Pioneer DV 440 DVD Players

Pioneer DV 440 DVD Players

DESCRIPTION

Virtually any A/V system has room for the versatile DV-440. At just 2-1/4"" tall, it's the slimmest player that you'll ever see! Its Twin-Wave laser pickup reads DVDs, CDs, audio CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs. DVDs also look great and CDs sound great. For maximum hookup compatibility, all three types of video jacks are included: composite, S-video, and component. Optical and coaxial digital outputs provide the Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream for your compatible home theater receiver.

- Plays DVD-Video discs, CDs, audio CD-Rs & CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs.
- 27MHz/10-bit video D/A converter.

Strength:

It does every thing it should extremely well.

Weakness:

It seems to me a back lit remote should be standard for Dvd players. It is a real pain to sit in the dark and search for the pause button.

Well I thought I should give my two-bits on the DV 440 since it has exceeded my expectations so thoroughly. Video playback is outstanding through component video outputs to my 32" JVC (whites are white, blacks are black and the colors are realistic and warm). Audio playback is excellent but tends to be a little bright for my taste. Set up is simple if you follow the manual. The unit is quiet. The thing that kept drawing me back to the DV 440, as I auditioned Dvd players, is that it is an incredibly handsome unit and looks like it should cost much, much more than it does. There is no mistaking this for a cheapo a/v component.

Strength:

MP3 playback size/style price

I bought this DVD player mainly more playing mp3 cd''s. The mp3 playback capabilities of this player are top-notch as of spring 2002. It the only player I know of that actually gives you an on-screen display of the folder tree of the cd. It is also one of the few that offers random mp3 playback, as well as programmable mp3 playback. The on-screen display only shows the first 8 characters of a filename, but there isn''t any other player than can do better. The only thing that I don''t like about this player is that there is a small half-second pause between songs,, which is a little annoying when listening to continous-mix mp3 cds. The DVD playback is also great.

played dvd/vcds fine. no complaints. layer change is slow. not a big deal. played MP3 196 VBR fine. ff works in mp3 as well. very quite during playback a bit noisy when loading disks. disks load fast mp3/dvd/vcd. random function can be more random. the same disk will play the same "random" sequence. can be corrected by pressing random button on the remote several times. some people have reported scan lines. haven''t seen those. i have jvc 27D201. no big complaints. i''m keeping mine.

Cost and versatility. Burr-Brown DAC

Weakness:

Compared to others in this price range, no glaring weaknesses.

First, just a brief note of thanks to those whom have taken the time to write about their experiences with their equipment. Very informative. I have now had this machine for a little over 3 months and am very happy with its performance. Musically, it playes compact discs thus far flawlessly (mechanically and sound-wise). I was not particularly expecting the CD playback to be as good as it is. I have not tried MP3 discs yet. With respect to its video capability, it again has performed better than expected. The video is crisp with no apparent chroma problems or these dark scan lines as noted in earlier reviews. I must admit that after reading thoses reviews, I spent the better part of 2 hours trying different DVDs to see if I could see this problem. The only observation that was made was that my eyes were sore from staring at my TV from 3 inches to 20 feet away while not actually watching the program in an attempt to detect these two problems. I cannot particulary comment on the useability of the remote as I employ a RCA universal remote. For the price, an outstanding addition to my home theatre. Weakness:

Remote. Don''t connect anything else to your tv.

I bought this player in Dec.01 after reading tons of reviews (here and at epinions). My decision to buy this DVD player was based on the following: 1)Several A/V connections (Composite, Component, S-Video, Optical) 2)Codefree: the ability to play region 0-6 DVDs (but you do need a PAL to NTSC converter unless you have a multi-system TV) 3)I was interested in Progressive scan, but it would do nothing with my current tv (32" Philips), and from the reviews I have read about some of the better HDTV''s, progressive scan doesn''t make a huge difference (see Pioneer HD643). 4)The price was great considering all of the features. Believe me, I have read about the Chroma Bug and the horizontal scan lines, but I had to see for myself. Plus, I like the Pioneer name brand and again the price couldn''t be beat. I connected the player to my TV using the S-Video (my tv doesn''t have component video) and the first DVD I played was Goodfellas (a must for any DVD collection). And there it was -- faint but very noticable black lines scrolling up my tv. My wife couldn''t notice it, but I could; it looked like some kind of interference. I checked to see if anything in the house was running (hair dryer, clothes dryer, fan, etc.) - nothing. The last thing I checked was my Playstation connection. I had the Playstation connected to the Composite video input to the tv. So, I disconnected the Playstation, and lo-and-behold -- No More Lines!!! Believe me, I was ready to take this thing back, but now I am more than happy with the picture quality, the audio output, and all of those cool features. Sure, the remote leaves something to be desired (I still have to turn on the light to find the right button), but its not a big deal. For those who are complaining about the horizontal scan lines, do you have anything connected to any other inputs to your tv? I''m wondering if this is the problem that several reviewers are complaining about, or if my 32" tv just doesn''t show the lines like a larger tv might (I''ll know soon as I plan to purchase the Pioneer 64" HDTV soon). In any event, I love this player. And even if the lines are present on larger tvs, maybe that''s because its an under-$200 dvd player. You would think that if you''re going to spend thousands on an HDTV, you might want to upgrade the DVD player as well (which I will do eventually).

Weakness:

Remote is a little old fashioned. Buttons are sort of small

After giving up on the sony I had I picked the pioneer. So far I have enjoyed the unit very much. Video quality was just as good as my old sony. The sony kept getting the infamous C:013 disk error message and that was the last straw. The replacement player has filled the shoes of the previos sony very well. I spent a lot of time reading here. Not to mention the Pioneer was about 250.00 less than the one I had before. The MP3 option was also a benefit. The only complaint I can give for the MP3 playback is the 8 character limit on the file names. If you are thinking of this unit I can recommend it. http://www.dudesworld.com/resnikj/homeaudi.htm

Strength:

Slim design/look Connectivity, Sound

Weakness:

Scan lines, scan lines and more scan lines Dark/black colors poorly reproduced

Buyers beware!! I am very disappointed with this player. As some of the reviewers have said, those annoying horizontal scan lines and other digital artifact during dark scenes are very distracting. And just like the reviewers that experienced this "bug", I have a 32" Panasonic TV. This problem seems evident on televisions 32" and greater. Other than that, the picture was a bit sharper and the colors more vibrant than my old Magnavox player. So if you are considering picking one of these "babies" up, make sure to have the store clerk play "The Matrix", or "The Fifth Element", or any movie that is "dark-scened" in nature and look for the scan lines.

Strength:

Sharp picture

Weakness:

Some scenes in some movies are unwatchably because of scan line problem.

I have the scan line problem other reviewers have mentioned, and I can only advise potential buyers to beware. I don''t have this problem with other dvd players, and it only occurs under certain conditions on certain disks. I got through Ferris Bueller''s Day Off without a hitch (a very bright movie). I almost started crying when I tried to watch The Godfather. Dark scenes with heavy browns dominate the movie and the pioneer produces these appalling horizontal lines in all of them. If anyone knows what to do about this or if I can return the machine as defective or not, please let me know.

Weakness:

none yet....well ok the remote sucks...seriously guys how much does it cost to make a good remote!?

So far...so good... previous to this purchase I was using a Phillips 610 from CC and it was straight garbage. The reviews, @ least the good ones, were spot on. Musically this player is top notch. Have you seen any CD players with a Burr Brown Processor that can be bought for less than $200?...hmmmmmm I don''t have a big screen tv so the chroma issues don''t effect me, but on a 27" its more than adequate. If you are reading reviews on this web site and are considering buying a DVD player with multiple strengths....Buy this one
