quality. Plays DVDs + CDs, but also a great laserdisc player.

Weakness:

can't show "blacker than black" for Video Essentials calibrating.

This is a great, inexpensive combo player (DVD/CD/Laserdisc). Both the DVD and CD playback is top-notch, but the laserdisc quality is truly superb. Hands-down the best laserdisc player I've ever seen.

If anyone is "switching" from LD to DVD or is looking to get into LD to supplement their DVD collections (and pick up titles like Star Wars, Fantasia, Braveheart, and others not available on DVD) -- this is the player to get.

Strength:

Affordable, Great play of LD, have played many DVDs with no problems, including recent releases like Shrek & Hannibal

Weakness:

None that I have detected yet.

I had been seeking such a player for some time, and jumped at the chance to buy it. I also bought shortly after a stack of LD's and already owned some DVDs I was playing on my computer. I do not have a great set up, but I have tested this unit with fairly good Maganvox TV and it worked perfectly. So far I have played most of my DVD collection in the player, including several James Bond DVDs, Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition, Free Enterprise, Seven (special edition), Abyss (Special Edition) and The Family Man. I have also rented Shrek & Hannibal and used most of the their features. I have detected no real problems. On the Hannibal disc, I detected very slight pixelization near the end of the film, but it was so small, and so slight, I almost missed it. Other than a lack of DTS (which doesn't matter to me), I really can't find fault with the unit. The only slight drawback was having to order the remote and manual through a Pioneer dealer and putting out extra money (I paid $200 for the player, plus another $100 for the remote and manual.). Overall a great unit!
