Pioneer DV 444 DVD Players

Pioneer DV 444 DVD Players

DESCRIPTION

Pioneer combines form with function in its progressive scan DVD player, the DV-444. This full-featured, single-play DVD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/VCD/MP3 player offers quality performance with a slim, stylish, silver exterior.

The DV-444 provides film-like quality images with the integration of digital progressive scan output. To accomplish this, the player processes the signal from the DVD disc purely in the digital domain to minimize signal loss. The DV-444 then outputs a signal with twice as much information as a conventional interlaced DVD player. This faster processing virtually eliminates all jagged edges and creates a very smooth, film-like picture.

The DV-444 has the ability to play multiple music formats including the widely popular MP3 format. The unit takes a technological leap forward with the MP3 format, providing cataloging and on-screen menu features to utilize the storage capacity of CD-R/RW discs. The menu allows for simple navigation and song selection with easy use of the remote. The device also automatically decodes MP3 encoded content.

Providing superior sound as well, the DV-444 offers 192kHz/24-bit Burr Brown audio DAC. It combines a sophisticated noise shaping technology, excellent operating stability, wide dynamic range and an extra high signal-to-noise ratio of 105dB.

Strength:

1. MP3 playback
Wonderful GUI Menu for MP3
Wonderful function for MP3 (random play, program play etc)
2. Video Adjust
Fine Focus, Contrast, Brigtness, Sharpness, Chroma, Hue
3. Robust DVD mechanism
Very fast response & robust reading capability
4. Wonderful outlook design, Very slim.
5. Beautiful VFD display
6. Wonderful Picture & Sound Quality
7. And many many many many. No need to comment...

Weakness:

None. It is true.

I have Pioneer DV-533K, Asian model of DV444. I have used many DVD players, but Pioneer DV-533K is BEST. It is not a lie.

I abandoned multi-channel DTS, Dolby Digital and finalized to 2 channel.

I think Pioneer MP3 function is BEST. It has many unusual functions for MP3 playback. For example, MP3 navigator, random play, folder play, fast search, and etc..

VFD display information is perfect.

Audio & Video quality is excellent for the price. It has also video adjust functions.

Analog Devices ADV7172KST is used for video encoder and
Burr-Brown PCM1742 is used for audio DAC.

And it has many many functions.

I think I will use Pioneer DV-533K for very long time.

It is BEST DVD product for the price.

Strength:

Looks, Options, MP3 playback, ability to read CD-R and CD-RW, Fantastic picture quality, and awesome mp3 playback!

Weakness:

Doesn't sound as good as a dedicated CD player. Need backlit remote! I doubt they could do either for the price they sell them for.

I can't find any stand-out difference in sound quality between this unit and my Onkyo 6 disc changer when playing CD's. The onkyo seems more lively and that's all I can say.

This is a huge improvement over the Sony I had. What I really love is putting 80+ songs on a CDRW in mp3 format, putting in the tray and hitting "random" on the remote. I was quite surprised how well this unit plays mp3's. They sound excellent. I encode all my mp3's off my own CD's at 224kps 44khz which helps sound quality a little bit.

Also, I love the looks of this thing. Silver cosmetics is a welcome option compared to plain black. It matches my old Pioneer SA-9500mkII integrated amp quite nicely :D

I got it from Audio Advisor for $249 w/ free shipping in November of 2001 :D www.audioadvisor.com great service!

Strength:

CD playback sound quality, overall build quality and operation also very high standard

Weakness:

Screen interface and remote could have been better designed

I am only commenting on the CD playback quality, as that's a factor for me as important as picture and other qualities.

After a few days of burning in, it's almost as good as my NAD 502 CD player. The ambience is a little less natural and the bass a little less deep. But it's difficult to tell them apart except in critical A/B listening.

Strength:

price, optical out, prog scan, plays mp3

Weakness:

none when comparing to the below products

My first dvd player but I have watched many a movie on the playstation and borrowed sony. All I can say is sony is crap. It is very tempermental equipment. The playstation sucks for dvds the sony dvd player is ok. The Pioneer was easy to set up and easy to hook up. I ran it through an Elite reciever and I played Goldeneye and Phantom Menace and I could not believe my ears. My rear speakers came to life with Dolby Digital. Great bang for the buck. I just wish Pioneer Elite had a base model in their current lineup.

Strength:

Better than low-end Sony.

Weakness:

Not as good as the Pioneer DV-37.

I have had the Pioneer Elite DV-37 for close to 3 months now. I saw the DV-444 on display at my local store so I bought one to take home for a few days and compair it to the DV-37.

First off the DV-444 is much better than the Sony 700P. I had one for a few weeks and the picture was horriable.
My Panasonic 36HX41 TV did a better job of 3:2 pull-down than the Sony DVD player. The DV-444 picture is not quite as good as the DV-37. In the menu for the DV-37 there are MANY picture adjustments that you can make wich helps. Also the overall quality of the picture is a bit better. I believe the Progressive scan in the DV-37 is better than the DV-444, but both are better than the Sony 700p.

If you are looking for a good player under $400, go with this one. Dont even think about Sony. But if you have a High-End HDTV and want a truely awesome picture, go with the DV-37. I got it for $700.

Strength:

Affordable Progressive Scan, good SVCD playback and RANDOM Mp3 mode! Looks good, too.

Okay, you no longer have a reason/excuse to buy some no-name or cheapo DVD player just because it can handle all the formats.

This is the first QUALITY, name-brand unit I've seen that does it all. CDRs & RW's, supposedly DVDRs & RWs, & random MP3 playback (FINALLY). Haven't thrown everything at it myself, but check out more comments at vcdhelper.com.

I have tested SVCDs made on my Dazzle DVC2 with good results. So far, the 444 seems to max out at about 2600kbps VBR, at which point you'll see the occasional stutter. But overall, the image on a 36" screen is beautiful.
Of course, normal DVD & music playback is great as well.

If you've been waiting for a respectable do-it-all player that won't drag down the quality of your HT setup, this is the one you want.

Strength:

Picture using component video is awesome

Weakness:

None as of this writing

I probably shouldn't write this yet as I haven't used it that long. However I'm very pleased with everything I used it for. I recently backed up some of my Mp3 files on CDR, and put them in and played most of the first disc, it sounded great!! I wanted to buy a new DVD player, as my DVL700 did not have component video, but I didn't want to spend a fortune to upgrade also to progressive scan. I know this player doesn't do 3/2 pulldown, but at least when I do take the plunge to HDTV it will be some improvement.
For the money I paid the picture quality and sound are as good as it can get for me. I have looked around alot at high end "AV PARLORS", read quite abit, and in general done some extensive research. I still believe this stuff is as good as the eye of the beholder, or ear whatever. It is all personal preference, and one man's treasure is another's junk.

Strength:

Excellent sound and picture quality. Has played everything well I have thrown at it.

Weakness:

Lack of backlite remote.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase. I expected excellent video and audio from the DVD player but what I didn't expect was the quality of sound while playing CDs or MP3 files. Exceeded my expectations on those points.

The slim design is very nice. Operation and setup is very understandable. My research pointed to the DV-444 as the best value for a DVD player around $200. My experience of owning the unit has backed up that research.

Strength:

Picture, video sound, style, size (this is Paris, where small = good)

Weakness:

CD sound; no way to stop sound being output via the SCART when playing CDs through a hifi system

First, the good points: video is excellent, as is video sound. If you have a home cinema setup, this is an excellent machine. Colours are full and saturated, sound has the depth you'd expect. In other words, a great DVD player. That said, why the less than 100% rating? Well, I bought this machine to play CDs, too.

Put simply, and I'm not just talking about this otherwise fine machine, if DVD sound had been introduced instead of CDs, we'd still be listening to LPs. I've yet to hear a DVD player that can approximate even a mediocre CD player, and, in all honesty, did not expect much from the Pioneer. I mean, I like to play movies, but the fact is I play at least ten times more CDs than DVDs. I only have the one hi fi, so a machine that could do both would be singularly attractive. And admit, I bought the Pioneer in the full knowledge that its CD replay was inadequate. Let me specific. Along with all the DVD players I've heard, with CD replay this machine is bright, forward, bass light and - which DVD designer has ever heard of detail?

If all that sounds negative, note that I had a plan B, namely I'd bought a Cambridge Audio DAC explicitly to improve the sound of whatever DVD player I ended up with. Hooked up to the Pioneer, I now have the unit I'd sought, a DVD player with great movie sound and great CD sound also. I've reviewed the DAC elsewhere, but suffice it to say the two are a great combination. Note that the CDs are fed through the DAC, but movies go straight to the amp. The only bug is that the Pioneer insists on sending sound through the SCART even if the DAC is selected, which sends my cable receiver into freeze mode.

So, this is a great DVD player but only an adequate CD player, which just about sums up the current state of play with all DVD players.
