Strength:

Great picture and great sound. Component out-puts as well as both optical and coaxial outs.

Weakness:

remote buttons are too small and not backlit. Almost impossible to use in the dark.

I''ve owned the DV-525 for about three years. I purchased it for $450 cdn when it first came out. (you ca get it now for about $225) In that time I have played literily thousands of DVD''s and CD''s, CD''R and CD-RW''s and it has never failed me. It is one of the best CD transports I have listened to. The sound from this unit is amazing. Yes, you can hear the unit working. But, it is only audible if you are right next to it and listening for it. As far as hearing it during a movie or music playback. You can''t!

Weakness:

Unit was alway very noisy. Only lasted 24 months and was not used much.

I thought by buying "Pioneer" that I was buy quality. Unfortunately this was not my experience. My DV-525 lasted only 24 months with very minimal usage. When I went back to the dealer that sold it to me they weren''t surprised. Apparently I bought an entry level Pioneer DVD player and got what I paid for. I don''t think I will purchase another Pioneer!

This player is great for the price and its great for a player period. Now about the noisy transport-are you going to be opening and closing it during a movie? or even playing a cd? no so it doesn't matter.

OK girls! stop whining about the transport noise, loading tray and so on...You probably think your dime is as big as a car tire or something. You expect too much....girls

Do your own research. For the price that you pay for a DVD player (between $240 and $280), there are no other better DVD player better than the DV-525. It has everything as DD, DTS output, 96kHz to 48kHz sampling rate, it can play all kind of disc formats (CD, VCD, CDR, DVD). If you want a quite transport, solid loading tray, spend $1500 on a good player then.

I bought it from www.ecost.com for $239.00 with free shipping and pokemon DVD

Picture quality

I was almost ready to fork out $700+ for a DV-05 until I looked at the DV-525. For $249 after rebate I'll put the other $450 towards a VSX-26 receiver.

I have noticed the spinning noise referred to in other reviews but it shouldn't be a problem once I get the unit in my rack.

100% satisfied!

Strength:

Component out, DTS out, can read CD-Rs.

Weakness:

Cheap loading tray, and chapter search is weak.

I decided to give the Pioneer a try, I wanted a dvd player with DTS to go along with my Yamaha 795 DD/DTS receiver. The Pioneer 525 is a great bargin....great video, easy to use, etc. Overall, nice player. After watching Dances with Wolves in DTS, i was blown away.

Strength:

Great Picture, Easy Menus, Audio outs

Weakness:

Remote not backlit

This was recommended by a friend who owns a audio/video shop. I was on the virge of purchasing a Toshiba 2109, and he talked me into checking out the dv-525 at his shop. After checking out the picture on his widescreen, and hearing the sound through his digital receiver, it was the one I had to buy!!! The drive noise is slightly noticeable only when I stand in front of it before the movie starts. NOT noticeable when the movie is playing. I have not experienced any of the problems with layer change, lip sync, etc.
$299 before rebate, with the free movies etc., this player is DEFINITELY worth the price and I would suggest it to anyone interested in upgrading to DVD

Strength:

Plays CD-R's

Weakness:

Tray mechanics

Very happy with unit so far. It plays everything I have put in it. It is the least expensive link in my A/V system and works as well as any. The tray is noisy and mechanically harsh compared to the Sony CD player it replaced. This anoyance is minor and didn't effect my decision towards its purchase. I would recommend this unit to anyone interested in playing cd-r's and dvd.

Strength:

Performance, Dual laser, Optical output

Weakness:

No zoom feature

I chose the DV-525 based on the specifications and high ratings it received in this forum. What impressed me was not only the high ratings, but the large number of reviews. I also considered Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic models, but felt this was the best for the money. I am very satisfied with the performance of this player. I've played The Matrix, Top Gun, Run Lola Run, Die Hard, Notting Hill (my PC DVD drive had problems with this one), music CD-Rs, etc. - no problems whatsoever. The weakness listed above was the only thing that I can think of that I would've liked, and it's very minor - how often would you use it? I've gotten over the build quality (such as the loading tray) and the noise that many have written about. I don't notice it anymore - only the first few times and mainly because I read the reviews here beforehand and was checking to see if it bothered me enough to choose another, which it didn't. It was a good deal a little over a month ago, now at the new reduced prices, it's an even better deal. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family.
