Strength:

Great picture, Fantastic performance for the price!

Weakness:

None that we can even mention!

I had bought the Pioneer DV-525 because the the reviews. I had looked at local stores for a VCD player for my chinese parents that would also play chinese DVDs and video CDs, the preferred video format in the Far East. I tried the Oritron and Toshiba models, but those balked when trying to play the VCDs. Cost was an issue too, because our Sony could play them well, but the cost was over $300. I am happy to report that the Pioneer DV-525 has performed flawlessly for my parents, and has had NO trouble with anything we triedto play in it - DVDs, video CDs, CDS, you name it can play it. Also my parents had no problem mastering the remote control (and they're technophobes!) and we noticed no appreciable drive noise as experienced by other reviewers. Overall, an exceptional versatile DVD/VCD/CD player!

Strength:

great price, high quality

Weakness:

I don't like the display, but what ever floats your boat

My roommate bought this dvd player and it is hooked up to my Onkyo Integra DTR-7, BA vr940, Paradigm LCR-350, Paradigm PDR-10 sub, and my crappy KLH rears (soon to be my vr940's when i get new fronts). But I must say wow, it has a great picture and has not had any video/audio sync problems like my friends Sony. The sound is great even hooked through a coax. And the best part is that he only payed $200 open box and its $218 normally at Audio King. I was not able to find it on-line cheaper! Its a great buy for its price and kicks other dvd players $200+ more, Pioneer really has there stuff together.

Strength:

Good picture, sound

Weakness:

none found

Bought around 6 months ago. Connected easily into the system. Sound is good and picture is excellent. I have not yet seen the layer problems others have reported or have the disc spinning noise. I checked many different models, but got this model due Pioneer's history with laser players and by reading reviews of the various models. This model has had a very high and consistent ratings average.

disk spinning noise, remote sized for G.I. Joe

I don't have any problems with the Matrix, or Fight Club (see below) I do have problems with the disks. every movie I put in, makes a noise when spinning. (which it does the whole time I'm using it, obviously). not that big of a deal, but it is annoying. also I have had some (very few actually) lip-sync problems, and in The Mummy had a part where the picture was scrambled. I'm returning the movie and hope that was the problem. There isn't really anything spectacular about this unit, or poor about it. It's a regular old mundane DVD player.

The remote buttons are too close together, and small. Maybe they had kids testing it in the design stage or something.

Strength:

Excellent value

Weakness:

Remote difficult to use, no menu button / D-pad on front panel, Audio synch, Tray/running noise

This player has been great value for me. I use as both a DVD and CD player and it seems to cover both of these tasks quite adequately. The player has everything you would want at this price including component video out and two digital outputs for audio. The menu system is easy to use and while the remote coves all the functions well, its is hard to find the right button in the dark, but there has been enough comment on that already so i won't say much else excep that most people will be using a receiver or other universal remote to control it anyway.

The front panel looks excellent and simple but the only problem is that you can't use the menu from the front panel. I would have liked to see a small jog dial used on the front to both select tracks when playing a CD and to cycle through menu options on a DVD.

My other complaints, first of all i did notice the dreaded audio-synch problem on this player when i played the notorious Wedding Singer (R4). However i haven't noticed anything else out of synch (except for the very humourous deleted scenes from Cruel Intentions R4) so i'm not too disappointed. The other minor complaint is that the player is a bit noisy but this is only noticeable in nearly silent scenes so again it isn't much of a problem.

Apart from that this player is difficult to fault. It covers all the basic features of DVD and more; the only feature it doesn't have is zoom but i'm not sure exactly how useful this feature really is.

The biggest problem at the moment is that my TV doesn't have component or even s-video so i can't use these outputs from the player, but apart from that it is an excellent basic player from a reputable brand.

Oh yeah and the other good thing, my player just happened to be modified out of the box direct from the manufacturer! The rumour is that Pioneer had to stop supplying modified units so they repackaged them all under the same model no so that no one would know the difference, but there seems to be a green dot on some boxes. Both mine and a friend's DV525 had these dots on the box and they ended up being modified so you can draw your own conclusions from that.

Anyway it all adds up to great value at an RRP of $AUD 749, although it can be found for $699 at most retailers and i got mine for $550 so as you can tell i am very happy with this product.

Strength:

DTS,DD,Component Video, Better sounding than DV-414,
24 bits/96 KHz

Weakness:

No display off mode

I didn't realize how good this player could be until I purchased a Camelot Dragon 5.1 lately and put it between the DV-525 and the Denon AVR-5700. From a somewhat thin and uninvolving sounding unit, now the 525 has become a very musical sounding CD player AND a very satisfying DVD player. Even without the coming BetterCables component video cables that I recently ordered, I have had no complaints about the composite video output, which is supposedly inferior to s-video and component video outs.
Combined with the Dragon 5.1, it makes for an AV source that easily competes with $1,500 or more expensive units.
In absolute terms, it may lack some last degree of details at extreme frequencies, but for the money I give it 5 stars.

Strength:

Excellant picture, Sound & outputs

Weakness:

Transfer / spinning noise
Remote could be improved on (minor)

This is a great buy in the DVD market. Outstanding picture & sound.
After reading many reviews, I bought mine as an open box from Crutchfield for $189.00, knowing I could return it if I was unsatisfied. I almost returned it because of the very annouying disk noise during playback. It is louder on different dvds. Like Elliot from Dallas said in a recent review - sounds like a dare hyper cricket. I just watched "The world is not enough" Bond flick, no problems, or many be there are enough bombs going off that it is never quiet enough to notice. A friend has a Sony & he said his has a spinning noise too, so I decided to keep it - just nothing out there with these options, sound and picture for the $$$.

Remote not Backlit

This is my first DVD player and purchased the product after reading many reviews. The was reasonable ($212)and I wanted to make sure there were component video outputs.

I was amazed at the picture quality through RCA jacks into a 10 year old Phillips 27" television. The sound through a standard Kenwood receiver, mainly Private Ryan on two channel,is impressive. I cannot wait to complete my first foray into Home theatre with a better TV and a Surround Sound Receiver later this year so I can take full advantage of the DVD capabilities.

I would reccomend this to anyone at this time. 4 stars only because this is my first adventure with DVD.

Weakness:

Very pleased with this unit overall. No serious problems in the few months I've been using it other than the slight playing noise which has been mentioned before (it's really not that bad). As far as the remote goes, I probably could've designed a better one, but oh well. Again, overall it's a great dvd player for a great price.

Very capable DVD player. Plays well. Have had no problems with it since purchasing. Best player for the money $200!!!!

Weakness:

Remote is a little confusing, but who cares...you get used to it.

Buy this system if you don't have a lot of money now but might in the near future. This player is ready for most all of your audio and video wet dreams. Check out the input/outputs this one comes with.
