Strength:

All said before ... very good.
2 SCARTS

Weakness:

not too impressed with reverse slow motion (steps too course)

I've been told that the lip-sync problem is dependant on which multi-region mod you have. the cheap one causes problems (suprise surprise) but the one which includes changing chips works fine. I have no problems on mine.

Strength:

Raw music clearaty, the best picture quality I have ever seen on a DvD player. This Pioneer is all good..

Weakness:

None that I could find.

I have tested this player on different amplifiers and TV. And the conclusion is that this player is one of the best buys you can make. the only bottleneck of my current homevideo sustem now is my TV, wich my DVD player "showed" me sucks! But in 2hours, 15minutes I will have a 32" sony Widescreen..

To all those who bought this player, good choise.
Those that did not, though luck..
Note: I hear some people say that DVD players are all the same, and one could buy a low price player and get as good as the expensive.. To them: Yuo cant, read the different articles in here and find out why..

Strength:

built quality, look (in gold), weight, IMAGE (!! in RGB), SOUND (excellent CD player with separate laser), audiophile type, connectivity, tuning (DNR, sharpness, block filter), Mbit rate

Weakness:

YUV ? Elite tag missing? (should have diserved the Elite tag)

Not yet tested at home, will be delivered Saturday. Seen in on different sets. One word: FABULOUS. And best bang for the bucks ($850 all zones). Will marry perfectly my Pioneer THX VSA E06. Image is far far better than the 310 (easy).
Will make review later. Wanted a gold/aluminium heavy dvd player with audiophile quality and this is the one. Won the EISA award in 1998. I repeat, this player should have been taged with ELITE category from Pioneer. But there is no European ELITE cat it seems.

Strength:

Absoloutly razor sharp rgb picture feeding Panasonic 32" widescreen.
No lip synch problems to date(16 DVD's)
Bought unit while on holiday in Scotland from Comet for £399.00.

Weakness:

Analogue audio out appears to be quite low, have to turn up tv volume, fed via scart, until it hisses.
To counteract, fed s-video and audio through Panasonic NV Hs 950 S-Vhs video
recorder to tweak the audio on the way to the TV, but Macrovision buggered up the video output. Awaiting Denon 2800 receiver/AV amp to process audio properly. Will do another review then.

Excellent!

Strength:

Sound to die for, well built remote, good picture, lots of outputs and a lot more

Weakness:

Its a bit noisy when reading discs, a little bit.

I bought the pioneer 3 weeks ago, and I must say I´m very i
impressed. The Sound is amazing annd the picture razor sharp. I haven´t yet seen this so called lip sync problem, I even watched Face Off, which is sopposed to have this problem. We were two watching closely in Dolby Digital and we didin´t see any problem. Maybe Pioneer has fixed this problem or I just can notice nsec, I don´t know.
So in summary: BUY IT KNOW, don´t have any doubts.

Strength:

great sound (for a digital product)

Weakness:

only comes in gold, remote control 'busy'

I have bought this maily as a CD player and was rather amazed at the excellent sound quality - good soundstage, reasonably uncoloured, although the treble continues to be a little harsh as digital sound usually is. Not as good as a high end turntable, but better than almost every CD player I have heard! DVD picture quality is good using my svideo connector over a long distance, although it mistracks occasional DVDs. Remote control is large and covered in buttons although the common functions are easy to access. This machine is rather large and only comes in gold which looks nice but doesn't go with the rest of my system. 24/96 output is useful for external DACs although the onboard DACs are pretty good.

Strength:

Audio & video.

Weakness:

Scanning.

Two words; GET IT!
The only really small downside I have found to this player is when scanning backwards. Although, I did NOT buy this player just to have perfect frame-by-frame scan backwards, hell no! :) I bought it just because of the fact that this player is fantastic, absolutely amazing. And as said, get it, it's definitely worth it!

This player is great it's so easy to set up and use a child can do it trust me I have seen them. The 717 looks high end with it's gold finish and with RGB via Scart the picture is truely tops no bleeding or ghosting.Sound is good but I still use my Denon 370 for CD's, all in all if you want a player with RGB as I did get this one.

I am considering buying a Pioneer 717 but was worried by the press coverage of the Pioneer lip sync problems (e.g. June 99 Home Cinema Choice). I did an A-B test with a Sony 715 at Richer Sounds in Newcastle (thanks guys) using Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels and The Big Lobowski. The lip sync was definitely worse on the Pioneer but only really noticeable when the sync was out on the disc. The point is it was obtrusive more frequently on the Pioneer than on the Sony. Where the sync was only slightly out I had to concentrate really hard to see it on the Sony, if you were not looking for it you would not notice it, but it was obvious on the Pioneer. In all other respects the Pioneer seems a fine machine with all the perfomance and facilities I'm looking for but how many discs are there out there with slight sync problems which are going to show up badly on the Pioneer. Apparently the problem affects all the current Pioneer DVD decks and Pioneer can not (or do not intend) fixing it as any fix will compromise picture quality! I E-mailed Pioneer (last month) asking for more detail on the problem but they have not bothered to reply. If Pioneer can convince me that there are (and will be) few discs as badly out of Sync as Lock, Stock I may still buy the 717.

Strength:

Outstanding Picture Quality for Both PAL and NTSC Discs (Via RGB - Selector Set to PAL), No Digital Picture Artifacts,Good Build Quality, Good DTS, and Dolby Digital Sound with Movies.

Weakness:

Undynamic and Colored Sound with CD's, No Resume Function when Pressing Stop, Very Basic Menu

I Used the 717 for almost 2 years now, and i have to admit that i'm really impressed by it's Picture Quality.
Hooked via RGB Scart to my Philips Matchline 33PT9101 100Hz TV, it gives an outstandingly vivid and lifelike picture with any source material.
Using both The Avia, and the Video Basics Test DVD's proves beyond any doubt the Outstanding Picture Quality of this Player (and my TV as well).
Primary Colors and Subtle Hues are portrayed with accuracy,
Resolution is Excellent, The Full Grayscale from 100% White to 100% Black is displayed without any problems, motion is excellent, and theres certainly NO Lip Sync Problem.
Layer Transition takes around 1-2 Sec which is not outstanding, but not bad either.
As a DVD some shortcomings i found include the omission of a Resume function if you press Stop, A Very Basic Menu, and some jerky action if you try to go back some seconds in a film.
Sound with DTS, and DD Material is Very Good as well, but i was quite disappointed with the sound Quality of the 717 as a CD Player.
With CD's the Sound is a bit Soft, With Colored Midrange, Bloated Bass, and seriously compressed Dynamic Range.
Comparing the CD sound with my aging (But Still Excellent if used as CD transport Only) Marantz CD63SE reveals all these shortcomings.
I've Tested Both Players from their Analog and Digital Outputs (Feeding My Yamaha DSP-AX1's Onboard Burr-Brown DACs Using the outstanding AudioQuest VideoPro Pure Silver Cables), and the overall sound of the 717 is similar either way. The Marantz digitally feeding the Yamaha sounds truly superior.
Full 5 Marks for The Picture, 3 Marks for CD Sound
