I would like to say this is a mid level roll DVD/CD/SACD/MP3 player before Blue rays generation. AUDIO Sound quality is little bit better than other DVD players build from China. But, not too high end sound quality can produce. Made in Malaysia quality build as you know. One step down from Made in Japan quality. Overall is much better than made in China DVD players.
Good thing is you can play most of all format Disc. SACD & MP3 features. Drawer can open and close very fastly. Also scanning very fast.

What a great UDP! Of course when I bought this player, blu-ray wasn't available. So at the time, it could be considered a Universal Disc Player. And it does play every disc. Even those produced poorly. No skip, no distortion, just clean wonderful sound. Not quite as amazing as my now reference Sony XA-5400ES but the Sony can't play every disc. In the past, Pioneer has produced some of the best transports. Even high-end manufacturers such as AYRE have used Pioneer. Today, however, Pioneer has dropped the ball when it comes to transports. The 58AV sounds great but fails to track several discs. My only other CD player that plays all of my CD's flawlessly is an inexpensive TEAC. This leads me to believe that Esoteric is probably the leader in reliable transports (eg VRDS). I also highly recommend the older Pioneer players: PD-59, PD-65, DV-45 and 47ai.

Strength:

Great progressive scan image, plays mp3, video CD. Has 2-s-vdeo, 2 composites,
and 1 component.

Weakness:

The remote feels cheap, looks alot like my LD remote from the mid-90's. Audio lacks a bit.

One of the better DVD players, out there.Well built , less bulky than DV-09, DV-37,
Great for DVD's, not so great for CD's . Can't explain it , there's something missing regarding CD audio. No Matter, DVD player should only be used as a DVD player.

Strength:

plays stuff

Weakness:

doesn't play some stuff too well

I was auditioning this unit for the universal capability. What I found was no matter what I was listening to,it always sounded like I was listening to a movie soundtrack.I've lived with the Sony es-999 for almost 2 years now & hafta say that the 47 comes nowhere near the sound quality. The 47 sounds tolaidback for my listening.I've been a musician for most of my life & know what instruments are supposed to sound like. There is no leading edge with the 47,just candy coating. This unit is another dvd-a player that tries to be an SACD player.Maybe someday Sony will get their heads out of the dark crevis,s & realize they could make a mint on a universal player. With all these dual discs coming out in the quick future there's greenback in them thar hills. The cd playback was the same(candy coated).

Weakness:

I bought this DVD player before my new surroundsound setup which includes Definitive Technology Speakers and a Pioneer Eliet 43TX AV receiver This DVD player is a little hard to setup, but once you figure it out, it's the best one out there for the money. This is the top of the line of the Pioneer Elite Brand Awesome sound and picture

Strength:

Plays every format? iLink 12bit/108Mhz Video dac PS PAL, PS NTSC

Weakness:

Build, very light, looks cheap, the disc tray is purly crap.

A decent allround player. I bought this player because of it's soft sound characteristic. My Kappa 400 have a tendency to become fairly bright. It's an ok cd-player but it didn't beat my Arcam cd72t.

Excellent video and audio quality. Could not be happier with this unit and the Pioneer Elite VSX-49TXi receiver. I only use the iLink connection for audio and all passes through it.

Strength:

Audio / video quality

Weakness:

Strange squealing noise. Small display hard to see across the room. Most used buttons on remote not very well placed.

Audio and video quality are both excellent. The high resolution audio is outstanding. Great dynamic range and clarity. My only complaint is a strange variable high pitch squeal that starts after about 2 hours of use. Very annoying.

Strength:

Very good case design, very good GUI, Lots of outputs,

Weakness:

main disc tray a little cheap. The main buttons on the romote need to be bigger and put in a better place, needs a HDMI connector to be the perfect player. Chroma Bug needs some work, Mass management needs more detail in the setup.

This is my first Stand alone dvd player. I waited 3 years for a player like this. First thing I look for is built qualty. When I opened the dvd tray i thought it was kinda cheap. I thought it be more heavy and more stable. As for the GUI it is first class and is perfect. The main screen on the player is a little crappy. I thought it be more visual detail. I guess all pioneer products have a orange screen on the them. I have not tested other dvd-audio or SACD players, but Dvd-audio sounds so close to dolby Digital. The SACD part is really good and you can hear the diference in that compare to CD. So far i have not used firewire so i cant say anything about it.
