Strength:

Plays CDR/VCD-CDR Component out 24/96 audio out

Weakness:

Remote

I am picking up one of the Pioneer DV-525 units this weekend largly because of what I have read on this site. The RCA served me well, but an replacing this unit soley because I wanted one that played Home made VCD's (my RCA played Audio CDR's) This unit will play everything CDR, and even the new SVCD standard Super Video CD's and miniDVD's!! Doesnt say that in the manual!! I test drove one in a local store, to find that the tray was a little cheap feeling, but while the disc played didnt notice anything unusual about how loud it was playing back..The remote definately sucked :) I have to give this unit 5 stars for its value and ability to play all CDR's of any kind, cant find a DVD player in this price range that will do that!! I hope this unit eliminates some of the Pixelation on my RCA, otherwise the RCA was a good unit, it played any DVD for the cheap price I paid for it :) I would recommend this to anyone with a CD burner and wishes to play backed up DVD onto VCD or is into video editing and such..

Strength:

Cheap, Great Picture, Super-Easy setup

Weakness:

None yet

I have had this player about 5 days now and cannot say enough good things about it. I looked long and hard and decided to go with the Poineer for the price of the unit with the component outputs. I do not understand all the reviews talking about the tray noise. If I dont get closer than 6 inches from the player I cannot hear anything...So far I have seen ( The Matrix, Waterworld, Apocolypse Now, Apollo 13, American Pie, Enemy of the State and The Eagles-Hell Freezes Over )....Absolutely not one glitch so far. The Eagles DVD in DTS is absolutely amazing. The remote control could have been a little better but it is sufficient. Once everything is connected, it takes 2 minutes tops to go through the menus and set up. If you are like I was and are trying to decide what to get...Get the Pioneer. You cannot beat this unit for the price. The picture is amazing.

Strength:

Good picture and sound on DVD. Good budget cd transport. Dual lens pick-up,one for DVD, VCD and the other for CD

Weakness:

Flimsy and noisy tray

I've been using the player for about a year. I enjoy watching DVD movies but most of the time I use it as cd transport and connect it to DAC (Alchemist TS-D 1).It sounded great.Although it is povided with build in DAC 24bit, the Alchemist dac uses much better components. I mounted it on 3 cones and it really sings. It's good value for the money! I paid $650 (Singapore dollars)

Strength:

Well, picture is solid, sound acceptable, plays cdr when unit is'nt jamming or wiggin out

Weakness:

unreliable, especally if you use the onboard D/A convertors,
Noisy! Build quality's atrocious!S-vid burned out on mine...

This machine does offer a lot for the price, but it also offers a lot of headache. If you buy this unit be prepared to sacrifice aesthetic & structural quality and feel the constant nagging pains of buyer remorse. I just donated mine to a grade school A/V program and i'm sure it will serve it's purpose very well in a noisy tech lab. But please, before you go out and buy this product, go to a local store that sells this unit and pick it up. Place your finger on the hood and depress its cheap plastic exterior with a feathery touch. Look at the remote buttons and imagine trying to find them at home in the DARK!{something that can be done with memorization, but try and tell the wife and kids that!} Push the open button and listen to that 747 they were able to pack under the hood! If you even consider buying this poorly made low end kindergarten special, please take the advice of another poster and place some kind of silicone damping material inside the unit. And if you like to watch movies at night!? Please go out and buy a universal with illuminated keys. This remote is made for daytime viewing. And if you have any plans of using this player as a main cd player for any extended period, do not expect this unit to function as anything more than a CD TRNS because the unit gets very warm and malfunctions when it is asked to do the D/A conversion in house! So in closing, the DVD 525 does offer a few nice features, but for a hundered more you can pick up a Toshiba 5 disk Changer with a build quality at least 5x greater than the Pioneer 525 & with HDCD capability! And you wont have to listen to that noisy tray opening and closing a d nauseum time after time after time! At least I got 5 reasonably good DVD's, a $50 rebate, and 20 free BLOCKBSTR rentals for buying this piece of garbage. Because I'd feel much worse about my purchase and my review if I had'nt! Please! Save up for a better player. It won't take you more than a few months to sink your new found wealth into a much better long
term player. Invest your A/V dollars wisely and you'll have much more money long term to enjoy the equipment you buy! These gadgets don't entertain themselves!

And yes I give this player a 1! It recieves high negative points for the aforementioned build quality and noise quotient!

Strength:

Optical and coaxial output, plays cd-r and cd-rw

Weakness:

NOISY!!!! Cheap look and some skipping when playing dvd's

Well...this player isn't what i want. For instance, layer changes is slow, high pitching noise when watching dvd's and sometimes some skipping. Now i have Yahama's s796 and it's much better...no more pitching noise and no any other problems.

Strength:

Good Video and Audio

Weakness:

Pause once and awhile on a scene usually contributed to a dirty disk however

I found this player to be quality product for the price. As an Electronics Engineer with a pretty good ear I was disturbed about a number of people writing in about the CD sound quality. I hav not used it that extensively with audio and will have to compare it with my Kyocera CD player which I boxed up. As a note I came across a review for CD playback performance performed on a PC spectrum analyzer and the results were excellent across the board on the CD performance. Check out:

Strength:

Features for the price

Weakness:

noise during menu and first 10 minutes of the movie.

I had an apex for a month, but the thing was so flaky I took it back, despite the Macrovision and region defeats.

The DV-525 is a very nice unit for the price ($212 at Sears, as Best Buy was out of inventory - as usual).

The video, even into my composite only TV, looks great. As I got a Pioneer VSX-D608 receiver the same day and an Aiwa HTS-1500 speaker setup, it has been quite a move up from my circa 1984 stereo I've had for a while.

I watched Stargate and Mummy (can't wait to bring the Matrix home from work) and the surround was just beautiful to have.

People have complained about the remote - personally I don't think it's that bad...not the best designed, but it is usable - though I usually use the 608's remote.

Tray noise - what I've found is that when the DVD first loads to the menu, and for about the first 5-12 minutes of the disc, the noise is noticable. My wife says it doesn't bother her - it just pisses me off. I don't think it'd be a problem if the unit was inside a closed entertainment center. Anyway, eventually the noise quites down and is only noticible during quite passages, and only if you are really trying to hear it.

The tray noise is about the only flaw I've found with this unit so far, and in general am VERY happy.

Strength:

Great video and sound, easy set up, low price.

Weakness:

None, really. Except now I'm spoiled by DVD video and cannoy stand to watch VHS!!

The Pioneer DV-525 has excellent video and sound. It is very easy to set and up use.

I paid $249 at Circuit City, got 5 free DVDs and no Pokemon.

My current receiver does not support DTS or Dolby Digtal, just Dolby Pro-Logic. Yet the DV-525 provides wonderful sound through my system. I'm not sure if the credit goes to the DVD player or the receiver, but the definition, stereo separation, and even rear-channel effects are great (far better than VHS or Cable). I added an inexpensive powered subwoofer, and the extra punch is amazing. Certainly, a DD/DTS receiver will be even more impressive, but no one should hold back buying this DVD player because they cannot afford a new receiver right now . . .

I've probably watched 30 movies so far with no problems at all. Very impressive hardware
