Strength:

five disc feature

Weakness:

unreliable product

I was given the DVD Pioneer DV-C603 as a gift in January 2001. It did not work. Neither the CD or DVD player worked. I returned it immediately and was provided a replacement. The replacement CD player stopped working after approximately eight months, and the store refuses to exchange it without the receipt. I was told by the store rep that the CD player will not play writable discs, that's not the problem, it doesn't play any CD! My son has a Panasonic DVD player for two years and he hasn't had a single problem with his, and it plays writable discs too. (My son thinks the store rep just said that, and this Pioneer is suppose to play any CD.) The store wants me to pay $28+ to send it for repair after less than ten months of use! Also, the nearest service center is 10 miles away. (Which by the way, is important that the readers know what support they will have if they have a problem, and how far it is.) You're dealing with an unstable product with poor support service. It's best to stay clear!! (I'll keep an eye out if the truth is posted! Then I'll know if I should reply on sites like this at all.)

Strength:

Plays all formats when it plays...

Weakness:

It doesn't work.

After a month long wait in the repair shop, I called the place and they handn't even looked at the thing. I next called Pioneer who gave me the runaround for another month before I started threatening to go to the BBB or the press. They finally informed me that their experts said the unit is un-repairable and they then offered me a "refurbished" unit. I told them to "kiss my a$$" as I'd paid good cash for a new DVD player, the one they sold me originally is dead and I want a new or or a refund.

As you might expect they've refused to give me anything but someone else's dead and possibly repaird unit. Bottom line is folks, this DVD player is fine, when it works, when it doesn't it's a piece of chit. Pioneer's service is less than minimal it's criminal. When it breaks you'll wait long months for no repair with no loaner in sight. My advice to anyone even considering this machine is not to buy it, if for no other reason than if you ever need service, you're screwed.

Strength:

Play's any format, when it plays.

Weakness:

DVD eat's CD's, DTS audio cuts in and out, Audio cuts in and out.

Please forgive my first review of this product. It was done too early in my ownership of this machine. Within a month of ownership the player began to eat CD's and DVD's. They dislodge from the tray and get stuck inside the machine. Tray then refuses to close as it jams on the CD. I was forced to remove the player and shake it till the cd's came out.

After that the machine ran well until DTS signal's stop transmitting. CD's would play fine, so would DVD's in PCM but no DTS 5.1 signals would transmit. What the h*** do you think I bought the thing for?

Now as, if that wasn't bad enough, the all sound cuts out on the machine DVD and CD's. I'm 2 inches from throwing the god**n thing in the Hudson. Call tech support they say pack the thing up and ship it or drive 97 miles away to the nearest service center. So then I'll be without music and DVD's for weeks till it gets fixed, if it gets fixed.

I should have listened when a friend told me they started selling this crap at BJ's warehouse, that's what this thing is definately crap.

You've been warned.

Strength:

Low price. Progressive scan, 5-disc changer, digital output. Plays DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW. MPEG output.

Weakness:

Remote control. Does not always recognize disc. No smooth fast forward.

This DVD player offers many features at a comparatively low price. The picture quality using the component outputs played on a 480p TV is outstanding.

I have used this machine for about 2 weeks and will be returning it because of the problems I found. At least half the time it does not recognize a disc inserted (DVD or CD). Usually just opening and closing the tray solves the problem but it is annoying. It seems to do this with all the discs I have tried.

As others have noted, the remote is really terrible. Small keys that are hard to find. The "glow" feature is useless. There is also no "skip disc" button on the remote; each disc has a separate key for access.

Finally, the "fast forward and reverse" is done in jumps rather than in a smooth series. This makes it difficult to find a specific part of the disc.

If you are looking for a low priced DVD changer with progressive scan, this is worthwhile if you are willing to live with the shortcomings. I am not.

Strength:

plays CD-R and CD-RW discs with changer format, quiet on disc drawer opening and closing

Weakness:

defective unit, froze on first disc it played, non gold plated contacts

Pioneer has manufactured an inferior product as other reviewers have noted. No one should buy this machine as there is some inherent defect present in many of the units. I wish I had read the reviews first as I would never have bought this model.

Strength:

Excellent Picture, Flawless CD R, RW Play, 5 CD/
dvd, Progressive Scan, ease of use, on Screen Menu

Weakness:

Remote, sometimes seems to not pick up scratched disc as well. Could be nitpicking. Same disc have problems in the car as well.

When I was going out to buy A DVD player, I wanted one That had excellent sound and video (which it does). But this player had to also be multi-Disc and be able to play CD-R and RW's as well (which it does) for my burgeoning collection. At the time (3mos ago) this was the only one that filled the bill (especially at this price). Note: also plays video CD's.

I got to say I am NOT dissapointed at all. This player has lived up to all my expectations and then some.

I play my CD's, R's practically everyday for the last 1.5 months with absolutely no problems. I also have played numerous DVD's without any major problems as well.

The picture was suberb with my composite imputs, and it looks even better (though I didn't scrutinize it, too busy enjoying my DVD's) with my componet imputs.

The on screen controls are excellent and very useful. Lots of things to play with in set up as well. No zoom, but I don't miss that with this units quality features for the price. The unit always tells you what's going as far as modes, special features being used etc. compared to other brands.

This has been a excellent double duty peformer for me.

The only quibble I could mention is, somtimes doesn't read bad disc as well. But neither does my car when I play em so I guess it's the disc. Note this does not happen often, considering it's only been a few times, compared hundreds of hours of play already.

Also remotes glow only last legitimately for about an hour. Buttoms all look the same. This can be very confusing after being involved in a movie and you need to find a buttom quickly.

I have not had the reliability problems some of the others have mentioned previously. Please give the proper opportunity to review this unit, because the overall numbers is not representative of the unit (trust me).

I think I made out good.

Marlon AKA ML

PS, make sure you insert disc securely or it will not play i.e. read) the disc.

Strength:

Plays DVD, VCD,CD, CDR, CDRW, CD mode that only plays CDs even when DVDs or VCDs are in the tray. Progressive Scan and Component Output.

Weakness:

The remote is terrible. Only one search speed. no zoom (who cares?)

I am very happy with this purchase. It is certainly a bargin at the price. The remote really is bad. I didn't believe all the reviews from the DVC503, but it really is terrible. I would suggest using this player with some other remote (maybe the universal one from you reciever?). The 'CD mode' is a nice feature. You can press shuffle without a video suddenly popping up.

Some people complain about the noise when changing discs. I think it sounds just like I expect. A little whirring while the tray moves. not too bad. If you are playing a DISC or talking to friends you can't even hear it.

I think the on screen controls on the Sony players I've used are a little better, but these are not too bad.

overall, I would recommend this purchase. great picture, great functionality, great price.

Weakness:

The remote is without a doubt the worst piece of crap I've ever had the misfortune to experience. A little noisey when load, opening and closing but that's small potatos.

I'd previously posted a review of this product in th 503 section because this one wasn't up yet so I'll only paraphrase here. I am more than satisfied with the versatility and quality of this unit. It has done everything I've asked of it and met every task thrown at it. Wish the unit hadn't shipped with stickers all over the front of it but I guess that's how they wanted it. I've no problems with this unit and at 305 delivered, it's an absolute bargain for a DVD with progressive scan, component output, 5 disc carousel and a host of other features. All that being said, the remote is awful!!! Small keys almost all the same size, not backlit, with a terrible ghostly glow that's supposed to help me see the thing in a darkened room???!!! Give a chimp three days and it could design a better remote.

Strength:

Changer, progressive scan

Weakness:

Remote control

I would like to revise my previous review of this product. Because of problems reading the discs, I returned the first one I bought and decided to give it another try. The new one reads every disc without a problem. After doing some more research, it seems like this unit is the best value for the money considering the features it offers. The progressive scan picture is outstanding on my Samsung 480p TV and the changer is just what I needed.
