Strength:

picture, sound, performance. Everything

Weakness:

The tray sometime makes to much noise

This product is just as good as 535,626. I recomend the 525 over 535 and almost over the 626. But there is too much difference between 626 and 525. But if you are going to purchase a dvd. Choose 525 because of the price and value

Strength:

Very reliable player. Good features for the money, especially the ability to play everything except Laser Discs.

Weakness:

Too light. Have to hold it when pushing buttons, remote is hard to read (buttons too small).

I think this is a very good entery level DVD player. Mine does not have the mechanism noise I have read about in so many posts here (I just tried it out before writing this review). It played "The Matrix" without any problems, as well as CDr/rw and VCD. The DVD video and audio is very good; it has all of the connections you could want; and it seems to be very reliable (so far). For the money, it's a bargain. However, I would have to agree that the CD audio is not as good as it should be. My first generation Pioneer PD7010 from 1987 sounds better. Now that's CD audio! Yes, the scanning could be better, but I seldom use it..I just put in the movie and let it go, so it doesn't bother me. I would have no problem recommending this unit to anyone. I have always had good luck with Pioneer products. Note: The new 333 seems to be the direct replacement for the 525.

Strength:

DTS,Component video, Memory function, Superb picture and sound, Great value for a dvd under $300.

Weakness:

Sensitive to dvds with fingerprints

I've had it since March and I couldn't be more pleased. People are complaining about the noise while the dics is playing but I have it in a cabinet and cannot hear it with the door closed. I was able to hear it with the door open on scenes with quiet dialogue but it was not distracting. The player froze up during the Antz on theDTS demo disc. I ejected it and saw multiple fingerprints on the dvd. I wiped it clean and the problem did not reappear. The noise when you open and close the tray is not an issue for me as it is for others.
I have it hooked up to a Pioneer Elite vsx24 receiver with Definiteve technology pro cinema 80's(100 center speaker)with sub. I will be reviewing both of these in the next 3-4 months(both are awesome by the way!)
I researched many DVD players up to $500 and the Pioneer was the best value by far. You will not be disappointed. I believe this years model is now called the 333 as opposed to the 525. I paid $249 AT Circuit City but I have seen it for $225 at Costco Warehouse.

Wow, what a relief! This is my second review for Consumer Review and thankfully I can now say that I am happy. I originally bought the Samsung 709 and thought it was great until I plugged it in. That cheap little player would not play The Matrix and was way too sensitive to dust and prints on the disc. The Pioneer on the other hand has performed flawlessly. The same disk that skipped like crazy in the Samsung plays perfectly in the Pioneer. VERY HAPPY NOW. I only wish the remote was as cool, Samsung did a great job with theirs. The DV-525's is pure vanilla. But hey, you can't have everything you want, can you?

Strength:

Few if any video artifacts

Weakness:

Poor black level definition

I have been comparing the performance of both the Pioneer DV-525 and the Toshiba SD-1200 for 3 days. The monitor used is a Panasonic 32SF35 which has 2 S-Video inputs allowing immediate comparison of picture quality. Both units exhibit very good pictures overall with very few artifacts due to downconversion etc. However, the Pioneer's picture is slightly darker than the Toshiba's reducing detail in dark or shadowy area's. This is particularly noticeable in remastered movies such as American Graffiti where 90% of the movie takes place at night. I also found the Poineer's settings for black level, Cinema, Standard, Animation to be ineffective, producing very little change in the picture. Adjusting the TV's brightness control helped a bit, but the Toshiba still produced more detail in dark scenes. I plan to keep the Toshiba.

The DV-525 is by far the best DVD player I've seen for the price. I got it a week ago, and have watched about 5 movies so far. None of them had any problems whatsoever. I am trashing my VCR and going with DVD. The overall quality is phenominal. If you're going to get a DVD player. Definetely get this Pioneer. I got it for under $250 at Onsale.

I have had this piece for about a week now and have not been dissapointed. The audio and video are excellent. The negative quality about this piece is the motorized tray. Sounds and moves a little cheap. The remote is not the best either, but if you get the SONy RM-AV2000, no need for these supplied remotes.Excellent overall piece, especially for the price, under 300.

Weakness:

tray noise

I have an open shelf rack. The tray noise during play bothers me a little bit. But my colleague's DV525 doesn't have this problem at all. I guess if you are lucky, you can get a quiet one. Except the noise, this player is an excellent one considering its <$250 price. As long as you use the digital output, I think the sound quality should be the same for all players. The real difference is picture. This is the best valued player without AC3 decoder.
