Strength:

Great picture and sound

Weakness:

None considering the price!

The 525 is a fantastic DVD player for the money. OK it doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles but it plays DVD's damn well and that's what I bought it to do. I've never had any problems playing any disks, the sound and picture are first rate and I don't know what the big deal is about the playback noise. People can be so picky! One of the other reasons I bought this unit is because it's one of the few that can actually play CD-Rs (Hitachi can to I think). I find the remote quite useable, its definitely better than the Toshiba 2109s but not as good as the Sony 330. A great, no nonsense, straightforward DVD player at a great price. What more could you ask for?

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound. Good price.I had it upgraded so it plays all regions. No prolems encounterd. It even plays burnt CD's.

Weakness:

Sometimes, with some DVD's (not all) the picture freezes for a split second when the player enters the second layer ( I guess).

Because the DVL700 was a US player it could not play PAL, region 2 disks. I've searched the Internet for a upgrade but found none. So I had to buy an cheap but good DVD player, that could play region 2 als well as region 1. The Pioneer DV525 is that machine. (By the way, I use a Sony DSP EP90ES and I'm looking for an upgrade to let it play DTS, if anybody knows how please let me know)

Strength:

Great picture and sound quality. Outputs, Outputs, everywhere.

Weakness:

The fact that there aren't more companies like Pioneer.

Ok, here's the deal. First off, I have been through more stereo in my life than that of a dumpster outside radio shack. Everything in my house has been taken about at one time or another. So when I got this DVD player the first thing I did was ponder why this unit was so lite. Anyway, the noise everyone complains about....I heard it once when I put the first dvd in, after that, nothing at all. As for the remote, small buttons don't work with fat fingers. Thats all I have to say about that. Picture quality far surpassed anything I've seen when it comes to dvd. Sounds great too even if you don't have a great stereo. As for me dolby 5.1 is just around the corner. LONG LIVE PIONEER!!

Strength:

For the price picture and sound are excellent

Weakness:

Bit basic with the toys

This machine does not suffer from any problems providing it has the paragon region free chip professionally fitted, this actually stops any lip sync problems

Strength:

No glitches.

Weakness:

None found so far.

Pioneer has nailed it with this unit. In terms of DVD player performance, I believe that the point of diminishing returns starts here and drops off sharply. I have lived with this player for more than a month and after 20 or so movies and countless CD's played, no shortcomings have been detected thus far. My most often played DVD is King Crimson's "Deja Vroom" which is apparently quite challenging to a DVD player. With it's many camera angles, DTS soundtrack, and special features, this recording brought my Phillips DVD 825 to it's knees with overheating and lock-up problems during hard access scenarios. No problems with the Pioneer DV 525 though. It runs cool and never stumbles. The picture is great and the sound far surpasses my older Pioneer CD 100 disc player. (no surprise here) Yes, it's light due to a thin cabinet and the mechanism makes noise (which I've never heard during playback) but nevertheless, I would highly recommend this product to anyone.
Got mine from Crutchfield for $307 dollars delivered via 2-day shipping. Not too shabby considering Crutchfield's liberal return policy and the expedience of the delivery. All the usual freebies (Netflix/Wherehouse) included.

Strength:

Features are nice for the price.

Weakness:

Have audio dropout and lip synch problems on 3 consecutive DVD's. I am returning the unit and looking for a replacement from a different manufacturer. I am very disappointed with this unit.

Its nice to hear others have had a good experience with this player but I am very dissappointed. I am returning the unit and I will not buy a Pioneer again.
Evidently the audio and lip synch problems have been experienced by others although it is more severe in my case.

Weakness:

Noisy tray mechanism
Noisy disc access
SCART socket

Picture and sound are top quality, but the overall build quality lets this player down. The tray sounds cheap and the disc accessing noises are above average. Also the remote is tiny and badly laid out. It's one of those love hate things I'm afraid.

Strength:

Feature Rich
Inexpensive

Weakness:

Remote Control Has Small Buttons
No Jog On Remote

After reading the great reviews here I decided to purchase this unit. I've noticed no lipsync problems and it plays VCD's and CD-R's just fine. The OSD is well designed (nice menu's, choice of bg color, etc etc) and the player has about every option under the sun (Full range of audio/video outputs and great settings for them) for ~$300. It loads fast and the picture/sound quality is excellent. My only complaint is that the remote is barely functional (small buttons, very plain) and it doesn't have the best seeking (No jog on the remote, etc). These minor details can easily be overlooked for the price and quality of the unit.

Strength:

Sound, fast cd load & eject, front panel design

Weakness:

Door open close noise

I don't agree with other reviewers that pointed out the light weight of this unit. Yes, it is light, but unless poked with a heavy finger, what difference does it make? The sound quality is excellent, and for me, the load and play times are quick. I haven't noticed transport noise while playing, other than a quiet "whir", but not noticable in my audio closet. The door is noisy when opening and closing, and I suppose it could be better, but again, who cares?
